Pat Spaziante is a huge part of how that comic kept going for so long. I don't know how or where Archie discovered him but that man was the single most talented Sonic artist outside of Japan for many years. He absolutely elevated that comic.

Dude. Spaz is the goat. He ha some of the some of the best art I have ever seen and he can also copy the art style of other such as uekawas legendary adventure artwork and recreate it to a tee. I wish he was still working for the sonic franchise

This might be a top contender for one of the best looking sonic comics among all of the various runs from Archie, IDW and Fleeteay. Spaz's art is just a treat to look at and you can simply see the love he puts into his work with this issue. Sad it would be the last time he would do interiors for the book but at least he kept on doing covers up to Archie' final issue

They didn't. At the time they already had a story going but SEGA forced them in incorporate SA2 in to the comic in some way to promote the game.

Most confusing part for readers at the time was that everyone in team heroes couldn't be involved in this, except Sonic. Knuckles was green demigod warping around the world. Tails was switched to fake. Amy was in other country with het cousin. Flynn later elaborated it with flashbacks, but it was years later.

The original "adaptation" was weird for me, since when it comes up, they literally tell you "Play the game to find out what happens" which I don't really think works for Archie due to how different it is. Archie Shadow not losing his memories also makes him being a villain after the fact even weirder. Not to mention the nonsense that was Sonic Adventure 2.5.

Spaziante's art is kind of hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes he can be super off-model, and some characters always seem to be drawn in an uncanny valley for me (Hi Sally). But when it hits, like when he's doing an action pose or setpiece, there's nothing quite like it, in the best way possible.

If my memory serves me correctly there's a future comic that takes place in an alternate timeline of Mobius that features Shadow as the king of mobius unleashing Tikhaos, a fusion of Tikal and Chaos. pretty cool stuff

This also was the introduction of GUN into archie which is part of one of the strangest bits of archie lore that most don't talk about and thats the difference between Humans and Overlanders. Like for example Princess Elise from 06 and the president from SA2 and Shadow 05 are human because they are both part of the united federation in station square but other characters like GUN commander, Gerald Robotnik, Maria Robotnik, and Hope Kintober are not they are overlanders who are basically evolved humans that left earth for space like something outta gundam but decided to return to earth later... also they super racist against mobians unlike humans who are stated to be far less racist against and more accepting of mobians.... and thats just the cliffnotes version but yeah thats right Maria isn't even human in the archie verse lmao

Sadly they couldn't do a full adaption since Ken Penders had taken Knuckles in a direction light-years away from where he was in the game. At the time Knuckles was green because he had become a living Chaos Emerald and was messing with time, trying to set things right on Angel Island. The execs at Archie really should have reigned him in or kept some hired goons around to keep his stories from going so far off the rails they couldn't possibly mesh with SEGA's newer story based Sonic games.
