Just a mile away from the Inchnadamph Lodge sits the iconic ruin of Ardvreck Castle upon Loch Assynt.
The Castle was built in 1597 as the seat of MacLeod of Assynt. In 1650 Neil MacLeod of Assynt captured the Royalist commander, the Marquis of Montrose, and after his defeat at the Battle of Carbisdale, Montrose was imprisoned in Ardvreck Castle, before being taken to Edinburgh for execution. In 1672 the MacKenzies of Assynt besieged the Castle, and the MacLeod’s were forced to surrender. The Castle subsequently fell into disrepair, and was abandoned in the 1700’s.
The castle is said to be haunted by the weeping ghost of one of the daughters of a MacLeod chief, who threw herself out of one of the windows after being promised to the Devil, as well as the ghost of a tall man, clad in grey.
