I’d love to get into some Japanese cards, but I’m also just trying to keep up with how quick all these products are released in the US too. I still haven’t seen the Celebrations lunchboxes yet, and the Jolteon, Flareon, and Vaporeon alt art boxes are gonna be hitting stores now too. From an investment standpoint Japanese base sets make all the sense in the world. As a collector you want Charizard’s first card, right? Well…the Japanese card came out 3 years before the US version. That’s such a big gap that it makes the Japanese version the “rookie” card IMO. I think long term the Japanese cards will be the ones to own.

maybe the spike in value on the english version is caused by the influencers(for example Logan Paul). but for me the japanese version of the cards are the OG, time will tell. im still shocked that i was able today to buy the ivy pikachu promo from 1996 with the wrong artist name and jigglypuff promo for just 10 dollars each...those 2 are THE FIRST POKEMON CARDS EVER after the carddass format and they are still so cheap.
@PokemonHolo
@PokemonHolo 2 жыл бұрын
The price hike was a demand from Japan itself if you ask me The older japanese holo's value is allot lower. Because the boxes had more packs in the vintage era and allot of the sets always had a holo..asx didn't seem to know that. Modern Japanese value for me is more in the sealed product of 'special' sets like climax, shining legends etc Other sealed jp product just doesn't have allot of demand and won't outshine the english variant

I kind of fell I to this a little bit. Having a hard time finding product I decided to collect some Japanese sets. Now I know that we eventually get these sets in English but a lot of times cards get skipped in English to another set and sometimes it's not to have the Japanese cause then all the cards are in the set. Like what happened with Eevee Heroes and Evolving Skies. So yeah. But finding singles are ssssoooo much harder.

Hmm I don’t know if I agree. I think something has potentially permanently switched in the market. Japanese cards are now mainstream and more common. It’s never been easier to get them. The quality is WAY higher than English to the point where my English cards look flat compared to my Japanese cards. I think we’ve had a bubble lately in Japanese but I the new low will be higher than before. More people have caught on to how awesome these cards are. Also for gem mint collectors Japanese cards are WAY less frustrating. English drives me nuts. Most of my pack fresh cards suck and have some white corner or are cut way off center or have scratch lines from factory machinery. It’s ridiculous. I think vintage WOTC will always do better than vintage Japanese because culturally the English release was far more impactful and it’s all the nostalgia and English speakers who collected as a kid keeping thar WOTC market high. I feel like vintage English > vintage Japanese. Japanese promos > English. Japanese modern > English.

Japanese cards will always be my go to. Certain cards you just can't get in English like the Festa Pikachu cards (correct me if I'm wrong).

Also, look at rarity. Japanese sets have smaller print runs. They are less copies of them than their English counterparts. I've opened a bunch of English and I completely wasted my money because the chase cards were shit condition.

Completely agree. If you don't live in Japan, investing in Japanese cards (unless they're some kind of absolute exclusive to Japan, never to be released in English) is a bad move. Collect them all you want. They're beautiful cards and always of better quality but the language barrier will ultimately lessen their value here.
