i know the saddness of losing a bird to a virus you have no control over. i am an avian wildlife carer at a sanctuary from tas, australia. i have seen may birds, mostly cockatoos, with beak and feather disease. Quarantining my work clothes from the rest of the house, may be a pain, bird i have to protect my flock too. seeing diseases like ABV and PBF inspire me to become a better wildlife carer and ornithologist. You are being so brave jessi, it can be so scary, remember we are here from you and we love you and your animals, we support you. Hope to see a videos about of joy and scarlet, as well as the rest of your flock on their journey!

I'm glad the birds are doing ok. It makes me wonder if we should test our rescue parrotlet. If we were to bring in another bird, I definitely would have to get them both cleared. But our girl isn't very friendly to other birds so I'm not worried about a companion at the moment. Things like this come with the territory though. When we rescue, we often just don't know much about their history. Sometimes things can pop up and catch us off guard. But I can safely say that all of the creatures that we've rescued are definitely worth it. Your flock looks so good. I know they appreciate the care you give them. Good luck with the intros! I hope the girls become friends.

I'm glad to hear that all of your birds are still healthy and doing well despite being positive. When I was a kid my mom had a lot of birds. Her pride and joy was a blue front Amazon named Gringo. Psiticosis killed him and his mate. It was introduced to them by a love bird. The love bird was quarantined for 90 days away from the other birds and seemed completely healthy, but it wasn't until after the fact we learned that smaller birds can have a much longer incubation period. It was heartbreaking to lose the Amazons, but thankfully the vet Mom went to was familiar with the disease and the rest of the "flock" was successfully treated. I did end up catching it but because of the vet we were able to recognize what it was and sought medical treatment asap. That was NOT a fun experience.

Oh gosh! I hope this doesn’t severely limit y’all’s ability to rescue other birds! Perhaps another bird room? We have a chowder of cats and, as for years we specialized in medical rescues, we’ve had FIV+ cats (much harder to transmit than this virus) but we never rehomed any FIV cats (they became ours). It sounds as though living with the disease is incredibly possible with the excellent husbandry y’all provide. Fingers crossed and prayers rising that testing for the virus (and thus screening) becomes more affordable. We rescued and rehomed pet birds for years but stopped when we lost our rainbow lorry (about ten years ago). There was a necropsy preformed but I don’t know if this virus was part of the postmortem.... pickles...now I’m wondering. Pardon me, heading on a google deep dive about symptoms and such. Thank you so much for the information.
@ShadeSlayer19116 жыл бұрын
I think it's more of a matter of whether or not the birds react badly to the disease. If they react badly, then there's not much they can do. Otherwise, it's like they're not even sick. Or at least that's the impression I got from the video.

Well, she said that it was just the parrots who lived together and I think at least the chickens are safe (since I don't think those go on presentations or otherwise interact a lot with the parrots).

Maybe in the future, we'll learn that this virus is very common in birds, but that only affect some with weakened immune symptoms or are triggered by something else. There are viruses like that in humans, like the CMV virus.

It's interesting that this is the topic of your videos right now as i'm going through something similar. It started with my one budgies droppings being yellow, from there my other seemingly healthy budgie dropped dead for no reason. The sick one got bloodwork pointing to his liver, he is now off seeds for now being on a pellet diet only. He goes back soon to make sure it's not avian chlamydia, if he has it then there is a chance my conure has it as well as they are housed in the same room.
@sweatpantsprincess32396 жыл бұрын
Today I learned: there's an avian form of chlamydia.
@sarab38886 жыл бұрын
It usually goes for the lungs but sometimes attacks the liver as well. It is contagious to both birds and humans.
@zakarymcleod1850 Жыл бұрын
I just left a comment on your previous video with some updated information and some corrections to statements made in that video. Firstly, avian bornavirus is not very contagious between birds. It is almost exclusively transfered from mother to hen (with possible transmission from regurgitation between mates), but more than half of the birds in the wild and in captivity already carry bornavirus. Your rescues probably already had bornavirus from the high statistical probability, and there's no good reason to worry about adopting new birds or separating and quarantining since it isn't readily spread. Please check out Lafeber's series with Dr. Susan Orosz for more new information about the virus.

