“Where’s the creativity?!” From a journalist perspective, I can tell you what happened… The creativity has been drowned out. The whole reason why AAA seems to be under AA, is because the way they run their business. They have bloated game development cost because they don’t let their personnel sleep or go home. Crunch is a term for, essentially overtime/very long hours to push a product out. Crunch I can see, in a realistic scenario, max 2 months to make sure the product is smooth and ready to ship. Crunch for the games industry lasts for an average of 9 months, to 2 years. The companies literally have area’s where you can bring your infant son to work, and you can feed them there. The creativity dies with the soul. Unable to leave the work environment turns you into a depressed, uninspired person. All that, and they still don’t get paid well. Now, the easy answer to go to is the overpaid CEO’s and those at the top. Absolutely. Your talking about 50 plus million easy, on top of bonuses, on top of share owning, and if they get fired/retired, they get 50 to 200 million dollar golden parachute, yeah, games are expensive because the game industry work place is abusive and unfair. Then of coarse, you have studios who created excellent games and win rewards, lose their jobs anyway. Who wants to put their heart and soul, into a company/industry, that only sees employee 427, just a number. Now about activision Blizzard specifically. They are the Epstein Island 2.0 (minus the underage, which is a really low bar to pass). 700 sexual assault allegations, literal life threats to employees, the Cosby Suite, wiretapping of employees, the baby milk stealing and drinking, and a numerous other significant accusations that I can’t remember, because it is a lot. I hate that company to the point that, when 900 workers were fired from activision blizzard along with Bobby kotick (who got a 250 million dollar leave bonus), I went back and bought call up duty’s that I missed due to my own personal boycott. I saw this as a good thing, as that company needs to be cleaned house. You don’t get 700 sexual assault allegations without a massive problem with many co-workers being involved, being aware, or ignoring the problem because it didn’t affect you and it’s none of your business. Activision Blizzard deserves to be liquidated and only remembered as the worst company to have existed in the US. And Ubisoft has their own problem, as 5 of their top CEO’s (those at the top as 2 are named, 3 are unknown), got raided and arrested. Anything I’ve said above for Activision (minus the baby stuff) apply to that company in a smaller scale. Think they were released on bail because they got money, but they were handcuffed and booked, so the record is there and no plausible deniability.

The more "A"s it gets past the "AA" mark the more worse it is. Also, blame DEI/ESG/BRIDGE super low interest loans. Edit: I wish-listed Kingmaker and I am waiting for it's release.
@johnj.spurgin70375 ай бұрын
While DEI and such is a how of games getting better and a why, it is not the origin. The fundamental problem is a combination of the delusion of infinite growth and the investor economy. The instant a company goes public, they become servants of the investors and can get sued and fired for not fulfilling their fiduciary duties. Thus the company goes from focusing on products to focusing on monetization. It all spirals out from there.

@@johnj.spurgin7037 All the "current year nonsense" will make more sense if you discard the idea that there is some "illuminati" or "shadow cabal" pulling the strings. I guess you could still roughly sort the people into a pyramid, with Blackrock/Vanguard CEOs at the top, SBI people and the like at the middle, and at bottom useful idiots from Twitter who contribute through outrage mobs. Each of these has their own goal: CEOs want money/power/prestige, and I believe ESG was solely a tool for those goals. They'd have both a carrot (raise ESG rating) and stick (lower ESG rating) over all companies. SBI and "consultants" like them only want a steady paycheck for themselves and their cronies, for minimal work and/or activism. Useful idiots at Twitter (and other places) want to feel important and like they're actually contributing something to the society.

