Did my first head gasket earlier this year. Also did the valves and timing chain while I was in there. One of biggest moments of accomplishments was firing it up after the job, then driving it to work the next day. The smile on my face never went away. There’s something about working on your own machine that does something to you. My advice: sort literally every nut and bolt into ziplock bags. Made the job 1000x easier.

If you have the floor space putting the integral bolts/studs/nuts through a marked piece of cardboard, is another great way to prevent mixing them up. I had a near impossible to diagnose problem in a newer Tacoma throwing a super odd set of codes. Ones that Toyota said were impossible unless we really, really, screwed something up. That was until the customer came clean, in admitting he tried fixing it with a buddy, and they just put all the engine & trans bolts/studs&nuts in a single large pile.

Got a 2004 Mercedes C230K with a blown headgasket for $1,500. I'm 5 months in, 80hrs work time, and I've still got a little bit to go. What caused to to blow was a faulty headbolt which snapped, thankfully above the block line. In a Miata, this is a simple job. On a supercharged german engineered engine, not so much

I remember my first replacement of the head gasket. I was most worried about the timing. I was afraid that if I did something wrong, it would end up with the renovation of the entire head. That car was a Volvo s70 2.4 turbo. The entire repair cost me almost $ 2,000, but it was worth it. I paid 250 $ for a car, so for $ 2250 I have a 200 horsepower car worth $ 3000-5000 and I love this car.

Subies aren't thaaaat bad. It comes down to the driver mostly, make sure it's got oil and if it's boosted just don't floor it at 2k rpm cause it'll destroy the engine. I had to trade in my sti to go back to school and the sales dude who test drove it did exactly that. I tried to explain to him how bad that is and to simply down shift when going uphill. He kept doing it. Any doubts I had about trading it in went out the window, I knew the car was fucked just by that short drive. Sure enough, I heard the guy who bought had the engine die on him literally 2 weeks later. I bought it new and drove it for 120k mostly on stage 2, had no issues. It is mostly the driver. Now I have a brz and love it.

@@Syzygizing I saw your comment/question and now I am curious as well..🤔 Assuming you just parked the car and turned it off, and now you are about to disassemble the motor: what does it takes to ensure the piston is at TDC at this point??? Is it enough to just look at the position of the cam gear(s) and if they are at 12 o'clock (like shown in the video) then you are good to assume the piston is at TDC?? And what if they aren't in this position.. --like, how would you then move them into the correct position (with everything still attached obviously)??? Would it be cool to just manually turn the crankshaft somehow to get them there? My understanding is that you would need a special crankshaft socket tool or something to rotate it I guess?? and you also might need to remove all of the spark plugs too apparently??....as you can see my research on the topic has left me very, very, confused😩 Can someone please elaborate on this process/recommend a video, I'd really appreciate it yo! *(Please & Thank You!!!)* 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 ~knowledge is horsepower~

Easiest way to set TDC is to pull the cylinder number 1 spark plug, stick a long extension or screwdriver (extension is preferred, since it doesn't have as sharp of a surface against the piston face) into the spark plug hole. Use a ratchet and socket on the crankshaft bolt to turn the engine in the correct rotation until you feel air pushing itself out of the spark plug hole (this indicates a compression stroke). Once you're at this point, just continue to turn until the extension or screwdriver comes up to the highest point in the cycle and starts to fall back down. After that, just back the crank up until the extension or screwdriver reaches the top again, (it will sit still without moving up or down for a slight bit of rotation on the crank), and you will be at TDC on cylinder number one on a compression stroke. You can double check the markings on your crank pulley and cam pulley(s), and that will tell you if the timing belt/chain is installed correctly. Hope this helps.

0:33 seconds into the video. On Sunday of this very week. I just replaced a Valve cover gasket on my 4.2l inline6 GMC Envoy. I had to take the intake, air filter box, air intake "4200 Vortec" plenum, and intake manifold off. As well as the alternator, to have room for the intake forward upward sweep to remove the intake manifold. All just to get to the valve cover bolts. A few steps further and I could have removed the head and just done the head gasket since I was that far in there. But a blown head gasket wasn't the issue. Massive amounts of oil in the spark plug tubes (coil over plug system) meant a leaking valve cover gasket. It was the spark plug tube gaskets, but it still counts as a valve cover leak since those are apart of the valve cover gasket kit. FELT SUPER ACCOMPLISHED AFTER DOING THIS JOB! 👋💪💪💪😁

With the bp 1.8 non interference your method is fine but with interference engines it's poor practice to set the pistons to tdc THEN set cam timing. Set your crank timing to 60ish degrees btdc, then set cams, then bring your crank timing up to tdc. This insures no contacting issues when setting timing regardless of engine type.

