One thing that a lot of amateur Sci-Fi struggles with is FTL speeds. Light speed is laughably slow, and completely non-viable for an interstellar civilization. 10 times lightspeed is barely viable for interstellar civilization. You are still taking months to go between close stars at that speed. You are going to need speeds approaching 1000 light years a day to maintain a coherent government and military across any significant chunk of a galaxy.
@sparking023 Жыл бұрын
That's not exclusive of GDubs. As previously mentioned, many works of sci-fi have no idea of what cosmic scale means and how light is actually very slow in that scale. It's not a surprise that all too often you see a variant of Warp Drives or Hyperspace. Star Trek and Star Wars kind of cemented the cheesy way to solve that issue, so if it ain't broken...
@CantusTropus Жыл бұрын
@@MWBalls Even at 100x Lightspeed you are still taking two weeks to reach Alpha Centauri and 3,000 years to reach the other side of the Milky Way. Where they remain the most expensive and individually powerful ships of the line in the game.) Also Necron ships really don't have much verity of weapons at all. I suppose there is another possibility for the ZFR-1 engine: as a replacement for real-space maneuvering, not for FTL jumps. ...Except that raises other problems: that kind of speed in real-space implies the sort of UFO-style maneuverability you'd associate with Eldar or Necron ships, and that isn't what we see.
@njnjco Жыл бұрын
Maybe they skip into the warp and pop on their ZFR-1 engines and fly at near light speed in there. If they used them in real space than they would still be limited by the normal laws of physics, meaning that it wold take near infinite energy to accelerate to near light speed and they could fly into a small rock or space dust at relativistic speeds and tear their ship apart. This is my head cannon to explain it anyway.

33:25 The Manta is actually a pretty useful alternative for Titan-grade war engines due to it's relatively more simple design (an aircraft instead of a mech) and given the way the Tau do things, losing one or two would be far less of a resource and personnel training investment loss than losing something like a Warlord titan. I actually wished that the Tau didn't go the way of progressively bigger robots like the Stormsurge and Ta'unar in what seemed like an attempt to copy the other major powers and instead just focused on what they were already good at, taking down titan-grade engines with coordinated strikes from heavy artillery and ordinance platforms like hovertanks and aerial platforms, each carrying a gun or missile rack as big as the ones on their titan-equivalents. It would've made the Tau more unique and be more consistent with their established history.

I don't see why both the Ether Drive and the ZFR Horizon Accelerator Engine can't both exists. While the Ether Drive allows Tau to skim the warp it might not be an effective engine in real space. They warp doesn't flow equally in all places this indeed would be useful if your Ether Drive was damaged to have as a back up. A good argument for having this as a backup " if we ended up in the void between the stars ... we would all surely die in the fathomless dark, centuries from succour even at the best speed our vessel(battle-barge?) was capable of in the material realm." - Commissar Cain. The ZFR might even allow the Tau to circumvent SOME areas effected warp storms, Giving them a legalistically advantage over the those cases.
@Self-replicating_whatnot Жыл бұрын
When it comes to railgun batteries and any other unguided weapons with finite projectile speed - there will always be the range at which they become completely ineffective so long as opponent can see you fire the guns. This range is established by comparing how long it will take the enemy to leave the target area(accounting for weapon spread) against how long it will take for the shot to get there, provided they can start to maneuver as soon as they see the "muzzle flash" (or EM pulse in railgun's case).
@Echo_Online Жыл бұрын
That only works if your target isn't aware they're in a fight. At all other times the target can just sprinkle in random manoeuvres while they're shooting back/approaching. If someone's pointing a gun at you there's no need to wait until they pull the trigger to duck

@ancientarts6019 Жыл бұрын
I know I'm a little late for this conversation but you're talking about a complete non issue. The speed of the projectile would be such that a vessel attempting to dodge would kill it's crew and tear itself apart by trying to change it's direction to fast due to the G forces involved. There will be ineffective ranges where you're unsure if you can track their positions but, given the ship is moving at a speed that's hard to track with a railgun it would also be impossible for them to change direction fast enough to dodge. Meanwhile going to slow accelerating up to a speed capable of dodging would have the same issue. Essentially the moment you're spotted within effective range with out enough shields or armor you're just straight up canonn fodder. [ Now if we start talking about staying out of the way of the cannons themselves such as abusing their turret rotation speed etc is still a very reasonable tactic but probably only plausible if really close and using a smaller ship.]
@sparking023 Жыл бұрын
This raises the possibility for relativistic weaponry. The Tau are probably the one faction who would greatly benefit from having those around, considering their expansion zone is relatively small and their resources are very limited. You see, lightspeed is awfully slow in the context of galaxies, but within a solar system? Well, how about this? You have a star system under your control and you have to keep that guarded from enemy fleets, fleets whose that will enter the system to attack the worlds. So in preparation, you scatter lots of sensors around that will send a signal if enemy movement is detected. And when that happens, you point at them a large railgun capable of launching projectiles at 90% the speed of light. That weapon is mounted at a space station allowing a complete coverage of the star system. You may not be able to stop them, but you already start the fight vastly outranging the enemy and harassing them, quite possibly forcing them to take another route or scatter to avoid damage. The problem would be if someone decided to warp jump right next to your planet, but at that point the Tau would be boned anyway
@sciarpecyril Жыл бұрын
@@sparking023, even inside solar systems speed of light may not be enough. For example, light from the Sun reaches Neptune only after 252,95 minutes or 4,21 hours - there is plenty of time to evade any shot, disregarding the impossibility of aiming such shot on impermanently moving target at this distance in the first place. This is why in Wh40k the main long range weapons in space are guided torpedoes and small attack spacecraft. And Tau torpedoes (missiles) are pretty good.

