Sherrie in the video is Sherrie Swafford, who was Steve's girlfriend at the time. They didn't get married, so she didn't become Sherrie Perry.

The video was mocking the fact that music videos sometimes had nothing to do with the actual song. Steve Perry felt like the music should be interpreted by the person listening to it and not the video. His video for his song Strung Out shows the backstory of this video. If you look into Journey and Steve's other solo songs, there are not many video's that aren't of live concert footage, because the band really was not into doing video's.

I might be overthinking this but i think the video portrays his true feelings about how he viewed his career & his relationship with his real girlfriend -Sherrie. I say this from the perspective of having watched the Journey VH1 documentary like 3 times. I don't get the feeling that Steve was your average 80s rock star like his band mates. I don't think he was really into groupies, drugs, etc. I think this may have even caused friction in the band among other things. This was his solo project that he made after Neal Schonn (guitarist) went out & did his own solo project . Its kind of ironic. Neal never wanted Steve in the band. He had a different image of the style of music for Journey. Most people can't remember the name Neal's solo project whereas "Oh Sherrie" was always playing on the radio & topped charts.

Loved the VH1 Behind the Music on Journey. Yes, Steve was a perfectionist and an introvert. This caused a lot of tension in the band. Steve didn't want all the fame and retreated from it while still loving to write and perform. He even had his own tour bus that travelled with the other one the rest of the band used. A legendary voice not only in Rock but in music.