I'd like to add a couple things. If you're changing the head gasket you need to 100% replace the head bolts with head studs. I highly recommend ARP head studs(It looks like that's what they're using in this video based on the nut design). I use that brand on my 6.0 diesel and torqued down to 210lbs, they hold exponentially greater than the stock Ford head bolts. You want to do this because any other performance upgrade is going to put additional force on the head bolts and increase the chance of blowing a gasket or other damage. Bigger turbo, bigger injectors, whatever. You can't just add stuff and expect it not to add stress to other components. It might not be as cool but investing time into the engine block before accessories is the way to go. The other thing is cleaning the heads and block. I'm used to diesels where most internal components turn black so I don't know if gas cars just stay clean or not but people go crazy trying to make their heads shine and they clean the head flat but think the stained metal also needs to come out. By over cleaning it, they warp the head. My recommendation is to buy a 100 pack of razor blades, WD-40, pb blaster, brake cleaner, whatever and use that to keep a layer of lubricant on the head and go through about 20 razor blades lightly cleaning all four surfaces. Once you're absolutely sure the head is clean... spray it again and go through a couple more razor blades. More stuff will come off. Then you're good.

Man I had to replace the head gasket on my honda civie today. I'd pay 5 to 6000 for a miata just because of how easy it is to replace it compared to any other vehicle I've ever seen. This has honestly inspired me to make a life long project out of making a car company that just destroys every other car company. Insanely reliable and insanely easy to work on with super easy to replace parts that are cheap. If you are considering buying a car with a blown head gasket, research how easy it is to replace it and go from there.

The miata is probably the easiest car to do head gaskets on too. It's a rwd 4 cylinder so it's a short engine that isn't transverse so everything you need to get to is right in front of you. V6 and v8 engines are set at odd angles and usually fill the engine bay way more so you almost Always have to remove the engine (or the cab if you are doing a large diesel like a Ford f250). Transverse engines sit in a way that makes getting to your timing gear at the front of the engine hard to get to. The miata is popular with enthusiasts because it is so forgiving to newcomers and simple to keep going. If you want to do head gaskets on something more complicated the cost can add up fast with needed tools and engine swaps are usually easier.

Should you start with a visual look at the head to make sure all the valves are closed and the next rotations should be opening for the intake stroke on cylinder #1 or what one the firing sequence starts at? If the valves were just opening and cylinder 1 was rolled to tdc it'd hit the piston. So set in place after checking valves are right before opening & #1 piston is about to go down.

I bought a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse spider for $250 apparently the mechanic boyfriend of the female selling It said it couldn’t be fixed because he couldn’t fix it so apparently it was impossible for anyone else too. Well I live two blocks away got it home changed the alternator starter as this was something that needed to be done as the car wouldn’t start intermittently so I figured change em both well when I took off the power wires from the starter to alternator back to the battery terminals the wire was so corroded it had reached all the way to the starter after it started it kept shorting of the second you released the key from the start position I kept hearing the faintest sucking sound it was a very small vacuum line hidden between the engine and the fire wall plugged it back it and started like a champ had only 67k miles. The next day when the original owners boyfriend saw me driving he blew me all day and night for a month straight, saying I ripped them off and that he wanted HIS car back. the girlfriend called me and told me to ignore him and keep the car she apparently had her friend unplug all kinds of wires and hoses because he was using the car to cheat. I had helped her with an older Toyota as I buy and own multiple cars and she wanted that car GONE no matter what. The boyfriend tried to get me to pay more since he couldn’t get the car back acting like I was stupid enough to pay more after already making a deal lol. He said since the cars running now we need to renegotiate the deal he wanted another $800 I told him sure and ignores him. He just wouldn’t give up on trying to get the car Back. His gf told me that she had to sleep with her keys around her neck as he would try to sneak out while she would be asleep.
