You asked for it, so here it is, our morning routine video. We had to record it on a Saturday instead of a school day because it was just too hectic. What are the differences with autism mornings vs. typical morning routines? Let us know how your routine goes in the comments! Thanks everyone.

I’m 27 and i struggle so much with hygiene (as in brushing teeth due to sensory issue). I find that your idea for the tooth brush also helps me. I also have to have either my pillow case or a stuffie when I go out of the house, helps with anxiety. Your boys have grown so much. I’ve been watching since Ian was little. You all are an amazing family!❣️

I can’t stand electric toothbrushes, I’m not a morning person because I don’t sleep well and a mass buzzing in my mouth that feels like one of those machines they dig hard surfaces like concrete up with, it feels like that in my head. My feet are stimming thinking about it

Educational & entertaining both at the same time. I love how you said "flannel suitcase" by mistake but still included a visual of a flannel suitcase!! I replayed that part more than a few times 😆

Recalling some of my "School Days" (too long ago), my biggest challenge was remembering to put on clothes. Sometimes I would forget to put on one sock. There was always something. And yes, I even went out the door without my pants one day, but I did not get far before my parents noticed. Clothes and I did not get along. Pretty much any food that is normally eaten for breakfast I do not like. (That continues to this day). Teeth brushing was painful, and I seemed to lack the dexterity to master it.

Of Note: From the time I could walk until about the age of 4, my parents could always find me (indoors or outdoors) by following the trail of clothing I shed until all clothing was off. Apparently, we always had understanding neighbors! The first several years of school it was really hard for me to stay in clothes. By the time I returned home I was wearing only pants, all else was in my arms.

I have a question. How did you get Ian to take his medicine with no problems? My son is 12 and I still have to crush it and put it in his drink. By the way, you guys are very inspirational. I don't feel so alone seeing other parents like yourselves handle the daily grind.

Ian prefers to take his medicine because he hates how he feels off meds. Alistair has a lot of difficulty with pills so we have to mash them and hide them in food (he's not on meds, I'm talking about ibuprofen for when he's sick or in pain).

I’m actually just like Alistair: I wake up happy even if I woke up at 4am and I go to bed happy. Every single day: my twin sister who also has autism is NOT like that: she needs plenty of time in the morning to wake up, mean while I’m jumping up and down on a mattress I’m so excited to start the day

I love how you have a wake routine for your boys, one time I remember my told me that Her son who’s my cousin. He’s the Autistic one didn’t like taking a showers I’m like I wish I could of done something about that, because my cousin would have listen to me if I made him take a shower. You have no problem telling your boys what to do in the morning, they already know what they’re have to do each morning.😊😊😊

I try to limit how much I have to do in the morning because I will forget stuff. Basically eat breakfast and get dressed everything else is done. Shower, lunch. Hair I just keep it short to be able to wake up and go. Ian I am so impressed with him getting himself awake and ready to go to school! I really think he will be independent later in life. His progress and growth is through hard work and I think an employer would be lucky to have someone with his traits. Allister I am impressed you have been able to shower and bathe yourself. He's so goofy. He looks like such a joy to be around.

It’s such a different seeing how independent Ian is compared to the others and also shows how far he’s come from only a few short years it’s actually kind of impressive. However, he still has some things that he forgets his medicine for example, well that’s a whole another story that you don’t want to see.

This is great, we really appreciate what you do here in your channel because we get a lot of ideas here for our son from your family, thank you! We have a PEC routine board for my son and it’s always the same exact routine, we switch what he has for breakfast but he knows it’s only a number of things which he likes. We do assist him with getting ready bc he’s still 5 almost 6, but we give him things to do and are teaching him to do things on his own 1 step at a time. Like now he can put on his own clothes but still sometimes wants our help so I’ll tell him I will put on your socks but you have to put on your shirt and pants (2 for 2) ❤

Are autism morning routines that different? YES! I think it’s very hard for some to understand this. My son, Slade, is 7 and has autism. We definitely have problems when we realize there’s no milk! It’s almost a cringe moment for us as parents because we know how upsetting it will be for Slade. I like your simple trick of hot water for the toothbrush! That part of the morning is always a struggle in our house. Thank you for sharing your family with us.

My Brother with ASD paces in the kitchen every morning after he dose gets dressed hygiene and taking his medication for about 10 minutes then he also listens to his music and rocks while doing it this is something new this school year but we've noticed it has helped him a lot. I don't have Autism but I do have FAS ( Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) and a lot of sensory issues. I always have to remember to bring a fidget to school with me or I really struggle. I take my medications also In the morning I also have to do my stretches every morning before we wait in the driveway for our bus for my back issues touching my toes arm over head on both sides side twists and I stretch my legs if I don't do these every morning my back starts to hurt and sometimes I can become irradiated and anxious in school. I really enjoy your videos!

