#IrishMythology "History or Fable" from T.F. O'Rahilly's "Early Irish History and Mythology", DIAS, 2010. This book is concerned mainly with the early history of Ireland. Events and persons of early Christian Ireland are occasionally discussed, but for the most part, it confines itself to the history of Ireland previous to the official introduction of Christianity in A.D. 431. The main source from which this history has been reconstructed is native Irish tradition, which has been supplemented to some extent by the testimony of classical authors and by linguistic evidence.

"And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth."

Whatever, the introduction of TV'S in every pub. The replacement of story telling in public houses or house visits and gatherings now ensures our myths and legends are lost for the last two generations. The introduction of iphone, tik tok etc replacing the spoken joke has also made sure our culture and unique sense of humour. Time to banish the phones from our lives!

Personally, I've always viewed the so-called "mythology" of Ireland as being potentially full of genuinely true information. I have no desire to spit hairs or to apply labels, i e: "this being was a god; this being was a hero" etc. Likewise, I admit that we may never know exactly how far the tales have strayed from the factual truth in the centuries of retelling and interpretation. Doubtlessly much vital information has been lost forever, sad to say. Nonetheless, having paid closer attention to what actually HAPPENS in the world than to what academics and pontificators CLAIM to happen, I find that I live in a world that truly contains ghosts and giants, monsters and mysterious forces, windows to other worlds and people who go missing without a trace. If you ask the Native Americans, (for I find myself living in America at the moment,) they will tell you stories of what happens on the land hereabouts and what happened here long ago, but to the academics, this admirable oral history is merely the stuff of "myth" and "fable". Funnily enough, myth and fable is also what such people call the UFOs flying blithely overhead, and the sasquatches parading through the forest for all to see. Since such creatures as these clearly exist and persist, and since only the native population has any explanation that seriously addresses such matters, I put far more stock in the words of the indigenous people than I do in the stuffed shirts of academic pomposity. Likewise, when I read the fragments of history woven with legend that depict the early times of my own Irish ancestors, I say to myself: Why NOT believe them at face value? Who am I to doubt them? Certainly other worlds exist. Certainly our world has born the footstep of many a giant. Certainly magic is the lifeblood of reality and the greatest of the arts. I believe in the Salmon of Knowledge. I believe in Finn and the Fenians. I believe in Cuchulain and Emer. I believe in Queen Mabh and the Morrigan too. Why not? What thing did the academic ever know that the poet did not which was worth the knowing of at all?

Interesting take! Indigenous stories do bring a unique perspective to the table, questioning what's often dismissed as myth. Your belief in the magic of Irish tales is thankfully shared by many people. I tend to agree with O'Rahilly for the most part.

I might be wrong but I think you might enjoy learning about or reading two books by Professor Diana Walsh Pasulka. (University North Carolina, Wilmington) First being “American Cosmic,” second is “Encounters.” Read in that order. She is totally into the study of phenomena experienced by indigenous, eastern and western religious traditions, the rise of new “religious beliefs” influenced by UAP (UFO) and other anomalous phenomena. Also how beliefs and traditions get “redacted” or altered from their original meanings and experiences… I’m not doing her work justice Here w my description. Look her up. I think you’ll be surprised. She’s frequently a guest on podcasts. Lex Friedman’s for one…

Yes, you are mostly correct. Check my channel for a video on this very topic. The law text was called Cáin Lánámhna (or something similar).

Plato talked of an island in the Atlantic, in the shadow of the white isle, a recking coast on three sides, the country split into four countys , and in the center of the island a tomb to the progenitor of all men. When the Swiss carbon dated newgrange they said it was closer to fourteen thousand years old.
