From a civil engineering background, I disagree on rock being your biggest hurdle. The biggest pain in any large scale earthworks project is always water. In particular stormwater drainage, though a high water table also presents a challenge usually better left avoided even if you have to go far out of your way to do so.

I would say both depending on the cause. Rock leads to delay, water leads to degradation
@Furzkampfbomber2 жыл бұрын
Good point. Solid rock can be annoying, but you can crush it in the end. Water always comes back, always finds a way and always wins. Also, when I think about it, water has this special ability to change its annoying qualitities due to what you don't expect and what is causing the biggest inconvenience. Summer: It will underwash your constructions, sluice out small gaps until they are massive cavities, cause mould and rot, soaks your wardrobe and gear and create a damp climate perfect for all kinds of annoying and dangerous pests. Winter: All of the above minus the pests. Also, it will now flow into small cracks and then freeze, thus destroying your constructions even more efficiently. In the form of ice, it will jam your weapons and vehicles, makes everything and everyone slip and even occasionally impales people in the form of icicles. Also, it will now soak your uniform and then freeze, making your uniform as hard as a board. Also, it will form little ice balls between your toes. And while the ground is too soaky to properly dig in the summer, it now becomes too hard. Except of course the planet decides to send a couple of days of thaw, then it turns everything into half-frozen mud until it freezes again. Almost sounds like Nurgle's or Tzeentch's invention, if you ask me. Well, maybe minus the killing icicles, I guess those are Khorns doing.

@@Furzkampfbomber your points are not wrong, but those will be problems no matter what you do since rain falls down. Fairly easily managed actually. The big problem is if your idiot commander decides to push some lines into that lovely wide spot over yonder with all those wonderful firing lines, but he's not an engineer, so he doesn't realize that not only is it a nice wide spot but also slightly lower in grade than the surrounding area which means anything remotely resembling rain will drain hundreds of acres of runoff directly into those canal... er, trenches. So not only is the corps digging defensive trenches, but now they have to go out again and dig diversion ditches and detention basins.

Nice video. One thing I never understood about Vraks is how Cardinal Xaphan planned on launching his crusade. I mean sure he had enough equipment and a stable base of operations from controlling Vraks, but how did he think he would be able to beat the imperial navy? After all if you cant control space you cant deploy onto an enemy planet. Did Mamon just tell him that he'd get all the ships he would need from the emperor or something?

The cardinal does not strike me as a good military leader. I doubt he even thought that far
@samdurfee60932 жыл бұрын
Probably. In all honesty it is the weakest part of the story. Xaphan did have at least a few Void Vessels, because he and his Entourage were on a Pilgrimage across the Sub-sector. They ended on Vraks, so they had ships just never used them. It would be neat if Xaphan did start a small military operation on a nearby world, with the aim of acquiring more ships. But say it failed spectacularly, prompting the Assassination. There is also the matter of the assassination it’s self. Xaphan was clearly in violation of the edicts of men at arms and an Eversor Assassin would have been well justified. The Sniper was most likely to fail given the situation. I feel it was too forced. The Eversor could have been sent, killed what he believed was Xaphan. Only to realize that Xaphan had a convincing Double, and the Eversor simply couldn’t find him as by this point the guards have mobilized and killed the assassin and Eversor die in a blaze of glory an explosion like that would more easily justify the Rebellion as portrayed in the story. The people would believe that they are under attack. Just my suggestions.
@ottovonbearsmark88762 жыл бұрын
Xaphan wasn’t expecting to be fighting against the Imperium. Original he was just a zealot, not a heretic. If you play Command&Conquer: Generals: Zero Hour with the mod Rise of the Reds, you can play this way with the ECA (European Continental Army, basically a military version of the EU with a much better logo and flag). Your infantry is mediocre but they fight harder when garrisoned, you can build roadblocks that can be garrisoned bunket-style but provide only some protection from explosions and guns, while being worthless against gas, toxins, radiation or fire. You can build bunkers that are slightly better and can be upgraded with one of four: Reinforced (+Health +Armor +Protection vs Gas/Toxin/Rad/Fire) Medical (Aura of healing) Ammo Depot (Aura of +Damage to nearby infantry) Repair Depot (Aura of healing for vehicles). You can build bunkers for vehicles, which can then be garrisoned by your MBT, Mortar track or AA. You can also operate as a mobile mechanized force with artillery support. You can also build big artilleries that must be manually fired and take ages to reload, but can strike nearly anywhere in the map due to their extreme range and hit very hard. All buildings have a "Danger Close" ability that rains down artillery around them from off-map. And you can invest the points you earn by leveling up your Rank of General into extra goodies, like making all your defenses better and unlocking further upgrades for them, or requesting the deployment of minefields or autonomous turrets.

