I not only have observed crows that have problem solving abilities, but who also have a great sense of humor. One crow I got to know was an attraction at a filling station in Tarzana, California. The crow made many friend with the patrons of the gas station because it was a very social creature. HIs sense of humor was obvious because he'd follow patrons as they filled their tires with air; the bird made a practice of stealing any air caps the patron laid down. He didn't hide the caps, they were always nearby, but he was obviously having a grand time with his little trick. He stayed at the station because he had a broken wing, and sadly, this injury made the bird susceptible to feral cats. When new of the birds death spread in our community, many people came to leave little remembrances. I believe a local newspaper even noted the birds passing, and it was sorely missed. I've never looked at crows in the same way ever since. It was many years ago, but this is a true story to the best of my recollection.

ik its 7 years late, got high, thought about searching for intelligent birds, saw the crow, looked for a video and now im actually mindblowned by what this little bird just did seriously wtf was that, that was better than some humans i swear, and also... that was a really beautiful story :') reminded me of a dog that also lives in the gas station here in my town, he's so loyal and always defends the workers there whenever they encounter bad people, such a good boi.

@@drxzt Yeah, I still remember that crow. His sense of humor was such a joy. I think he knew that the guys at the gas station laughed when he did his trick. But he had a wonderful, friendly disposition. I would love to find a crow living nearby. Maybe try engaging in some kind of communications. You just never know. Glad you discovered this amazing animal.

I don't have time to scroll through all 2768 comments at the moment but I have lived, treeplanting, in the woods with ravens on Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada and this simple test is nothing compared to the ravens stealing my lunch. Pardon me, my third lunch in three days. Opening my click locks, then opening the zipper then pulling out the tupperware and getting the duct tape off of it to open it and then eating my sandwich. THEN flying by me on the side of a mountain to caw at me!!! Did I mention the cedar sticks and large boulders I put on the knapsack within which this prize was hidden? This was the third lunch they stole from me and after that I LEARNED to just leave them a freebie on the ground and they'd leave me my lunch. I still shake my fist every time I see a crow. They are brilliant.

Not many rubber bands in the bush so I used a compression strap from my side bag for my mec backpack. Even tied the end in a knot. This big crazy raven had it unravelled by the time I needed to bag up again, about 90 minutes. Sigh. I think that was day two, sandwich four, and I was still underestimating my avian adversary.

Citriano Torres Shouldn't teachers have some pride in teaching their students? I mean if you consider them stupid than the teacher is at wrong not the students. Sure today age is different then when you went to school maybe you might be a young man who knows it is the internet. Any way have some pride in what you do and relate to them any way you can. you're the one who makes their future. If some don't care it's their issue, not yours. Bringing down the apple tree for a few spoiled ones seems kinda extreme.
@TipoQueTocaelPiano
@TipoQueTocaelPiano 9 жыл бұрын
Nibbles53 That's true, except I didn't say my students are stupid. In fact, they are above average. I just said they are stupid compared to crows. Of course, everything depends on the criteria you use to measure intelligence. If you use an IQ test, most (but not all) humans will be more intelligent than any animal. If you use as a measure the ability to adapt to different environments of escarcity in an environment of isolation, humans would rank really low. Think that I was talking about kids. Human development is very slow compared to animal development. A 3 months pig is more intelligent than a 3 months kid by any standard. I don't despise human intelligence, I just dispise this notion than animals are incredibly stupid and therefore they deserve to be at our mercy.

I’m now greeted by a family of them every morning, sitting on various walls and fences round my parking space. If I don’t hand out their morning ration straight away, they actually follow me round my workplace! (I work on a building site). They are such beautiful, incredibly intelligent creatures. I really wouldn’t be surprised if one day they actually followed my car home! I also wouldn’t mind at all!

