Did I miss something? As far as I remember, Marcus Freeman (who is a remarkable coach) has never coached a team to a National Title. Kelly may have lost his first opportunity but he did make it to the big game. Before you allow your college football bias to control your thought pattern, look at the state of the program each of these two men inherited. Coach Freeman received the 11-1 Fighting Irish while Coach Kelly inherited the 6-7 Tigers. Only time will tell which of these coaches will have been the most successful, but until then just sit back and enjoy

@@JustinCredible2452 I remember hearing the negative comments made by all the college football media when Brian Kelly left South Bend. I had never witnessed the Sports press express so much disappointment in any coach leaving a program. In fact, the same year Lincoln Ryley was praised for leaving Oklahoma to take the USC job. (Look how good that is working out!) As college football fans we sometimes forget that these decisions that coaches make are not always based on loyalty to a particular program but they are business decisions based on the betterment of a person's personal career. Not only did Coach Kelly receive a 500% annual increase in his salary, but he came to a program who's facilities are top in the nation and academic standards are on an even playing field to compete with schools like Alabama and Georgia. I don't think anyone who has never been offered a 500% annual increase and actually turned it down, has the moral authority to pass judgment on Coach Kelly's personal decision.

I think there should be price caps that keep everyone relevant within their respective conferences, but I also like the idea of either improving competiveness or, in some cases, problems having the opportunity to find a new home kind of desirable.

ND is lucky, people forget BK tried to get Freeman as DC. Imagine if Freeman’s wife allowed him to take the LSU DC job. Freeman has done a hell of a job at ND, but he didn’t inherit a mess and no one transferred out when Kelly came to LSU. 7, 10 win seasons, a Natty appearance and 2 playoff berths in 12 years as the Irish HC. Yet their fans claim BK never won a big game. Freeman didn’t exactly go through a murderers row of a schedule, played an overmatched Indiana team, a Georgia team whose receivers are allergic to catching footballs and beat a Penn St. team that didn’t complete a pass to a receiver. The road is easier to travel for ND with NIL, the portal and not playing in a conference. If ND beats Ohio St there ain’t a damn thing anyone can say. If they don’t, it’ll be ND being ND.

Lifelong south bend resident. Since he was hired most fans of Notre Dame and football have always known he was a fraud. If you lived in south bend and didn’t like Kelly right from the start, by year four you absolutely knew he was the problem. I highly doubt he can win anything anywhere. Players at Notre Dame never played for him, they always played for the amazing assistant coaches around him. You can’t win if your players don’t respect you.

Nobody [if they are like me] dislikes BK for being the smartest man in the room [if that were/is true]. I like and admire smarts - however, any smugness appearing to emanate from a sense of superiority or self-perceived higher IQ is a real turn off. That and a perception that he can push his players ‘under the bus’ when the going gets tough may partly explain that seeming lack of popularity. We just want him to be the winningest coach/team in SEC and CFB - regardless of IQ or even affability/personality.

It’s not hate - it’s being objective. Freeman has outperformed his old HC, simple as. The loss rate, comparing the two programs over the past 3 seasons, [aside from any advantage of the reportedly “richer” seam of talent in SEC} favours the ND ex Defensive Coach. ND loss rate over that time is 24% - for LSU under BK it’s 38%. Which is better, winning just under 2/3rds of your matches or winning just over 3/4ths?

Well, ND isn't well liked by many, but it isn't a cardinal sin to leave ND for another team. It seems there's much national complaining when LSU hires a football coach. When Saban arrived, it was; "Saban needs to be in the NFL". Now, people are still complaining about Kelly. If I remember, Marcus Freeman was coming to be the defensive coordinator, until ND got a bit smart. I see Kelly's sideline behavior isn't much different than Saban's was. He called it tough love.
