For those wondering about the prices, in Tanzania just like many countries there is a large diversity of services that hinder the prices of products, what might be $50 in this particular mini market is probably $20 at kariakoo market, or $70 in Masaki or Posta. Its a matter of location and customer choice, stuff like food you could get a barrel of fresh Tomatoes from the local food market what you would pay for a kilogram of Tomatoes in a super market, maybe its muddy at the local food market, maybe its too hot and far for you to go there, its all upto customer preferences and needs.

90% of the products were imported making the cost higher compared to similar products in the US. Africa needs to heavily empower indigenous producers to produce more of what we consume. When that's done, the cost of production will reduce and the prices of goods and services will be relatively and competitively cheaper.
@arlitilhocastilho45538 күн бұрын
I agree with you. This must be the path that Africa of 54 countries must follow. Big hug from the island of Sao Tome and Principe
@Opinlinz6 күн бұрын
@Nana Most of the products in stores like Shoppers are targeted to foreigners who want items that aren't necessarily produced in Africa. Tanzania as a country has a very limited range of products. Also the quality of produce isn't top notch. Hopefully this will improve in the future but as of now its lackluster. Regarding prices, they won't necessarily be cheaper just because they are produced in Africa. There multiple factors that determine price. While yes the price could be lowered if some products are produced on the continent. If the population seeks livable wages that will increase the prices. As the standard rises so will the prices. Unless you have a megastore like HEB that has high quality but is able to sell products at a reasonable price. In comparison Qatar has a higher standard of living and gets many of their products imported. As they have a high expat percentage. Yet their prices are relatively better than what is found in Tanzania. I think the government of Tanzania has to work out better trade rates with importing countries
@BoringDad12726 күн бұрын
@@OpinlinzNot true ! No product is targeted for foreigners because the locals outnumber greatly the foreigners. In Senegal, they have same stores. You barely see foreigners except for African foreigners who are mainly students.

@@Opinlinz why should we always be conforming to what everyone wants?
@Opinlinz4 күн бұрын
@@Wealthy_Iam When you write we, who exactly are you referring to? I don't believe my statement indicated anything about conforming. However a certain standard should be met and currently its not there. I'm a huge proponent for better life expectancy in Africa because as of now its not there. As a matter of fact most African countries are at the bottom of the list. Tanzania itself has a huge diabetic problem. So again it's not about conform. It's about putting ego aside and trying to improve

The environment, safety, electricity bills, taxes etc are the price you pay to go an air conditioned high tech market as opposed to the muddy, rough environment of food markets like mabibo, its a matter òf choice for the consumer, its like you are asking businesses like this to shut down and stop development, to whom should they sell to???

@@HavanansiData yes it was during that very tough time with the economy changes, remember alot of super market customers were earning tenfold what their actual salaries were, then Magufuli era came and people could no longer splender and had to spend cautously, it is only now that people have started to earn more than their salaries and thats why super makerts are popping up left and right, if you do the research you will see, even vehicle show rooms changed during Magufuli era you could only see simple cars with low fuel consumption, now you will see alot of luxury exotics with powerful engines, even rolls royces and bentleys are floaded in Masaki now😁 the tap has a broken seal money is pouring

@@Maee2704 i understood your point, but lets remember the growth of the economy needs these developments, you could simply explain to people the logic of choice, but telling someone oooh the prices are inflated is no different from saying they are stealing from you, people go to samaki samaki knowingly the prices are like 2 to 5 times the local areas but do so by choice and it supports the economy and boosts tourism, it is the same in every country so please lets protect these investments we have no idea how hard it is to run them, give people friendly advise

Almost everything in there is imported, and tax rates are crazy high. Supermarket/Mall grocery shoping is a lifestyle and status symbol overthere given the minimum wage. If you have a family of 3 u can easly spend 1m Tzs (420$) per week on groceries in these supermarkets/mall. Only Tanzanian families in affluent neghbahood like mbweni, mbezi beach, masaki, can afford it sustainably. For foreigners who plan to visit Tz, the same amount said above can last u 2 - 3 months if shoping from local markets, and occusionally can hit malls for nolstagia, unless ofcourse if you affluent yourself and dont mind home price-tags away from home, ukienda kila wiki itapendeza😊

Why buy something at a high price that you can easily get at lower price in local markets? Sticking to brands as a sign of stutus symbol? If shopping in suoermarkets and sticking to brands you are used to, then that's your burden.
