Having the weight of the pinion gearbox being low in the bb area, it probably makes the bike feel better on long sustained descents. Gives it a more planted feel. Have long fire roads up and long descents down, weight doesn't play as big of a factor.

Really the only thing I miss from my motocross days is the weight makes the bike so much more stable in the air (far less wind sensitive too) as compared to a bicycle. My new Transition Relay ebike brings back some of that reassurance in the air and also lets the suspension work better it seems

Hey Matty, as a former racer I really appreciate your honesty evaluating lower end bikes as it might inspire people to understand they don't need to spend a million dollars for a bicycle and get out there and ride. I live in SoCal and have ridden in Colorado even did Vail pass! I am so jealous even though I live by some mountains out here but I love the scenery where you live!

Have you ridden a sub 18 lbs. bike? I enjoy the heavier bikes for some DH riding, but the ability to nearly levitate over obstacles really changes things.

I've got several mtbs. Three hard tails and three full suspension bikes. There is no substitute for a carbon full suspension bike. The trails I ride here in Tennessee always have some sort of gnar in them. My lap times on a hardtail suffer significantly compared to my carbon full suspension. If I had some smooth trails with smooth climbs I can see riding a hardtail as long as it's not heavy as a pig.

I think it depends on where you live. We dont have long climbs to long downhill sections and we have repeated steep technical climbs and xc style trails where a heavy bike will really make you pay. I don't think I'd mind if i had these long awesome DH runs.

Was that a cemetery right at the entrance of the climbing trail? Kind of sets the stage for the day, if it is...I love my hardtail just like you like yours, but that washout moment is exactly why the full suspension is a thing. If you're going to ride fast and hard over tech the suspension keeps the wheel from bouncing off the ground. I think lighter bikes are really for folks who want to do a really technical kind of ride, flips and jumps, hopping over obstacles, etc. Heavier material will soak up vibration more, it's all good. That's a nice bike glad to see you ride it!

Virginia Canyon is great, Drop Shaft is probably my favorite front range trail now, especially that fast roller coaster section at the bottom with the big step ups. And yes it's fairly hardtail friendly for a front range trail, not much chunk at all.

My Orbea Laufey H30 weighs about 35 lbs. While it’s definitely rougher on downhill sections compared to my Stumpjumper, it’s an absolute blast to ride. Learn from my experience: buy once, not two or three times. Make sure you choose a bike that meets the standards for the trails you'll be riding.

Rotational weight matters more than dry weight. A bike lighter rear wheel (or a 27.5) bike that's 40 pounds will be more comfortable to pedal than a 28 pound bike that has a heavy back tire

I’d really like a gearbox. My Fuel EX 9.8 XT is in the shop awaiting parts for four months to the tune of $1,700. All I did was ride very slowly through some leaves and pick up a hidden stick, which ripped off my derailleur and damaged the rear triangle.

If I were in the market for a new MTB, I don't think the Pinion passes a cost-benefit analysis for me. It makes a lot of sense if you are doing lots of long-distance bikepacking trips, where the durability and low maintenance of the drivetrain is a big plus. But for weekend-warrior trail riding the extra 1K or doesn't make sense to me.

On any non shuttled ride, way more time is spent climbing. So makes little sense to have a bike that is optimized for descending.

I definitely need to check out that trail next season. I'm thinking of going back to an HT for it simplicity. I don't ride as much or push as hard just because I'm getting older. But at the same time, I'm nervous about going back to an HT. I have my eye on a Ti frame. A Revel Tirade. Has anyone had any ride time on Tirade or a Ti frame? What does the ride experience feel like?

It's give and take. I prefer bikes on the heavier side as long as it makes sense. A heavy bike with cheap components are always a no go for me. Anyhoo, heavier bikes feel alot more planted which is why i prefer them. Anything less than 28lbs is too light for me. the sweet spot for me is 30-32 lbs and I like to climb.

Matty, did you indicate at 03:45, the reason for the need to change out the bar and stem? I'm about to take delivery on a steel hard tail from Retrotec in the newsboy style of frame, and I was wondering if something didn't mix with your steel hard tail, or was it a rider discrepancy. Thank you for the video.