I'm not an animal behavior specialist, but I noticed through a little observation that birds are brilliant animals, I often sit in my back yard to study, and I observe birds during breaks, and many times I leave bread pieces and water for them to eat and drink, and the idea of observing birds closer came to me, so I set a trap to catch them, it was a simple trap, made of a stick holding a bucket, under the bucket was some bread, and the stick was attached to a string long of 4 meters which i was holding in my hand at the other end, so needless to say that pulling the string makes the bucket fall. Anyway, none of the birds came under the bucket, as they all carefully tried to peck from a distance the tiny crumbs instead of the big risky pieces, however, one of the birds of the Emberiza striolata species, kept watching the whole thing from a distance, and after about 5 minutes, he flew right on the string, desactivating the trap, he was not trying to stand on the string, as it was too loose to stand on, and each time I tried to set the trap back, he would do the same thing again, as if he was keeping me from catching the other birds !

I posted this at a forum several years ago; about an experience that I had. Crows are amazing creatures. Very family oriented and not at all a rudimentary callous kind of animal. One day in Glendale, Ca on a main city street also known as Route 66, I was waiting for a bus at the stop and there were two crows there, one a very one one and an adult crow. The young one was half the size of the adult, and it was struggling with learning to fly, suspended in the air and gliding about 12 feet above the traffic lanes of oblivious cars and trucks that could have so easily killed it given any false step of flight. The adult crow was flying along with the young one, circling it perpetually and watching every move to protect the young one's safety, and against the partially clouded sky and against the shadows of the buildings, their flight became a ballet of preservation.

It's simply amazing looking and watching them how well they find ways to open well closed bags and packets and their cooperation to achieve the task. Crows and Ravens are indeed fascinating. I once saw a raven getting food from a little bucket that was put inside a narrow vertical tube. The raven was given a piece of wire. After realizing that it could not get the food with the straight wire, it actually bent the wire, creating a hook. And it used that hook to fish the bucket out of the tube by the handle. Using tools is not that uncommon among animals. But adjusting tools to fit their needs, that's rare.

@@ACharmedEarthling I was making the point that we are animals, belonging to the same kingdom as everything else, so something we can do has probably got an equivalent in other creatures, and we shouldn't really be surprised when it shows up. Crows extremely smart. Like ones in Japan, where they would drop the nuts in the street and wait for a car to drive over it, then go down the crosswalk and wait for the walk light to change to cross safely to obtain the nut prize

I feel like how amazing this is really depends on the level of familiarity the crow had with the seperate stages 0:28. If it had spent a long time already dropping rocks to deploy a second stick, then it's still cool, but not mindblowing. And I feel like 'eight stages' is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, when three of the stages are identical, and essentially a 'brute force' approach - keep doing the same thing until you gt the result that you got when you were doing that stage by itself.

If you watch the BBC nature special "The Life Of Birds" you'll see crows in Japan take large nuts and drop them in crosswalks when traffic is moving. They will fly down to the curb and wait patiently with pedestrians for the nut to get run over. They will then walk out along with the pedestrians when the "Walk" sign lights up and eat the reward. Pretty neat.

Why would the crow have any reason to believe that the weight of the three stones would somehow release the stick inside the magic stick box? (I suppose it must have been shown previously.). Still, crows are damn clever and noble creatures.

julittok - I've noticed that crows manners change from region to region. Regional cultural differences, so to speak. Some the most obnoxious and persistent I've encountered are from Seattle. Vancouver BC's are pretty bad too. Victoria's on the other hand are very polite and seldom aggressive. In the northeast US they are hardly noticeable.

this is called learning. They learn they can reach the food with a pebble or or a stick. But they never had it set in such a complicated puzzle order. The crow figured it out tself that it can use a combination of both to reach the food.

The crow must have been familiar with each step of the process to put it all together...I have read about observations of crows putting hard shelled nuts in front of cars tyres to crack it open, then eating the nut...and watching the traffic lights, only stepping onto the road when the light was red.Also pigeons catching trains to another station where the food pickings were better, then catching the opposite train back home again when they were fed.
