Are coding bootcamps worth the price? Will they help me get a job? Will I become a professional developer after going through one? These are the questions we will answer in today's episode of Dev Questions.

I was a total beginner entering the bootcamp that I went to a 2.5 years ago now. I had an awesome instructor and great classmates. The course focused on getting us job-ready. .NET, APIs and some DB work. I made the sacrifice to do a full-time course and was done after 3 months. I was lucky to be able to get a contract job soon after to help pad my resume to help get a full-time position later. It was a decrease in pay at the start, but now I'm making nearly double of my previous career. I also went at a fortunate time because the CARES Act for COVID allowed my course to be completely free, otherwise it would have been about $12k.

A bootcamp would overwhelm me as a total beginner. I want to enjoy the journey and I think about coding as in building a house. I'll take my time building the foundation so the roof won't fall on my head in the future.

This wasn’t my experience with my course. I was a complete beginner and, while it was a lot of work, I did pretty well! Don’t let that be a deterrent for you.

I went to a bootcamp though I had already quit my job to focus on teaching myself how to program I went to one, specifically because it used what I had left of the GI bill it definitely helped, just having a project portfolio on github when interviewing got my first offer like 2 weeks after graduation that worked out great for me, but I definitely saw people that didn't even know if they liked programming go to the bootcamp who struggled, because they lacked the passion to stay motivated kinda tough to think, they now owe like 15k and still can't find a job almost 4 years later so, personally I would say, if you are already on the journey of self learning it really is a great way to accelerate that, and have projects and help writing a resume but, it is not like the bootcamp is gonna hold your hand a lot and make you learn coding, ideally you already have some passion for programming though, the gi bill ones for veterans is maybe less of a risk PS. be prepared for a good number of people with CS degrees to treat you like you're a joke that happened to me for like the first year on the job until I could prove my skills

Congrats on finding work after coding bootcamp - most graduates are still struggling to find jobs because employers still require a bachelor's degree.

I'm not a huge fan. There are cases where they are done with good intentions, but even then it is just a loan. But often, they are written in a way that heavily favors the organization. For instance, some don't allow you to quit the program without massive repayments. Others end up taking a very large chunk of your salary. If at all possible, pay for the education up front or, if you have to, pay with a loan. I don't like the idea of a "future earnings" loan.

I’ve not done a bootcamp, but do think it is appealing. I got lucky with a job and then ended up doing my degree on the side did this teach me loads of coding definitely not but it did give me a lot of business experience. Graduated last year and managed to get my first software development job in Jan. I think what a bootcamp provides in terms of teaching and also support is more valuable than the route I went down! Keep up the good work Tim!

@stevenanthony9387, that was an incredibly ill-informed comment and definitely not one that is encouraged on this channel. In fact, keep it up and I'll ban you from future comments. I don't tolerate people being rude to other developers. To address your actual point, no, that's not true. Different people learn in different ways. Not everyone is the same. And quite frankly, who cares how someone learned software development. The end result is that they learned it. As for being "founder material", that's an incredibly arrogant statement. I'm not sure what you think a "founder" is or does, but it sounds more like you think they are somehow better developers. I can tell you that this isn't true. Also, a true "founder" wouldn't be focused on being "founder material". They would be actually doing the job. The posers are the ones that talk about "founder material". Don't be a poser.

I've never enrolled in a true bootcamp, but ~10 yrs ago I took several programming courses through NYU's School of Continuing & Professional Studies (twice-a-week evening classes, taught by industry professionals). My advice from that experience: NEVER sign up for a bootcamp without having some knowledge of the subject matter. In particular, go buy a book (yes, those old-fashioned paper thingamajigs) and spend time with it. At the very least, for $40+ you'll know within two weeks whether you have the self-discipline to give a bootcamp the effort it deserves. Second, if you've never written a single line of html mark-up you would have to be Einstein to successfully navigate a bootcamp on web design. You will be overwhelmed if every single word which comes out of an instructor's mouith is new information to you. If you can get yourself to a place where you have a rudimentary, fuzzy understanding of the subject, a bootcamp is much more likely to clarify those topics which you have had trouble wrapping your arms (frontal lobe???) around. Cheers!

Hi, i'm sorry for not commenting about the topic of the video. I have a question about the TRM series, expecifically, about why the TRMDataManager.Library/DataAccess (and similar classes) needs to be instantiated. Doesn't it make more sense making it static? Aren't these classes like doing a "job", why do they need to be instantiated? Being static consumes more resources and using dependecy injection better manages the resources? I'm sorry for the off topic question. Thanks for the content!

In the TimCo Retail Manager, we do need to instantiate them because we end up keeping open transactions over multiple calls. You don't want a separate process to make a call in the middle on the same transaction.

Can you do a “how to solve c# errors” video. I think it would be good to let people know how to solve errors that seem impossible to fix but are actually really simple

Tim, I'm thinking about changing my UI from Angular to Blazor, due to the synergies in terms of C# coding. The question is: can I do, in Blazor, everything I do today in Angular? I have a quite complex UI, that was built by a third part developer, but now I'm looking to do everything myself. I would like to leave this as a suggestion for a video.
@IAmTimCorey

You can leave a suggestion at suggestions.IAmTimCorey.com As for feature parity, I’m not sure what things you are trying to do. However, remember that you can use JavaScript with Blazor in case you wanted a particular plugin or feature.

We recently hired someone at our firm as a C#, Angular, developer, he’s doing well. He did the bootcamp part time which took him 6 months to complete….it cost him £7500, I’m U.K. based. I have to say he’s a very dedicated young man, which counts for a lot.
