The Light Pacifics were designed by Oliver Bulleid in the 1940s for the Southern Railway. They were built as a lighter version of the Merchant Navy Class, for mixed traffic use across the south of England. 21C159 'Sir Archibald Sinclair' was built in Brighton in 1947, and named after the Secretary of State for Air in the Second World War. 21C159 was taken over by British Railways in 1947, renumbered 34059 and in 1960 was rebuilt by BR, losing the air smothed casing.
34059's overhaul was completed in late 2023. It initially carried plain green undercoat, as seen in this video, but has now been re-painted into full British Railways lined passenger green.
This video showcases Sir Archibald Sinclair pressed into service in undercoat for the Bluebell Railway's Santa Specials, and making an appearance at the New Year's Day gala ( • New Year's Day Steam 2... ), still un-named.
