Hey all, sorry about the quality of this video, it was rushed, we've had a flat out week doing bigger and better projects, a catch can isn't really that interesting and I understand that, I tried to make it a little more interesting by adding some info but I got stuff wrong, and I apologize, I'll takle diesel fuel injection properly in another video , but essentially catch cans are super important when you have EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) basically carbon sticks to the oil vapour from blow by thus the intake gets clogged with carbon , hope this clears things up, sorry I didn't explain it correctly in the video. Thanks for understanding and the continued support. Some fun stuff coming this weekend Cheers - Patrick

Good explanation of how a pcv system and direct and port injection works but a wee correction is... on modern diesels the cause of the intake manifold and ports getting gummed up with carbon and shit is due to tge high amounts of exhaust gas recirculation (egr) to meet emissions which old diesels don't have to worry about

Im not a mechanic but its my understanding and mechanics have told me that the problem with oil going through the air intake is when its mixes with exhaust from EGR's in newer cars. That is what causes the crud build up. With the 80 not having an EGR i havn't bothered putting one in mine.
@einfelder8262

The oil mist will still collect on the inlet valve and attach itself as carbon. Nowhere near as bad as when EGR soot is added, but it still happens. Remember that statistically 50% of mechanics are of below average ability..... This means that half of mechanics can be wrong.

@@noodz2777 Clearly you aren't strong on arithmetic. The average of any sample is always 50%, and so half falls between 50 and 100 and the other half between 0 and 50. The half that falls between 0 and 50 is below average. Apply that to, say, 100 mechanics and you get 50 that are below average intelligence/capability/size/age/etc. If your 80 vents blowby to atmosphere then clearly it won't get on the inlet valves, but as soon as you add PCV by definition mist will be routed into the inlet tract and hence onto the inlet valves. Simple fact.

I installed the exact same catch can on my boosted 2h about 6 months ago and found that I was starting to get oil leaking from the front and rear seals. After closer inspection, I realised that in fact the filter in the catch can itself was a massive restriction. After modifying the filter element to remove any possible restriction in the system I now have zero leaks from the front and rear main seals. Have you guys experienced the same issues, I've heard mixed reviews about the Ryco catch can both good and bad. I'm interested to hear your opinion after using the CC for a couple of months now.

2 points to make here, Point 1. A friend asked me why don't vehicle manufacturers supply catch cans if they are so good? The answer simply is look at all the companies that make catch cans, if any car maker supplied a catch can they would be sued by the companies that make catch cans. Also, the filters aren't cheap so filter suppliers also make more money on the filters. Point 2. If you put a catch can on an old vehicle is there really any benefit because heaps of oil is already in the intercooler, turbo front end and intake valves. Is there a way to clean the intake because I've asked lots of mechanics and they all say they can do it but the cost is huge because they have to practically pull half the engine bay apart to get to the intercooler and air intake manifold. Is there a product that can brake down the old gunk so it can safely pass through the engine?

That was a great explanation of blow by and PCV. There are negative effects of catch cans though and I personally want to avoid the things. While you were describing the problem of crud in the intake, I thought why not just inject a small amount of diesel into the intake air to clean the valve stems and intake manifolds while you drive? You only inject a small amount repeatedly - nothing much to upset air-fuel ratios (plus it can be tuned out when you do take it in for the dyno tune). The proposed injector is injecting into low pressure air flow, so it doesn't have to be an expensive DI type and putting a tapped hole in the side of the intake somewhere (in plastic more often than not) and threading in the injector wouldn't be terribly hard. The controller for the injector can probably be an arduino or something like that. Not sure why after-market manufacturers don't supply such a kit.

@@blastfromthepast7119 The only place it can go is in the combustion chamber...so I wouldn't expect build up anywhere from that. The action of cold vapourised fuel would be to bath the inlet bits after the turbo upto and including the inlet valves with a solvent, which I expect will wash some of the crud from the PCV and EGR systems. Some tweaking of the fuel map will be required to compensate so it doesn't burn rich.

Unless something is wrong, blow by should only occur when the engine is cold. Catch cans are pointless as long as you’re driving a diesel for long periods at temperature like they are designed. If the engine is running at temp for good period, oil shouldn’t be stopping in the inlet manifold. How long has that engine been running fine without it? 20 - 30 years?

Diesels aren’t port injected like your diagram showed. The reason they clog up intake valves is the oil hits the EGR valve (which is usually at exhaust temp - hot) and turns to a carbon cake. This works it’s way down to the back of the intake valves but also clogs the whole intake. No EGR - no need. Yes your catch can will collect oil but it’s not needed to put this on.

"Gummed Up" intake explaination is wrong. Oil vapour does no harm to intake valves and actually helps. What gumms up is the EGR system that some toss designed for emissions junk by feeding spent exhaust back into the intake for re-combustion. Worst idea every for a diesel. If your donk is sad and has a lot of blow-by then you get more flow and can lead to buildup in the induction system that can be bad if you get a big pool of it move into the cylinder then you should know what happens next.

All engines have blowby, if they don't they are not running. Exhaust soot sticking to the oil in the intake is the problem on EGR engines. That valve/injector explanation was incorrect for a diesel. Diesel direct injection and common rail inject the fuel directly into the cylinder, directed at the bowel in the pistons. Old and non direct injection, the fuel is injected into a precombustion chamber and ignited. The photos you showed were of a petrol engine. Catch cans can help older engines, I would rather.not have oil in my intake, intercooler and then combustion chamber, I prefer cool charged air that won't pre ignite Slow down, supply the correct information and a quality video, then you will never have to apologize

The oil going into your intake will help cool and lubricant your valves, and diesel is a oil so burning your old oil will use less fuel and make more power. Complete waist of time and money. 🤦‍♂️