I also pick clothes day before as I'm not a morning person. Also relate to high water pressure being physically painful on skin. I love Conner's space shirt (as a t-shirt though, I don't wear long sleeve shirts). I also wear sweatpants and t-shirt year round! I love the cold so only wear a light jacket if it's windy as it's the wind chill that gets me.

I've noticed that I have a really bad morning if one of my siblings is in the bathroom when I wake up. My morning routine is usually wake up, use the bathroom, wash my face, take care of my mouth, and then get dressed (including my Studio C bracelets I got while on a tour of BYU Broadcasting. I wear them everyday💖) and put lotion on. I actually have a routine with putting on lotion: I put on one that helps with dry skin, then I rub a tiny bit of a different lotion with a smell I LOVE on my palms so I can smell my hands, then I rub some stress relief aromatherapy inhaler under my nose so that if I need a different smell, I can just press down on my nose and then I can smell. I am pretty much out of my lotion because I use it a LOT and, because my parents don't want to encourage my "obsession", I am scraping the insides to get some out. I don't know why, I just always need to be smelling something.

You seem to have a fairly relaxed school morning, mine is the total opposite with my 13 year old, he never wants to get up, won’t have an alarm to wake him, I get shouted at, he won’t get dressed, he doesn’t want to leave for school, by the time we leave we have both been shouting for quite a while. I really hate school mornings.

I had to go to a hospital foam kind of toothbrush. Toothbrushes really annoy the crap out of me. Ian is so tall. Taller than me now. Btw, I use dental foam sponge things on a stick to clean my teeth. That’s what’s often used in nursing homes, institutions, residential programs etc. They work better for me and they allow the toothpaste to be put all over my mouth without pain or anything. I also get grape toothpaste because I hate mint.

My morning routine for work is It’s not really a routine, I get up. And I get my internship clothes on (I’m in project said like I said before) and then I get ready for transportation and I have some water (yes I do skip breakfast which is a bad habit at times😭) So it’s not really as set but I do sometimes make my bed before I get there, and I do take my medicine, but even with my medicine sometimes I will have bad days with anxiety, but with the internship program my meltdowns and freak outs have decreased but my body language has increased because of it, and plus I’m trying to do more things independently, but I’m also trying to help with my family and staff at p.s. helping me out. Hope you have a great day and you all are amazing!

I dont cope if something in my routine cant happen. So finding there was no milk would have messed up my entire day. I couldnt have had breakfast if i discovered there was no milk. I also struggle with showering and teeth brushing. But i need the shower to be high pressure or i dont do well. I cant handle the soft falling water. I struggle with transitioning from one activity to the next in a routine. So i need minimal things. Put on clothes and eat something might be the most i could manage. I could make myself do teeth brushing if i was going to be near people. But a shower also would be one thing too much. I dont like being damp after a shower so i need a towel that will make completely dry. Im not a big fan of water and being wet. I used to be ok with swimming for part of my childhood. But now i hate being wet unless it cant be avoided like showering.

I have no idea where to begin. Well, the little guy wakes around 4:30-5:30am and immediately goes to the kitchen where he'll pull a kitchen chair to the counter, climb up to the cabinet and get him an apple juice (they're 40% vitamin water). Then he'll ask for whatever he wants to eat and it's always cereal, pancakes, waffles, cream-of-wheat, oatmeal or noodles - oh and sausage. By this time his sister is up and eats pretty much the same except noodles. After they eat, they play a bit because it's still early - then it's bath time (they love baths). Then brushing teeth and doing hair - these processes are like trying to wrestle a rhino. And DON'T touch little man's ears (I have to anyway). Clothes on, shoes on, crying, screaming, things thrown, falling to the floor, coats on out to the car and off to school. EVERY DAY...unless they're sick. I get a few hours off yearly, lol.

My son has issues with hygiene... Hes 28 now... and he lives far away, he lived at home till 19 .. I made the mistake of sending him to Wisconsin to stay with his father cause he wanted to work after highschool and he couldn't find any work... His Dad is a tenured professor at University of Wisconsin.. He thought he was going to transform Daniel into a regular guy, an academic, etc etc... he got a job immediately, started school.. dropped classes, quit his job, wrecked his car... His nuerotypical siblings started having typical lives while he was treated like a science experiment by his dad ( we treated him like any other kid..) His dad even said something Bout schizophrenia. Well... Daniel had different issues , and excelled at many things , but never did he seem weirder than 4 years into living with his dad.. Anyway, it's a lonely horrible existence at school... my son has never had friends, he's unhappy, never kissed a girl, my poor son.. Now he's a grown man...I haven't heard from him in 2 months 😔
