Mike Looks At The Map - Episode 23
The Carioca Aqueduct in Rio de Janeiro was a centerpiece of the old city when it was completed in its current form in 1750. But while aqueducts of the ancient world stand as tourist attractions today, this piece of Brasilian history running over the Lapa neighborhood of Rio seems to repel visitors coming from all directions.

Welcome back! I went to the aqueduct last year. It was such a shame to see it in its current state. The area is really sketchy, lots of homeless campers with its associated drink and drugs. In the mornings many casual labourers gather waiting for work. Such a contrast from the skyscrapers a block away. Such potential, thanks for the vid!

I used to live in Lapa and I can confirm that your analysis is spot on. That big square is such as a wasted opportunity, bereft of shade and a prime mugging place. The city government needs to get those buildings on the derelict side restored, and maybe set up some kiosks, staffed public toilets and better landscaping in the plaza.

I am glad that you are back making videos. I do wonder, though, the effects that the idea of "modernity" had on Brasil and its decisions to promote itself as a 20th century modern power in its urban design, particularly in the context of what many other developed countries had done during this same period.

Please do another one on NYC. It's clear you know the city extremely well, and it deserves at least another look. I'm born and raised in Rio, lived there most of my life, and I agree on many levels with your video. Its kinda a recurring Rio theme in general - by far the prittiest city I've been, solely for its natural beauties (and its unique people), but one with so many missed opportunities. And just as a side note: at night, that empty square in front of Arcos da Lapa is usually taken by stalls that sell beer and drinks. But it still should be put to better use. Lapa is also a slightly rough neighbourhood these days. The usual approach to the arches (and the best one streetwise, imo) is through the seaside lanes, but I particularly like climbing down the Selaron stairs, which lands near the arches - one can start in Santa Teresa and reach Lapa through them.

As someone born and raised in Rio, you raise many points that I and a lot of people here made. It never had as much planning as it should (as essentially, Brazil as a whole), but it was essentially completely abandoned after the capital moved to Brasília in 1960, and the killing blow was when the military government merged the city with the state of Rio de Janeiro in 1975, for the sole reason they were tired of losing elections in both states, and now they were just one, with half the senators and less congressmen, meaning the city lost all the revenue from state taxes that were only invested there and now had to be shared with the rest of the state. The city had a lot of investment for the Olympics and the World Cup, but as it's always is with those, most of it was in stadiums and installations for the events, a huge part was wasted, and of course, being Brazil, there was a LOT of corruption. A LOT. And now the city is more decadent than ever. Regarding Lapa specifically, it's a area in which not that many people live, and those that do are not rich, so it's never a priority in the government's eyes.

I have a second home in "Lido di noto" which is a fraction of Noto, a very famous tourist destination in the province of Syrcause (Sicily), Lido di noto is bmbarded with tourists and locals during the summer thanks to it's unarguably beutiful sea, while Noto itself is bombarded with tourists thanks to it's beutiful barowue architecture. Sadly though the whole area around the very center of Noto is neglected. In Lido di Noto there is a nice elevated promenade facing the sea, but it's really hard to walk around there during the day because of it's car-centric design and utterly usless median. The only nice thing that they do is that they close it in the evenings during the summer months. Recently, after a new road was built by the province, the road that takes you there feels like it wants you to just skip ahead and go somewhe that is actually well taken care of. Google maps link: www.google.it/maps/place/96017+Lido+di+Noto I think the place would be a nice area to take a look at in a video if you are intresgted I can hit you up with some more info.