I'm feeling like the ZF-R is intended to be the operational engine, not the warp drive. It's probably designed to work best in the frictionless environment, immediately propelling you to near max speed, where in realspace it's a lot more sluggish and performs more like how we see them on the table/lore. Tau warp drive was just built to get you in there and use the shunt speed, with a real engine, you get somewhere near (~50%) imperial speed.

Strange entities and ghosts appearing and the Tau unable to figure out what or why. Unknown to them, the very technology they use for FTL travel and defense allows Chaos to slowly seep into real space. This could be because they don't use or even can't use gellar fields as they're not psychic. The tau space fighter, a proper heavier one, is the Tigershark ax 1-0. Built in response to the tau seeing titans. The Tigershark was not quite armed enough (being originally armed with ion canons and a bunch of drones), so they shoved the manta's heavy railguns into it. It's an homage to the real world a-10 warthog. The heavy railguns are quite effective, once past the shields, against escorts and devastating to smaller crafts (including titans). The Tigershark is much smaller and more maneuverable than the manta (which are actually dropships (basically a leopard class from battletech)).

These are so easily intercepted by starfuries and thunderhawks, the least flyable of all boxes can destroy scores of missiles, this type of weapons would also need ammo, and unlike the imperium the tau don't have both the structure or scale of ship for that when energy weapons that the tau are known for will do just as well.
@holo525 Жыл бұрын
You need missiles per say. A kinetic impact in space is horrifc for ships since they don't lose velocity. A tau ship just using rail guns with uranium or tungsten rods would outright destroy ships without their void shields.

I may be remembering this wrong (need to check the old BFG tau supplement) but didn’t the ether drive used the sublight engines to boost into to warp before getting bounced back out? Perhaps that’s how the horizon drive it better? More boost into the warp for a bigger bounce? I’m guessing as I haven’t seen the text covering the horizon drive.

Does the Tau sleep in some “cryo-pod-thingies” or not eat/drink much at all? I mean, it’s very risky to send a giant fleet to just travel in space towards potentially a world that’s potentially an utter wasteland. Edit: I mean, sure, they send in some drones first or something… but if the travel takes too long so does the communication.
@TheDreamStarGames Жыл бұрын
The tau do not cross interstellar distances by navigating the tides of the warp, for such esoteric matters are beyond them. Instead they use conventional science, exceptional technology and a great deal of patience. The vast majority of those tau that undertake the crossing are frozen in cryostasis, put into cold storage like slabs of meat or livestock cargo to while away the years as their ship seeks new horizons. Should they make it across safely, they are then effectively defrosted on the other side. With a natural lifespan of around four decades, eight or nine at the most, they consider this limbo preferable to a years-long stretch of relative inactivity -- Farsight, Crisis of Faith

An hour long video on the Tau Navy. Not my favorite part of the 40k lore, mostly because Tau think too highly of themselves and fail to comprehend just how massive the galaxy is, how small they will always be, and how much stronger literally every faction is compared to them. They live because everyone else has better things to do. But the Tau experimentation with Warp Travel, only to not understand what a Geller Field is, is absolutely hilarious. The Tau can count themselves lucky that they are not Warp sensitive like the vast majority of species in the galaxy.

As much as the tau are technologically advanced, they aren't anywhere close to even 40k imperium, nevermind the stuff astartes can still use. The thing is, people confuse technological advancement as if the GALAXY crusade never happened.

There is also the very important factor of Tau living far short lives so traveling at such slow speeds affects them far more than a human. For example, a 4 year journey for a Tua is 13% of their 30 year life span. Which results in 11 years worth of aging in human terms who live can live to 85 years without any rejuvenation treatments. So a Tua at the beginning of their prime is more than likely going to be bordering on middle aged by the time they get to the destination, biological speaking. Meaning that they either need to load it up with adolescents and raise them on route or invest heavily into staeus technology which comes with its own problems.

I'm not going to pretend to know very much about 40K I just enjoy listening to the lore videos, so my assumptions might be wildly wrong. However I'd love to know what the Tau ethereal caste would think to learn that the Imperium had lost in the last 10K years more advanced technology than they can even imagine creating, and that they would still utterly dominate them if they happened to view the Tau as a serious threat. Or what they'd think about the Silent King and the Necron reawakening.
@stefanoputignano1555 Жыл бұрын
I am not sure they know about the Silent king. The Necron eeeh…on che the Tau woke up a tomb world by being too loud in battle (against orks I think, or the tyranyds maybe) Necron woke up and slaughtered the Tau’s enemies and when the Tau ethereal went to the Necron saying “thank you noble allies we” the Necron shot at him and any Tau on the planet. Then they went to sleep again.
@malaficus Жыл бұрын
They would double there efforts to advance there technology. Tau know they arent as powerful as they hoped but are ignorant of the nature of the warp. Once they find that out however. I suspect a great deal of effort will be made to reverse engineer necron tech. After all. Tau stick is learning technology really fast.

Knowledgable old ones in the comment section, I beseech thee once more. Roughly a month ago I asked for some book recommendations and thanks to you all I had a bit of good time. I haven't been able to buy/find all the stories you recommended, but especially the first Chiaphas Cane omnibus was fun. I was also recommend to read some of the old codexes of topics I liked. But that is where my question lies, from what I know, I am mostly interested in Death Korps of Krieg, Sisters of Battle, Trayzen, Dark Angels, Custodes, Daemons, Chaos Space Marines (Nurgle and the Death Guard mostly). Are the new codexes okay to buy for any fun stories or lore about these topics? Are they good and worth it? Basically some advice about the latest codexes about these topics would be greatly appriciated.
