Life is so much easier for foreigners in Croatia, as they have lots of money and don't have to struggle like locals. Or so the social media comments go when a foreigner posts something positive about Croatia and how it is a great place to live.
Over the years, I have been astounded at the things I learned about myself over the years. Apart from running MI6 in the Balkans, I am also supposedly a multi-millionaire, retired at 30, and running Total Croatia News as a hobby with a fat British pension.
If only...
This perception that all foreigners living in Croatia got me thinking, as the majority I know are working on local salaries. So are all foreigners living in Croatia really rich? Find out more in the video.

This is often a topic among my friends - we all often get frustrated by what's happening and, or even more importantly, what's not happening in Croatia... that we easily lose appreciation for what we have. For some people, especially those that don't travel much, it can be hard to see the bigger picture of the world and understand that we truly live in a beautiful little corner of the world.

I wouldn't say rich per say but well situated, either reiterated or work good paying job that secure them decent standard of living (underline living) ,where you don't actually don't have to think are you going to spend last few euros for coffee or maybe you won't be able to pay bills next month, there's is difference between survival and able to live (I'm not saying everyone in Croatia is on brink of poverty but you have a lot of people that struggle from month to month maintain roof over their head) so it's definitely nice when you don't need to worry about financial troubles, presumptions come from that other countries have better judicial system aka grass being greener elsewhere with more financial opportunity if you are willing to work hard.

Born and raised in Split, but I went to work in Italy, Ireland and the Czech Republic, had a great salary, travelled all the time, came back 2 years ago - and still, to this day, people ask me "Why the F#*k did you come back here?" Unless you try other places, you have absolutely no idea how amazing it is right here...🔝👋

Born and raised in Split, even have nautic bussiness there still, and prefere living in Italy and Spain due to having some sort of meritocracy in my profession, and due to not having mafia state, and betonization, as I call those horrors of houses and buildings in Dalmatia that are not respecting sea, nature, heritage, history. Chakavian exinction was enough. Sad story, what has happend and what is happening to Dalmatia.

Do you really think that Croats that left are comming back, or will come back? Croats are like Jews, and I don't see imigrants and their descedents comming back. And this is due to corruption, nepotism, and non existing meritocracy. And also, due to history revisionism.

Hi Paul, first a big compliment for all your videos you are sharing regularly. I totally feel you. With 36 I moved from Germany to Split. This was 6 years ago. and now I live on Ciovo. I am still confronted with questions why I left good old Germany. I lived in different countries in the world and I have chosen Croatia because I feel peace in my heart. People in Croatia should live abroad for a while maybe then they would appreciate that they actually live in “heaven”.

People of Croatia imigrated and live in Chile, USA, Germany, Australia for centuries as they knew and know what is poverty, corruption, wars, and nepotism. And mayority wanted out, as they are kinda like Jews now, more living out as here and in whole Balkans since forever meritocracy is foreign concept.

Oh, yep. The most reason why everybody leaves Croatia is because of inflation and money. It is hard to scrape by day by day but you get there. I do love beauty of my country but i do feel like, i will leave it in few years. However, many Croatians who do leave, most of them return to live their pension or just go to visit their country or their family. You are connected to the place where you are born, you can't really escape the longing or force yourself to not at very least return to it.

This short video is one of the best ways to explain in just 3 minutes how to be happy, and fulfilled and basically how to live a healthy life. My grandma is from Stari Grad and I spent endless summers there. Heaven on Earth. Pitty that many people who live in Croatia aren't aware of their surroundings and what they have. But heaven (or hell) is also in your mentality, attitude, and mindset. Anyway, happy about your life Paul and I wish everybody your kind of success. 🥇

