Hashtag United are a one-of-a-kind football and esports club, based in Essex, England. Formed in 2016 by Spencer Owen as a group of mates playing exhibition games, we now play in the 7th tier of English football, the Isthmian League North. We won our league in our first season in non-league football and were looking good for a second promotion when the 2019/20 season was voided, but after the 2020/21 season went the same way with us top of the Essex Senior League, we were eventually awarded promotion based on PPG over the two part seasons. In 2023 we won the Isthmian League North and will now play in the Isthmian Premier!
We merged with AFC Basildon Women in summer 2020 and formed our women's team, Hashtag United FC Women, who play in the 3rd tier of women's football, the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division, after they also won their league in 2023. We also now have 40+ youth teams, reserve and development teams, an inclusive team and a walking football team...plus our esports team who play FIFA at the world's highest level. Sounds like what happened in CSGO. The top teams (at the time) signed a contract that essentially guaranteed them their cut, regardless of how well they performed, and a portion of those just stopped giving a shit. If EA made the deal with the prem that it sounds like, theyve basically guaranteed that itll be a shit league with minimal investment and a lack of competition. Plus FIFA is absolutely crap for competitive play. Too many RNG factors compared to most other top esports.

This could be a blessing in disguise in a way. Looking at the larger esports market you're seeing huge organisations taking steps back financially. VC money coming into the scene has slowed down because the pipe dream these people were sold has yet to come to fruition. As it stands at least the Fifa/EA FC scene hasn't imploded like the Overwatch league but at some point these game publishers are going to have to realise that following the traditional sports model isn't what esports needs or wants. Best of luck with whatever direction you decide to take it in the long term, you guys have been able to remain successful for a long time so I'm confident you'll recognise what works for you and what doesn't. I always appreciate the candour in these updates!

E-Sports has always been a joke IMO. It’s cool, but no matter the game it’s always been about exploiting mechanics. At the end of the day it’s a computer program with defined boundaries. 100 tanks are going to beat 100 planes which are going to beat 100 ships. Even something like rocket league, with all the freedom it’s game physics allows is still exploitable.

Hardly surprises me fifa Esports are declining and I’d expect it to be near enough dead in 3-5 years. How long are kids gonna be interested in watching other people play games? Everyone grows out of that phase. It’s the reason why basically every Minecraft KZbinr from the 2010s is gone.