Hello and great video and channel! I share my life with a very large Blue & Gold Macaw, who I acquired from a breeder. I selected "Merlin" when he was 3 weeks old and he came home at 4 months old after he was weaned. He has only been around his brother and sister (birth to 6 months) and has had no contact with other birds. He is healthy, vibrant and one great companion. So, is there any chance that he has this disease, or is it a pretty safe assumption that he is disease free? I did have the breeder DNA sex him (male) when he was a chic (May 2004) . Merlin is now 14 years old and the love of my life.. Thanks and please respond if possible. Keep up the great work and again, thanks!

Question, can a bird pick up a more active strain of the virus they already have?
@animalwondersmontana6 жыл бұрын
If the virus is present, it's present. How the bird reacts to the virus is the focus. Some new studies show there might be several strains of the virus, but more research needs to be done to know if this is a factor in progression to PDD.

First of all, there is a treatment and it's very simple! Celebrex ! And it has to be the Real Celebrex or the brand made by GreenStone which is the Generic brand but it is the same exact formula at a major discounted price . All other forms of Celebrex are pure garbage. Celebrex will eventually cause liver damage and ulcers in the digestive tract while treating the inflammation the disease causes. To prevent liver damage you need to detox the liver to combat the damage caused by the Celebrex with "Lily of the Desert" liquid Detox. The ratio of detox mixed with good bottled water is crucial. I use Crystal Geyser. You can use distilled water also. I usually mix 1 full cap of Lily Detox (1 oz) with 16 oz of water. I use this water to mix with Harrisons pellets that i run through a blender to make a powder. I mix the powdered pellets with the water detox formula to feed the birds using a 35cc feeding syringe. I use a big syringe because i'm feeding a large parrot. Smaller cc syringes are available. Next you need to treat the liver with Milk Thistle to repair the liver, which is made by Animal Essestials 150mg capsules. I usually mix 2 capsules with 16 oz of water. You can mix the Detox with the Milk Thistle at first or you can alternate the feedings. One feeding with Detox and one with Milk Thistle. Bothe taste like crap but the bird will learn to like it as he starts to feel better. You need to refrigerate both formulas in the bottle. These mixes will last 1-3 weeks when refrigerated. The amount to administer to your bird depends on his or her weight in grams. The ratio of mixed water water formula to powdered pellet formula is 2 parts water to 1 part powder. So 2 to 1. If i knew what i know now after 4 years of trial and error, my Umbrella Cockatoo wouldn't have cost me 45,000 dollars over the past 3 years in treatment. He is still alive and happy as can be with no obvious symptoms of PDD. I almost lost him to this disease 6 times ! It's been a treacherous en devour but i never gave up on him. My African grey also has PDD. The Umbrella has the Digestive issue and the Grey has the Neurological issue. Both are happy as can be. You would never know either one of them are sick. No feather plucking issues, nothing ! I also give them a home brew of colloidal silver to prevent any bacterial issues. 2 ml twice a day. I also give them 2 ml of Optomega oil once a day for digestion. They both eat banana , grapes, corn, peas, rice chex, pasta, almonds, scrambled eggs everyday. They have to have solid food to maintain their body weight. They can't just live on syringe feedings because they will continue to lose weight and vomit. They can live on syringe feedings at first, but you have to re introduce them to solid food as often as possible. Eventually they will want to eat something solid. Whatever they used to eat, you need to try it. You can also try oatmeal, rice, baby food, chicken noodle soup , whatever.. just don't give them any dairy food like milk and cheese because birds with PDD are prone to getting bacterial infections from dairy products. Birds are not meant to eat dairy food. A little sip of milk and a few bites of cheese wont hurt them but just don't feed them large amounts very often. Avoid sugar products. I could write an entire book on Bird Health when it comes to this disease but i have to end it here for right now. I hope that i provided some useful information and i wish you all the best with your birdy babies. My Cockatoo is my best friend, i hand raised him, he's now 30 years old and i will pursue this fight to find a cure. I have some of the best vets and avian doctors in the world working with me and they have been taking notes and providing information to big researchers like Texas A & M and several others across the world. Just so you know, there is a Anti Virus treatment you can get for your bird right now to prevent this disease. Peace.

If Joy wasn’t in poor health, why did you test her?
@Palitato6 жыл бұрын
She talked about it in the last video. Joy was plucking her feathers a lot more than she had been and they were worried she was coming down with something. When they took her in, you couldn't test for ABV on a live bird (it had to be tested for after they died), so when they found out you could test for it now while getting Joy checked out, they went ahead and had her tested just to be safe- and it turned out she was positive for ABV, but not PDD.