Great video Paul. People need to determine what the definition of Rich means. It most definitely doesn't equate to how big your bank balance is. It reminds me of the following story. " There was once a businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Croatian village in Hvar. As he sat, he saw a Croatian fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore having caught quite few big fish. The businessman was impressed and asked the fisherman, “How long does it take you to catch so many fish?” The fisherman replied, “Oh, just a short while.” “Then why don’t you stay longer at sea and catch even more?” The businessman was astonished. “This is enough to feed my whole family,” the fisherman said. The businessman then asked, “So, what do you do for the rest of the day?” The fisherman replied, “Well, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fish, then go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I join my buddies in the village for a drink - we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night.” The businessman offered a suggestion to the fisherman. “I have a PhD in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you should spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fish as possible. When you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish. Soon you will be able to afford to buy more boats, set up your own company, your own production plant for canned food and distribution network. By then, you will have moved out of this village and to Zagreb, where you can set up HQ to manage your other branches.” The fisherman continues, “And after that?” The businessman laughs heartily, “After that, you can live like a king in your own house, and when the time is right, you can go public and float your shares in the Stock Exchange, and you will be rich.” The fisherman asks, “And after that?” The businessman says, “After that, you can finally retire, you can move to a house by the fishing village, wake up early in the morning, catch a few fish, then return home to play with kids, have a nice afternoon nap with your wife, and when evening comes, you can join your buddies for a drink, play the guitar, sing and dance throughout the night!” The fisherman was puzzled, “Isn’t that what I am doing now?”

I lived 8 yrs in Zagreb and it was full of Herzegovina culture. I am from Dalmatia but I loved that Austro-Hungarian note that Zagreb used to have. I hated how they never built anything around not even promenade nor use the river they have. Now, parts of Dalmatia are also full of that mentality that keeps building huge concrete buildings. And I can't enjoy as I loved my partia, made of stone. I loved Istria, it is so nice like small Tuskany. They tried to preserve our heritage. Also, people, young people like me, can't stand AP, and his corruption octopuss of HDZ. It is not even about money. It is having stupid, corrupted boss that sit there in that postion not due to meritocracy, but due to corruption and nepotism.

You're 100% right & I suport you. I live in Ireland for really long time and was flabbergasted first year when I started living in Ireland cause people way of thinking is so different. In Ireland most of people are: YES WE CAN. If you have opportunity - go for it. In Croatia is opposite: you newer gonna make it, you're worthless, you're Croatian (a savage from the Balkans), you're stupid, you're the only good enough to stop a bullet - in a case of war, see the rest of the EU: they're rich and real "true gentlemen", you're never gonna make it - cause you're from Balkan.... Etc... List is quite long. Would I ever return in Croatia? Honesty: I hope - never. I'm sick of listening only crying, self-pity - Croatians for real have no true wish for changes. when I suggested that we do something for a better tomorrow(some changes);only got response - what we can do about it? It is - what it is, We are powerless and non important.... I was fed and sick of that. So i left for good. Message for all Croatians start to change your way of thinking and embrace better future.

EXACTLY! Money indeed isn't everything. Like you, as a foreigner living in Croatia it is by choice as the quality of daily life is so much higher. Freedom, safety, food, culture, traditions, history and climate are just some reasons Croatia is my first choice in the world. I'm from Canada but it is unrecognizable these days. Living in Croatia is more challenging...laws, language, etc. but the pros outweigh the cons 100%. Well worth the red tape and expense. Rich? Yes, in mentality, life experiences and quality of life. Each day is an adventure. Not always in a good way but my heart belongs here. I choose to live my dream here. Yet thankfully it is my reality! Thank you for lucidity expressing what I feel, too.

Another great video Paul. Its so true what you described here. Also there is example of lots of croats who go to forin countries (mostly Germany) for “better life” and only get more money, but lots of them after few years dream to come back. We have to change mentality in this country. Probbably its gonna be the hardes task that anybody ever took, but I think thats one of the biggest problem here. Mentality and constant mindset that something is impossible to achive, always blaming somebody or something (goverment, coruption, politics….) Thats why I love your videos, because I can see that you started that “battle” to change our mentality and mindset. I think your videos sir are most refreshing thing that happened on croatian youtube scene. And I really hope your views and subs are gonna go up to the moon 👍💪💪, big ty for your work from Croatian officer ✌️

