An 8.9 earthquake in Japan sends waves across the Pacific Rim. The following morning at 8:00 am they arrived in Santa Cruz California. This video was filmed beginning 3 hours after the initial surge at the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor.
Current damage estimates for the harbor are at $22.5 million, but luckily only property damage. 18 boats were sunk or destroyed, up to 50 more damaged, some others are believed to be lost after being drawn out of the harbor into Monterey Bay. The force of the surge concentrating into the harbor destroyed docks and moorings in the normally placid harbor.

The tsunami didn't show on the open California coastline - but it did in narrow or enclosed waterways like this.

The word "tsunami" is literally Japanese for "harbor wave". Hence the way that natural harbors, inlets and other waterways can actually magnify the effects of expended tsunamis striking far from their origin point.

If you had advanced warning, why leave your boat at the dock? Why not motor out of the harbour?? This would have been a manageable wave at sea. Yes?

The water gets very deep in the Monterey Bay, down to 11,800 feet so there may have been an issue with anchoring away from the coast. I think many of the boats belong to people who vacation here so they may not have time to get to them. The waves were noticeable for 3 days and probably measurable even longer, the first day the worst, so staying out at sea that long may not have been an option.

Would have been smarter as they say you're safe in 100 fathoms depth.

Kudos to everyone that helped in every and anyway they could . James Marshall , I see your point but it is the ones that make it harder for people to do there job . With that said , I am not saying don't get involved but the Police do not know who knows what they are doing in this situation .... So , there for that is the reason to call everyone back away . It was a Safety and Judgement call . It was not meant to be brash .

Hello hebneh, perhaps Santa Cruz being on a wide bay caused some noticeable surges on the coastline here. It went from a very low tide with a lot of exposed beach that we normally don't see, then a surge would fill it back quickly and appear to be a much higher than normal tide. You're right about the concentrated spaces like the harbor - that's the place with the most damage. Cheers.
