Put a ring on the drill bit. If you are too high, the ring will migrate toward the wood. If you are too low the ring will migrate towards the drill. Left and right is easier to judge by eye. Also, clear the shavings very frequently. When the flutes pack with shavings that will drive the drill bit off course. When you hear the drill bit squealing it is overloaded with shavings and rubbing.

If you ever find yourself drilling deep holes like that again, here's what I have done in the past. I setup two laser levels, one shooting to the side and the other from the top, both lined up on the hole. When the lines were hitting horizontal along the drill bit I knew I was straight in two directions, up and down, and side to side.

I had the same issues drilling perfectly straight holes through the spar on my wood airplane. My dad taught me a trick. Put a hardwood block on the drill press and drill a hole the size of your smaller, long bit. Then when you put the block on the mast step and drill through the block it will guide it straight. Worked perfect for me.

Hello, Panu! My opinion is to have wide 20 by 30cm stainless steel basement, welded all together to your actual cleats. As wide basement will provide less braking forces to your boat body! Best regards from Russian construction engineer!)))

Panu you can use a CD disc to align the drill bit, fasten it to the metal piece with the hole over the metal hole and as you drill just watch the reflection of the drill. The drill and the reflected image should be perfectly aligned and you can instantly see when they are not.

When fitting those cleats might be an idea to drill through those 10mm timbers first and pump some expanding foam into it. it will stop any water getting into untreated timber if the butyl or what ever you use to bed the cleats fails in the future. If you are going to strengthen that area with thicker wood might be an idea to do it first while you have easy access but obviously treat this timber with epoxy or something else to prevent moisture getting into your hull timbers

Drill a hole in a scrap bit of 4x2 about 3 or 4 inches long with the same drill you will be using making sure its square and true. when you go to drill an actual hole in your boat, slide the scrap bit over you drill bit and once you have the bit on centre of where the hole will start slide the scrap bit forward until it is firm against the plate and drill. You will get prefect holes every time. If you know you will need to use a second longer bit, use a quick clamp to hold the scrap piece in place, then you have a perfect guide for the bit.

The task of creating rigid mountings for the cleats will be repeated for the fastenings for the railings. A universally applicable solution appears to be advantageous.
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 15 күн бұрын
Yes, that's true! Need to think about this a little. Although forces in railings are much smaller and I'm gonna have fixed railings (no wire/line lifelines). Not sure yet of the material. Maybe stainless, maybe composite.

Hi Panu. Is it not more common to put a sleeve through the bulwarks to run the ropes through and fix the cleats to the deck?
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 13 күн бұрын
Not sure if common or not. But I want to have the cleats so that there's not additional chafing point for the ropes. If you think of for example a little flexible mooring line, it chafes around the sleeve. Also I don't want the ropes or cleats on the decks. They're not that wide anyway.
@brianlord2636
@brianlord2636 13 күн бұрын
@ Also I was thinking that your frames extend up to the top of the bulwarks which is not always the case, making them stronger.
@MartinWirth-s8q
@MartinWirth-s8q 11 күн бұрын
Why dont you mount the cleats symmetric over a frame. Then you can have the center bolt as a long wood screw in the frame after drilling a hole with the screws core diameter.
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 11 күн бұрын
The "issue" there is that those bolts are under the cleat pipe. So they cannot be very long (something like 40-50mm max). That's why I need to have proper backing plate/piece with machine threads underneath there. Also I want the "holes" to be 110% watertight. So no wood screws.

Panu, you have plenty of athwartships bulk to those mast steps but what spreads the forces for and aft?
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 14 күн бұрын
Hi! The gaps between those three frames will be filled with wood. So the load will be spreading with them. And then of course the keel timber will connect all of that. And then the whole hull over them all.

Why couldn't you make or purchase angle irons to lay against the bulwark and bolt through one way with the cleats bolting it the other way? Or isn't that boxed in part, (sorry I don't know what it is called), strong enough to handle the sideways strain?
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 15 күн бұрын
Hi! I would like the part where the cleat goes into to be thick enough to have the full thread in it. So that there's no "hole" through that part at all. Minimizing the possibility to have leak. But in general those things should be "some sort of angle iron". I just doubt I can find sturdy enough. And I need to spread the load from the cleats to the frames and to the side beams of the boat. The bulwarks are not strong enough by themselves.

There is a laser that goes on your chuck. If you are drilling square, it will show a complete circle on the surface. If you are not square, it will project an oval. I ordered one from china but it never arrived.
