I recently stud near a corner waiting for a lift and was surprised by the amount of cars that crossed the centre line while making the corner.

Yes! The younger generation now are so dependent on tech that it took away the proper skills one needs in learning how to drive the basics. What a shame.

Driver aids, touch screens, and any form of 'infotainment' systems simply shouldn't be anywhere near any vehicle. Buttons instead of touch screens.
@dudeonbike800Ай бұрын
I think you're confusing the two. Driver aids are automatic transmissions, ABS, traction/stability control, torque-vectoring, front-impact avoidance and so much else. Touch screens are HORRIBLE! But that's an amenity, not a driving aid.
@stuarthowarth2972Ай бұрын
@dudeonbike800 Everything you listed after ABS and automatic transmissions are vile and unnecessary as well

The babies done a green one, so you open the window to clear the fug. Some idiots telling you for the umpteenth time, that you can save 4 mpg by closing it. What's worse is reliability for 2nd and 3rd owners. too much crap.

All those things are very distracting in my opinion. However, according to the law they are not as distracting as a mobile phone in your hand. Apparently having a mobile phone in a cradle stops it from being distracting.

YES! Without a doubt. But it's a double-edged sword. Driver aids save lives AND dumb down drivers.

Well I'm about to find out, tomorrow I go from my 16 year old car released a new model in 2004 so is late 1990s/early 2000s design which as driver aids has power steering and ABS, the new car has ALL the new safety aids.

Engineering Explained discussed engine shut off. On average, if you're stopped for longer than 7 seconds, you're wasting fuel at stop lights. So this is a good system. Multiply the billion or so cars on the road idling in one day, and you get millions of barrels of oil wasted sitting at stop lights & idling unnecessarily. PS Your shifter linkage will last longer if you don't rest your hand on it all the time.
@motorsforthemassesАй бұрын
I hear what you are saying re: shifter but the light resting when I am looking to change gear won't make any difference. When in 6th and cruising, I don't hold it. I only do it in this car too, because it is so close, the van, the Mini, the Audi I don't as they are further away. I blame Ford lol.

If you REALLY want to make better drivers, then put kids on bicycles. Bicycles teach kids SO MUCH about driving, but in a safe, healthy and sustainable environment. All Kids Should Ride Bikes To School Why? To make them excellent drivers! As I've said here before, another way to learn to drive is by racing bicycles. Or motorcycles. But better to start on two wheels without a motor first. Too easy to kill oneself. Cornering technique is self-selecting. Braking in turns, especially in loose off-road conditions, quickly teaches one about traction and how it quickly disappears braking in a corner. (I encountered two runners on a blind turn mountain biking way back in the day. I was riding a bit too fast for the conditions and I knew it. Unfortunately, I reacted without thinking and hit the brakes, which resulted in the expected outcome: low-side crash. They were concerned about me, but I was practically apologizing to THEM as I went down. "Sorry about that! Totally my fault!") And braking in general. Applying different brake loads to front and rear wheels makes one understand center of gravity/mass, weight shift and changes in tire traction. The average driver has NO CLUE that the front wheels are what stop the car. The harder you brake, the more braking goes to the front until it's 100%. On a bicycle, this is quickly learned. One trip over the handlebars is a harsh school teacher! Even when shifting a rider's weight rearward, off the back of the saddle, you still get ZERO weight and traction from the rear wheel during a "panic stop." All self-evident to the experienced cyclist. Entering, apexing and exiting corners is self-evident on two wheels. Tight peloton riding teaches one about coexisting in a group, not over-reacting (braking) and preventing yo-yo. The accordion/yo-yo slow down and speed up on the freeway is a byproduct of stupid drivers. As is the idiot slamming on the brakes whenever s/he sees brake lights, regardless of closing velocity. Driving "too close" to others is fine if everyone knows what they're doing and can maintain speed and position. The squirrels in the bike races were the shitty drivers, guaranteed. I could go on and on, but if we REALLY wanted to create better drivers in this country, we'd REQUIRE all school children to ride their bikes to school. NO more chauffeuring obese kids to and from school a mile away in the 5,000 lb. "Keep Tahoe Blue" Range Rover. Really folks, this idea is a no-brainer!
@motorsforthemassesАй бұрын
I agree, cyclist proficiency test should be back in schools. I also believe people who ride motorbikes make better, more aware drivers.

I'm an avid driver and I want electric vehicles. I like the idea of having cleaner air. I already enjoy the much, MUCH cleaner air California enjoys today. No more SMOG days like the 70's and THANK GOD we got the lead out of gasoline (except private aviation - boo!). But we can do better and electric cars will really go a long way to achieve that. Cycling and breathing diesel and two-stroke fumes gets old. Europe still has some horrible air quality, thanks to these two polluters. Electric vehicles will eliminate this scourge.
@motorsforthemassesАй бұрын
Do you not think e-fuels have a chance?
@dudeonbike800Ай бұрын
@@motorsforthemasses they still don't resolve the pollution issue, unfortunately. And that assumes they can be synthesized and delivered within a reasonable cost compared to alternatives.
@motorsforthemassesАй бұрын
@dudeonbike800 I see electric as a future alternative but the zero petrol and diesel vehicles I believe is wrong, downscale maybe, but not eliminate completely.
@dudeonbike800Ай бұрын
@@motorsforthemasses oh I agree with you. But to greatly reduce or eliminate the daily driver petroleum use would do wonders for our air, water & environment in general. I like Jay Leno's approach; he supports electric vehicles for daily use, which will free things up for the car enthusiasts out there who want to enjoy their ICE machines. Totally reasonable approach.
@michiel5160Ай бұрын
@@dudeonbike800EVs don't emit fumes when driving. They do emit as much small particle dust as an ICE car due to braking and tyre wear (EVs are heavier). To run EVs you need electricity. Production of electricity isn't always clean. EVs pollute the environment due to mining and recycling. Also, if an EV catches fire it is extremely toxic.