Honestly, when it comes to non-AAA games, with the Christmas modifier the already great Kill it With Fire gets better. Like having a laser sword with similar sound effects to a lightsaber. On the topic of lightsabers, Star Wars has been political since day one. In the original trilogy the Galactic Empire was based off countries like the US and the Rebel Alliance was based off groups like the Vietcong. The thing that breaks my heart the most are stories of big companies using smaller ones to satisfy their greedy ideas. Like the Redfall story: The game is absolute uninspired shit, but the game devs are very talented. Arkane studios made games like the Dishonored series and Prey, which are phenomenal games and still in my favourites. I remember, back in the day, during the production of Mirror's Edge Catalyst (a first person free running game) they used to have dev videos explaining their progress to people that look forward to the game. In one of those video's they explain that their idea almost got cancelled, because somebody in EA asked them how they expect to profit of that game, comparing the situation to FIFA 06 - which gave EA millions of dollars + that game back then was already/or almost a decade old, I don't exactly remember how they got a green flag for their game after that. Then you have Fallout New Vegas: a phenomenal game, but since Bethesda wasn't the creative mind behind it their treatment was just evil towards Obsidian. You have fallout 3 that was 4 years in development and fallout 4 that was for 7. For New Vegas they expected Obsidian to make it in 18 months. They also promised a bonus payment if the game scored an 85 score on meta critic which they sadly didn't (they had 84) - From what I heard Bethesda didn't help Obsidian in any way other than giving them the fallout 3 assets. Even with all that Obsidian managed to make a banger of a game As an Apex legends player, it's pretty saddening to see that game fly in the microtransaction hell direction, but what's more sad is to see people still buying into their scam. I feel that is also the sad reality of this situation, a lot of people see the pricing and realise that they're being scammed, but the system isn't fully flawed meaning the horrible payments - microtransactions do work to a certain extend. Lastly and maybe slightly of topic, there is a game called Disco Elysium which is one of the most impressive narrative based games to this day (according to me). This is technically an indie studio that got taken over by it's investors and forced the devs out of the company. there's a lot of horrible things that happen behind the scenes of game development and I feel that in the end, the people that get hurt the most are the creative people. Ubisoft, EA or Blizzard will continue doing what they're doing, but I can only imagine how demotivating it has to be to work for these companies.

I don' think you have the right meaning for 'suffering from success'. Suffering from success is when you have unexpected popularity and can't keep up. Palworld having server issues shortly after launch, HD2 having server issues? Those were 'suffering from success'. What's going on with the industry is plain out greed. Minimum viable product that they can 'guarantee' will earn a profit via pandering to socio-political investors and 'wide audience design + graphics', instead of putting the time and effort in to do something interesting. They've lost the passion that used to drive video game development. It used to be that devs would crunch because they wanted the project to be good, not because a publsiher cracked the whip behind them. They actually CARED about the quality of the product and were willing to put extra time and effort in to make it the best possible, whereas now they are resource limited and crunching mainly because of unreasonable deadlines, instead of because they dreamed a bit too big and had to hurry to finish it.

Sadly even people I know that have some sense are seeing movies and buying things to 'dunk on X group'. Luckily that isn't everyone but I'm pretty sure you get people that buy and not actually play past tutorial, so they still count as buyers. If we look at completion rates, it tends to point to that in many titles. But companies are banking on the fact they got normies into a niche, when it's possible the normies/mainstream will not continue liking whatever they are putting out. They've been cultivating that audience for at least a couple decades now, like with WoW, D&D and comic companies. I don't know if niche gamers have enough pull anymore now that tourists have taken over. One can only hope.

I mean it depends. Yes in the past few years we managed to get games like overwatch 2, diablo 4, fallout 76, halo infinite and pokemon scarlet amd violet. But you also have to keep in mind that we also got totk, xenoblade 3, god of war ragnarok, pikmin 4, and stellar blade which I hear is doing well. Triple A games are simultaneously the best and worst they've ever been and its because of shareholder/higher up relations most likely more than anything. Bobby Shitdick only wanted money and diablo immortal ruined any chance of diablo 4/overwatch 2 being good, because they had to make money. Pokemon is the biggest thing on the fucking planet, we need yearly releases for mor cards and plushies and toys and merch, otherwise the investors are gonna complain. Pikmin is much smaller and more niche, so it gets an absurdly long dev time (fuck you miyamoto for teasing us for years) and quality attention to detail. Same for xenoblade 3, smaller game so if it takes a bit longer to come out, eh thats fine its less returns anyways so prob not investing as much. Its one of the main reasons Ill love nintendo above the others (disregarding gamefreak which I desparately hope gets bought out or redone one day), if a game needs more time... They give it more time, because it makes more money in the long term with satisfied fans and brand loyalty. Metroid prime 4 was scrapped and we CELEBRATED it, because they didnt wanna half ass it. Pokemon isnt releasing this year and its unironically the best part of their announcement because we just all want them to slow down and make an actually quality title. But none of the other companies are willing to do that, starfield looks mediocre as all hell and needs more time to develop? Nope, we need return on investments now! You wanna make a sequel to a game that sold decently well but was cannabilized because gamespass? How about we shut you down instead cause you didnt make us any money! Theres a lot of factors but the #1 thing that separates indies from triple A is a lack of investors breathing down their neck telling them to alter their vision to make it more like fortnite since that game makes millions, or rush the game out now cause we'll just sell the rest of it as dlc bundles.

