I made a little tool that holds the ball-end of the string on the post. It would work for guitars like the Fessenden. I have an Emmons P-P, and I'm sure dimensions differ from guitar to guitar, but it simply sits between the changer finger and the "tailgate' and is slotted so that it fits over the string peg. You put the ball-end over the peg and then push the tool behind it. It holds the string on while you size and wind it up! I made mine out of emery board (1/8" thick), cut in half with a piece of styrene sandwiched between (this creates 'the slot'). Works like a charm. P.S., the grit of the emery board does not come in contact with the guitar parts., but you could make it of just about anything that had the proper stiffness.

What is a split tuning?

It allows you to combine pedals to get another note for whatever string the split tuner is on.
