MAURICE MERLEAU-PONTY
Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) was a highly influential French philosopher who has had a huge impact on architectural theory over the years, and also on subsequent thinkers, such as JJ Gibson and Andy Clark.
Merleau-Ponty belonged broadly to the phenomenological school of philosophy, but, unlikely others in that camp, remained open to the sciences and was highly progressive in his outlook. He was interested in the phenomenology of perception, and believed that the body was the primary site of engaging with the world, in opposition to traditional thinking that had privileged consciousness.
We welcome as our guest, Jonathan Hale (University of Nottingham), author of the book, Merleau-Ponty for Architects (2016).