with pokemon as i always keep saying is that the biggest reason is not that gamefreak doesn't care it's that they don't have enough time to make these games. these games are getting bigger and bigger every generation but they're only given three years to develop these games. if they were given four years or even five to make these games they would be significantly better with more stuff in it

Happy Belated Memorial Day. Haven't watched the video yet, but obviously AAA games are still for gamers. I do feel companies are playing it safe with remasters or remakes instead of having games be building blocks for what inspires them. I do miss the Keiji Inafune days when pitches became like Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Soul Sacrifice, Onimusha, etc. When games were made on a gamble of success. I believe AAA gaming could bounce back, trim the excess fat, just don't trim it as much as Senua Saga.

@savisenpaii same, I do reminisce about the 360 era. The tools we have now should make it more feasible. It's just a matter of companies willing to make a loss. I remember Miyazaki talking about already knowing Armored Core 6 is not going to make Elden Ring money, he just wants to make what he wants (paraphasing of course).

AAAA is a term made by Ubisoft and as a mainly Ubisoft player I just keep feeling more and more upset that The Division and Watch Dogs was made by them, they really don’t deserve what they have anymore. After Heartland was closed they moved all of The Division 2’s resources from that to different projects and not back to The Division 2 which really needs said resources back due to Project Resolve and the pushing back of the DLC for the game. Not to mention the lack of detail in TD2 too and lack of normal open world clothing items in The Division 2.

I agree with this division and division 2 were my babies and always wished better for them

AAA gaming feels like a more successful younger sibling trying to impress the failed older sibling that is Hollywood. Bloated budgets that can’t be recouped, and out of touch corpos trying to impress a mythical “modern audience” that doesn’t exist.

Having listened to more of it now, the layoffs are not a failure, unfortunately. Modern games studios largely follow a business model after big tech, where hype is built, investment is brought in, the game sells, they go into a bust phase, and they cut costs wherever possible. As an added benefit, it keeps employees unstable and low on options, weakening their negotiating position and thereby less able to demand higher pay and benefits or competing for higher, more stable positions. The business model is, at the industry-wide scale, working quite successfully. The layoffs are not a failure but disposable pawns for their strategy.

I am not creative enough to imagine a superhero game that is original and fun. But I wish the gaming studio that work on Superhero game would take a few page from other game series and not keep redoing the same stuff. Earth Defense Force is great, nonsensical non-stop action game. You go in, you shoot alien, you defend the Earth. The Yakuza series is basically a better superhero game without any superhero in them. The Dynasty Warrior series make great template for an Avenger game.

Final Fantasy XIV hasn't had a bad expansion yet. Yeah, the new player experience isn't the greatest because ARR is sort of a slog but it's doing a lot of the initial worldbuilding. I'm someone who has played RuneScape since 2006, and I'll tell you I have just as much fun (sometimes more, the 24 man alliance raids are really fun) with FFXIV as I have had with RuneScape. The writing in the main scenario questline is some of the best I've seen in a video game. I'd say it even surpasses Fallout: New Vegas. I dunno, maybe I'm biased, but before I got into 14', I had no interest in any Final Fantasy game. Now, I've gone back and played through 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 10, 12, and played through 16 when it came out last year.

To be fair. Mario on the NES was $50 when it came out in 1985. $50 in 1985! That was a lot of money! If fact, adjusted for inflation it's around $150 today. Also, people forget that video games are a LUXURY, which we've been paying real cheap prices for for decades. Keep that in mind. Also microtransations suck. I would rather the price had followed inflation than have this microtransaction live service game BS.