mentality here is beyond terrible, as someone who lives here now coming from a western nation, i can assure you that we croats have it best here compared to anywhere else. sure money is tough to get, but if you like myself understand and realize money isnt everything, you realize just how much happier you are even if you're that somewhat more poorer. and i say this mind you whilst also being pretty much broke, and yet im still miles happier with the community, people, simple and easy lifestyle etc than i ever was with all my possessions and money in the west. us croats focus too much on trying to westernize everything about us, and then wonder why so many people are depressed and leaving the nation, what we have is unique and beautiful, and ask any of your relatives and family who are currently working in some western nation for money, and most will tell you theyd rather live in the balkans but 'cant' due to financial reasons.

Nice greetings Paul, I didn't want to comment but I have to write a few facts, first of all, it seems that everyone understands how nice it is to live in Croatia except the Croats, can you understand why? also, the very fact that you live on Hvar is science fiction for almost all Croats, only locals who were born there and yes, foreigners who came like you can do that. Today it is difficult for a young family in a city like Split to buy even the smallest space to live in, because people coming from abroad have raised real estate prices with their excessive demand. We simply cannot compete with those who come with more money than us with our income. Now local people are forced to go to the villages next to the cities, which are completely unorganized and rural, because only there they can afford a living space to live, and even if they can afford it, they are happy, of course You are not to blame for this situation, but it is a fact, and it will be even more pronounced in the years to come...

@@PaulBradbury I watched your video earlier, and the above is my commet, you don't understand, unfortunately, you can't see the tree from the forest, we can mess around and fool ourselves with anything and everything, but if you don't have space for yourself and your family, I mean a new young family, then this country will continue to die, and there will be more and more foreigners. who will not understand why these crazy Croats are emigrating. Not everyone is lucky enough to have inherited real estate from their parents, and that way of not following was just a set of circumstances... I can elaborate, but I don't have much desire for it, believe me...

I think, at least in Dalmatia, there are a bit too many of those rich folks, building too many extravagant villas... Now I am also an immigrant, but just a regular one, married into this country, and for example: I get to experience how difficult it is to hire someone to renovate a house, because my rich villa building neighbors from Germany just pay better, so no honest worker will work for me... I can't blame the workers, it is a blessing for them... But I guess I gotta grab a hammer and move some walls by myself... Not sure how and when...

I don't think Croats are living in a low standard or low quality, just look at Zagreb the city is constantly growing with more and more people. Even immigrant workers are starting to work in Croatia. It is much better now than in the pre-EU period. I guess people that couldn't find jobs left and that opened better opportunities to those who stayed. The average Croatian: 'Nothing is good', he says from his Mercedes, which he cannot fill up with fuel for more than 20 euros. Or example 2: 'Nothing is good', he says from his penthouse overlooking the sea, for which he owes electricity and water bills. Yes, that's us, Croats. 😁

I still don't believe that not so well off foreigners come to Croatia to enjoy our "life standards". Apart from the eastern immigrants, I've yet to hear a foreign voice on the 8:30 bus towards Jankomir in Zagreb. To come to Croatia and develop a successful life(business) is one thing, but to come to Croatia and just live the daily life of an average worker is a bad life choice.

There are plenty of Westerners here living on Croatian salaries. Check out the Expats meets Split Facebook page, for example. And also those who think the lifestyle is a good enough reason to start a business here. A few years ago, we did a series on foreign entrepreneurs in Croatia - I was surprised at the depth and variety - www.total-croatia-news.com/tag/croatia-foreign-entrepreneur

@@PaulBradbury Like I've mentioned, I don't deny that creating a career and owning a successful business is very viable. I just find it highly unlikely that someone would come to Croatia and live the life of your average joe, earning 1200€, paying 500€ on rent, 100€ on "režije", 200€ on food and, god forbid, a bank loan. As for the Split bit, I guess life on our coast raises the tolerance to low income just because of the seaside view alone, not mentioning the completely different lifestyle than northern Croatia. However, just like we keep telling our government, Croatia is not just the Adriatic coast.

