Hi! Can you do a video on the difference between audible and visual arms vs visual arms placements? Having a really hard time understanding this topic for my upcoming exam!

Audible alarms emit a sound (usually a pulsing sound) so that blind people can hear them. A visual alarm emits a flashing strobe (similar to a police siren but only white light) so that a deaf person can see it. Most jurisdictions requiere both. If you look up “horn strobes” on the internet you will see that they are usually combined into a single small unit.

At 3:51 you show access to the exit passageways from the tenant suites. If one cannot use an exit passageway for ingress, what is the requirement for locking or for access control from inside the exit passageway at those doors?

There is no special lockset required just because this is an exit passageway. The point is that the main entry to the suite should be elsewhere, not through the exit passageway.

Based on CFC 1024.1 an exit passageway can be used for exiting and also a circulation path

You are correct, an exit passageway can be used for ingress (circulation) as well as egress. IBC 1024.1: “An exit passageway shall not be used for any purpose other than as a means of egress AND a circulation path.”

"Circulation" is not the same as "ingress". "Circulation path" is an exterior or interior way of passage from one place to another for pedestrians" (chapter 2 definition). If a "circulation" path can be used for egress AND ingress; what is the purpose of that note on section 1024.1? Why even have it there if there are no limits to its use? Or if there are limits, what are those limits? In either case, at the end of the day, whoever signs the plans is liable for the life-safety of their design.

​@@archicornerHello Jose, yes I agree that 1024.1 seems unnecessary if it can be used for egress and ingress. My understanding is that the exit passageway cannot be used to access anything other than an exit. Also agree the the AOR for a project is responsible for their life safety. Thank you for your content, I have learned a great deal from you and used your content to pass the AREs and CSE.
