It was always best to let Don do his schtick and go with the flow. That is why he was so great with Johnny Carson. Never scripted.

@@fonso1030 Oh no. I knew that. Thank you, but I did not know if there was more to that reference if they used to tease ppl back then about going to the wrong side. I saw a Don Rickles Show episode, and this was during Vietnam. Rickles came out with a platoon of ppl on the show, and an Asian guy was there and he said ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE ON THE RIGHT SIDE??

Rickles was indeed a comedic genius. When Jack says he also served in the military during the war, Rickles comes up with the perfect snarky response: “Ours?”

You have to give Jack credit he knew exactly how to let Don shine ✨ and keep the interview going, he is right up there with Carson and letterman when it came to interviewing the master comic

You're right. He truly was a fan of Rickles and understood his cadence. This was a really satisfying interview. It shows you that back in the day there was a lot of talent in these local areas.

The way Don could adjust to each interviewer amazes me. Carson, Letterman, Leno, Ferguson, Conan, even Tom Snyder even though he had no audience in the studio

I've seen so many comedians and I love so many of them. But Don will always be one of the best. Love was the backbone to his comedy and that's why he was so great.

In 1985, when I graduated HS, I would've never thought that there would be a time when it looked like so long ago. Look at the age of everyone and the primitive style of the news. It's crazy how fast time goes. By the way, Don was in good form here. He always makes me crack up. He's sorely missed.

I lived in NY for 15 years and I never saw Jack so undone, everytime Jack tried to be normal or humorous Don hit him with a zinger it was like watching McEnroe against Pee Wee Herman.

I counted 55 jokes from Rickles in 382 seconds, you can cut it down even further regarding Cafferty's introduction. One about every 6.5 seconds, with Don knocking it out of the park over and over. "There's a lot of Jewish people down there, so I just sell bread" a pearl among many there.

There really isn't anybody in showbiz that I miss more than this guy. He truly had a heart of gold, and was funny as hell. This has to be one of his best efforts, he was totally rolling here. RIP to the "poster child for rabies" we miss you.

When he said not Jackson heights, Elmhurst, which is now Colombia, nobody got that. That area use to be heavy Irish and Italian, and starting in the mid 60s alot of Colombians, including my mother moved into the neighborhood as the Irish and Italians were moving out. I grew up there in the 70s. By the mid 80s it was an ALL Colombian neighborhood and that's what Don meant by that line.

Now that's a great interview. He knew he was the straight-man and to keep feeding Don awesome questions. Much better than the late night comedians who want to one up don rickles which on don's worst say would never happen on their best day.

The difference between good comedians and brilliant comedians is that the former work hard to write and prepare their material for their acts. Brilliant comedians (ie, Rickles) dont need to do that, its all spontaneous and comes naturally.

I miss Jack Cafferty and Sue Simmons. This was when news anchors had integrity and goodness in them. That pairing was great and our family watched the news every evening while having dinner and afterwards before Jeopardy came on.

Mr. Warmth was the torro towards you if he spot you out, that's why he chose that theme song! Anyone still watching a 35 year old interview in 2019..? I love him so much, he is so funny, I always always watch all his videos over and over again on KZbin. This is my the most favorite one. I love Jewish comedians, they are the most master of comedy, Jewish people are born with this gift like black people with music, dance, boxing, running and basketball which they do much better than whites