Your seige of vraks series really brought into light the value of the Korps engineers I remember the skirmishes for the old underground armouries and ammo storage units, such were vital to both sides considering how the traitors had mostly total void supremacy after the dark angels left meaning no resupply from imperial fleets, but those engineers were truly the most prized members of the Korps being a literal multi-tool of espionage and counter mining operations, I respect them because they’re literally one man armies.

Here in Sweden we had this big hill that, well there was a need to tunnel through it to shorten a railway line. The tunneling job was massively over budget and delayed once completed due to bad planning. For starters tunnel drilling machines proved to be useless since the hill was not made of rock or dirt but gravel. The tunnel leaked ground water into it that was patched with ludicrous amounts a chemical compound that poisoned said groundwater, something the local farmers didn't find amusing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallands%C3%A5s_Tunnel?wprov=sfla1

If we ever get a large scale high quality series of 40k, It really should follow the Imperial Guard and not Space Marines.
@yanisbaker8812 жыл бұрын
I do like space marines but sometimes it’s so boring that’s why the guard is so popular due to them being just under equipped dudes and dudets against the forces of literal hell, a galaxy eating hunger, blue communists, bdsm elf’s and happy go lucky green skins

'Hey listen buddy; I'm an Engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like 'What is beauty?', because that would fall into the purview of your conundrums of Heresy. I solve practical problems. Like f'instance-how am I supposed to stop some big Ork Motherhubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer? Use a Shovel. And if that don't work? Use more Shovel.'

"I once set foot on it... Krieg, I mean. It is a landscape so devoured by war that I could not comprehend its scope. The soil..bled, hundreds of years of sacrifice painted my boots with the blood of the fallen.. even after all those years you still see bones. Skulls, bleeched and weatherbeaten come to the surface. I was shocked, something after the Scola Progenium I never thought I'd be again. All the while there rumbled passed me siege guns, mortars, tanks, and men. Men... every single one had the physique of a Tempestus Scion. But behind them came a collection of even bigger, Wider built assortment of troops. They looked at me. Stopped on the spot. Turned to face me and saluted. Their quartermaster handed me his dataslate. They where my company.. of the 392th Krieg Engineers. There were veterans amongst them. Used to stiffen the new guardsmen into shape. These men I looked over. Their clothes were dirty.. a breach of Imperial protocol. But I noted every piece of equipment was regulation stored, and their weapons where in pristine condition. I nodded afterward. "Quartermaster, we have orders to prepare positions for 4 Medusa siege guns. I also want a line of trenches infront. " I looked him in the eye.. he looked right back. The fire in his eyes was incredible. Its zeal could not be doubted. He saluted and the company went to work. Just five hours later they where done. Marvellous efficiency. I also noted a Earthshaker canon being set up in the open, and live rounds being unpacked, I sped towards them to ask what by the Throne they were doing. I found three Krieg officers of the regimental command staff, aswell as the regiments banner bearer present. I also found six skeletons. Their flesh long turned to dust. Six graves were dug, I noticed that their uniforms where near patchwork.. what glinted trough the mud was a set of regiment identification badges of the old 88th, 134th and 45th Krieg. The cannon was loaded and the Colonel present got hix vox operator to bypass all his Vox protocols to transmit on al local and planetwide frequencies, my voxbead to, crackled from a short static to the Colonels voice. " We found the remains of several of Jurtens 88th salute to be given in five minutes, end transmission" Every aircraft in the vicinity that could land landed. Every tank, APC, every guardsmen walking along the road froze. Engines where shut down at once. After four minutes, total. Silence.. then the 5th minute the earthshaker fired. Six times in total. This was not sorrow. The Korps knows none of that. Throne, they know nothing of grief.. this was tribute. I know not what comes after death.. I pray the Emperor may find me worthy. These men however. These.. Kriegers. If the Emperor will not forgive them. Well then my soul be damned that I will make a strong arguement against that error when my time comes. -Personal diary entry- Salave Balsta. Commisar 392th Krieg Engineer company. 3 months before his death.