I moved back to Croatia with my foreign husband, and If I could get a penny for every time someone said 'ah lucky you, you got yourself a Svabo' I would have enough pennies to buy myself three storey house in Dalmatia, turn it into six apartments, work through the summer season and complain for the rest of the year.... Jokes aside, it was rather annoying how every small success was looked through the lense of 'he came from money because he is foreigner' knowing that we both came from nothing and worked hard to get where we are today

Imagine now if you are a returnee from "Amerika", what do you think the locals will think of you? You are loaded with money, so everything you want to buy will be priced 10, 20, 50, 100 times higher than if the locals were buying it. Wife and I encountered that a few years ago.

the real truth is that Croatians have loads of money considering how little they actually work......large portion of this money is spent in coffee shops/bars, 2 week holiday every summer, or skiing holiday every winter.........there are people in the UK who work 12 hr day, 6 days a week for years.....many of them have regular jobs and another job on the side, or Mon to Fri job and then another job on the weekend.....don't even start me on the Japanese who are as active as ants, never stop working and exploring money earning options........striking a perfect balance is what we all should strive for

Yes it always amuses me in Dalmatia when businesses are tired of the season in October and take a few months off to chill, look after their olives etc, while the eg Americans work their asses off for 50 weeks to have 2 weeks off in Dalmatia to fund that Dalmatian lifestyle. Gotta love the Dalmatian way

Speak for yourself. Maybe you are talking about Dalmatians that have apartments for rent close to the sea. I live near Zagreb and I can tell you that most off the people I know work their as* off for what is miserable pay if you compare it to any other EU country. And we should compare it to EU countries because it's where we are and prices of stuff are the same if not more than in those countries.

@@silviah2302 No, I do not. But I did before and that still doesn't prove your point. In many countries in EU people are working 8 hours Monday to Friday and have bigger salaries. Look at pay per hour between countries and compare it with buying power (prices of basic living things like food) and you will understand differences between countries and my point.

Yes of course. Foreigners who come to live permanently in Croatia have a lot of money. There is no foreigner who came to Croatia with empty pockets. I know a friend who went to Ireland with 40 kn in his pocket. So he barely saved up for a plane ticket, he had neither accommodation nor job secured, he had no friends or acquaintances in Dublin, he slept under a bridge for the first few days, he immediately found a job, and accommodation after a week, now he has been there for 4 years . Let a foreigner try to come to Croatia without money, after a few days he will die of hunger.

In my opinion your friend didn't succeed in life. Five days of the week he practically isn't at home, barely sees his children... even worst is that he has his own business, which means he can determine his own working hours, so he decided that. I understand that if he rearranges his working hours he won't make a big profit, but isn't less profit better to have better life?

Paul, money is not everything and no matter who is reach or not, I talk about western, Croatia now is EU western. Problem is after we liberated, we have transition to long what keep minimal wage bad, now is 550 eura, for living we need to catch soon, 1000 to 1500 eura. If gouverment stronger be thinking about that they cant build big biroucracy, they must build good serving administration and kind of manufactury in usufully good procent. In this situation with small minimal wage we have no middle working class for all people that mean people have no rights and must go on west. Good minimal wage like on west states build satisfie working middle class for all and people like warking, couse have hope and future. Expresion is that we have big administration only for controling people not to serve for basic strong working middle class for all. We have social fake politic only for biroucrat grow and hold time, looking in people like slave from fake high position and that is what we call balkanism, way of thinking, way what allways need controling people couse that kind of gouverments fears own free people but want present on west like good.. Truth is that Croats dont want be biroucrat, Croats want warking and produce like in western and be independ with proudly paying bills and building own western way of life. Many Croats is recognised in western like good respectin warker. Minimal wage now is bad produce every kind of frustration to people but good minimal wage on mounth is answer in this moment for all problems with small administration and more manufactury.

Ha ha if Croats dont have that dont want work, just surviving on many other Jesus Lords way and waiting, but not without festa, what you know. little true joke. Mainly reason for festa is that we finished great job of liberation and western integration like part of big free western Familly and having open door between western world for better.
