Are Artists Weird?

Sometimes I think I'm weird as an artist. My painting habits don't seem normal. What do I think is so weird? I have a habit of starting a lot of oil paintings, but it takes forever, it seems, to finish them. Do you have a painting habit that you think is odd? Leave them in the comments.
In the end, it doesn't really matter how we work as artists as long as you're painting. Who's to say what is the normal way to create art.
Thank you for watching the video.

I too have a number of paintings that are wip (work in progress) but it's not a conscious decision that I find this happening. Like you, I have a rush of enthusiasm to capture a play of light, an arrangement of natural shapes/objects, a built environment or an interaction of some or all of these and begin a painting with a plan to focus on and bring to the surface my initial attraction but, as the process continues, paintings tend to take on their own life and direction I wasn't planning on so I need to put them aside and begin a new project. I really need to be more disciplined and see paintings to their conclusion.

Hi. Thanks for checking out the video. Your right about two things: 1.paintings take on their own life 2. needing to be more disciplined. I need some of that advice for sure :)

Hi Bruce, I really enjoyed this video! To each his own when it comes to art and calling oneself an artist. I do not see us as 'wierd' but rather focused individuals with a passion for creativity. With world events and the news these days, I think we are the sane ones! We know how to refocus and turn our creativity on to block out what is making the world depressed and evil. In my opinion, we are not the wierd ones!

Hi Deb - Couldn't agree more with your comments. Artists provide a visual respite from the craziness of the world for sure.

Great talk!...if being weird is how artists are perceived that's ok... it's our unique qualities , individualities and expression that come together to bring on creativity

Great video, and great painting of the kayaker on a lake. But what really blew me away was the painting of the tractor and barns - particularly the masterful control of light and shades in the background trees. Could you please post a link to the tutorial where this was painted? Yes, we’re all weird. But we should own our weirdness and be proud of it. I love Oldtimer cars. Friends of mine can’t believe I get excited about rusty old cars with rounded fenders. I can’t understand their more conventional (or „normal“) obsession with modern sports cars that look like a cross between a fighter jet and a running shoe. We’ve got to own our weird!

Thanks for watching Edward. It's interesting you mention the tractor in the background. I just shot the last clip for a video of me working on it. I'll try to have it on my channel within a couple of weeks. Subscribe if you haven't already :) There will be more sessions on it, but there is some cool patina/rust on it that will be fun to paint. I think there was more style in the older cars as well. Everything looks the same now.

Hey Bruce loved your question are artist weird? I feel comfortable in doing my own thing with my work. I often change pictures to suit an idea. Sometimes it works other times I paint myself into a corner. It's the challenge of it . Thanks for sharing your work you are an inspiration. Sheila Gilbert.
