Keep in mind though that most mice you buy at pet stores never get this trusting. Males tend to be much more cuddly and interactive than females, but if you do not neuter them, can smell quite bad. I had Archie neutered by a vet so now his pee smells no more than that of a female. I bred him myself, my line of mice seems to be especially smart and friendly, plus they never had any bad experiences growing up.

,How far can a mouse see? I really don't have any idea.🐁🔍
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
People always say mice have poor vision but in my experience they seem to have vision that is just fine. They notice a lot that is going on around them and always look in the direction of interest. They also have a super sense of smell and hearing, so these may play a role in making it seem like mice have good eyesight. But animals that have large eyes tend to have very good vision, especially night vision, so I am pretty sure mice can see almost as good or as good as you and me.

This might be a strange question, but do you think the mice have any concept of you as a single presence? Or do they just think "this is a hand, this is another hand, this is a warm vertical surface to climb and up here is where the voice comes out and all of these are separate phenomena"? I suppose it's probably hard to tell what they're thinking, I'm just curious whether a smart little mouse like this might really understand he's interacting with a friend rather than a couple of disembodied hands!
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
I think at first, especially if you get them from a pet store, they will not make the connection. But then one day they clue in and you know you have them the first time they make eye contact with you. After that you just become a very large mouse that they can interact with. Mice can tell each other apart, they have to since they are social animals and form hierarchies, have friends and those mice they absolutely hate. So this means they have the social intelligence to tell their human care takers apart too. Whenever someone new comes to my studio, the mice really react to them, they know this is a new human being. In my teaching days, I used to take my mice to schools. My first mouse Jason was hand raised and grew up in a kindergarten class. He was pretty bombproof around kids but when he got older, he became more insecure. The last time I took him to a school and placed him on a group table, he followed me wherever I went, even climbing up onto the kids to get closer to me. So mice are plenty intelligent enough to recognize a human as a fellow being, to recognize individual people and to bond very much to one person. We both have hands after all, ours are just WAY bigger :)
@Bettersucksaul4 жыл бұрын

CVC, how are you doing? I was wondering, do you know of any universal non-prescription antibiotics, that treats a wide range of infections in mice? Just something *safe,* that I could try before going to a veterinarian. I'm not willing to risk their health and will definitely go to the vet if absolutely necessary, I'm just curious to know if there's a safe, cheaper alternative mild cases. Btw, your mice are very beautiful and healthy. I quite enjoy watching them, listening to your methods, and I use all advice you give. You certainly know what you're doing and what's best for them.
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
I don't know since I always use Baytril since it is so effective. It is a wonder drug for infections and respiratory illness. Maxitrol is another wonder drug, it is great for mice who scratch themselves raw. But both need a vet to prescribe. Maybe someone else reading this can help you, otherwise you could try Facebook mouse groups and internet forums.....

Question - it doesn't seem like these mice poop all over the floor, do they only do that in their cages or am I just not noticing it? I'd had several rodents and it was always a pain taking them out of the cage since they'd go all over the floor.
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
Mice do poop a lot but they are so tiny and their poops are so tiny, it is not near as overwhelming as it would be for say a rat or a guinea pig. As to pee, only the un-neutered males are really an issue because they have to mark everything continuously. Most females and neutered males tend to pee in corners and only really pee on you if they are scared. Although some, e.g. Faye and Midas, who love you too much, will mark you occasionally as theirs, but it is only a few drops at a time. They are so cute though, it is manageable :)

@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
If he is very itchy, then treat him for parasites first, a tiny drop of kitten Revolution between the shoulder blades usually does the trick. If this does not help then a vet visit is called for.
