We rode part of the kaiser steel railway. or better known as the Eagle Mountain Railroad. Today the tracks are no longer found. They were removed in 2016 and 2017. The railway was built in the year 1947 - 1948 that worked until the year 1986 transporting iron ore from the mine of the same name to the foundry in the city of Fontana CA. in whose mine the town of Eagle Mountain was located. what a completely abandoned finger. There is a lot of information on the Internet about this place. But with my friend and a great adventure partner in the Railcart Little Fox. (the TOTO) and his 4×4 can-am we hit the track bed from Interstate 10 to the ghost town of Eagle Mountain. I hope you enjoy the entire 50 mile or so ride. crossing the southern california desert. Jeez, how sad to see all those houses slowly falling apart. Bridges and several areas of track bed were washed out too, from recent monsoons, and the heavy machines that removed the railroad tracks. The desert landscape changes so quickly, when left to its own devices. Glad you made it there and back safely. Another great video, thank you Archie!

Brought back memories of roaming around SoCa in the late 70's. So many Sunday drives out of San Diego. Later getting a 4x4 and adventuring into the mountains to learn how all those gears worked on mountains. Always good weather and lots of fun outdoor things to do. We would spend hours watching hang gliders and parachuters jumper from planes by the side of a canyon. Accidentally driving into Mexico at Tecate. Freezing our butts off camping up in the mountains. Finding a hide away bar. Just so many things happened in the short 4 years we lived out there. And still I am awed by the mountains of weird large boulders.

This trip led me to read the history of Eagle Pass ghost town, Fontana, Ontario International Airport, California Speedway (formerly), and a wee bit more. It is far too easy to get sidetracked on the Web but, if one is a curious traveler, learning pathways are unlimited. Thus, thank you for this very enjoyable trip to Eagle Pass.

I see they finally scrapped it out. I remember watching the Kaiser U25Cs notching up with a string of ore empties coming back from Fontana after we'd swap loads for them at Ferrum. Pulling loads up to Beaumont was a long, slow slog .

It's a bad time when railway tracks removed from their place. The future conditions show exactly how useful is a railway service (with the necessary management) in addition to cars and traffic road.

Too bad they couldnt have incorporated that town, and left the rails connected to the Union Pacific. They may have been able to build a viable community of affordable housing with transportation out there.

Without a railroad to haul the ore the mine would probably never work again and be able to make a profit. Kind of sad, but that's the way it goes.😑

No. It was a company town (Kaiser steel). The Iron ore mine which the town was built to support shut down gradually in the late 70s (Topped out around 2200 residents) although work to decommission the mine and ship out the stockpiled iron lasted through the mid 80s (last iron ore train from the mine ran in 1986; at the time there were only 750 residents) and all the residents gradually left as their jobs were cut. The High school was converted into a prison after the mine shut down, but the prison itself was shut down after about 20 years (2008-2009 during the great recession). There has been periodic discussion about turning the former mine into a waste disposal site, using the railroad tracks to ship refuse from the LA basin, but after 30 years that doesn’t seem to be happening.
