Disrespect is on the rise because we are operating on lack of community, strained family relationships, and spiritual grounding. How do you expect kids to act without morality/ moral code and no one to hold them accountable?

@@fatbroccoli8 Absolutely. Unfortunately I think technology is a big part of the problem. It's not uncommon for kids to have Kindle Fires, iPads, iPhones, some portable gaming device, and gaming consoles. And what happens when they drop it and the screen breaks? Most of the time they just get another one because it's easier to give the kid something to watch on than deal with them. They don't learn how to take care of their things and they certainly don't learn to respect their things.

My mother is my best friend. I respect because she has given me a reason to. She has always been there for me. She has always guided me in the right direction. Even though she yells at me sometimes she has always treated me with respect. That is why I respect her. You can't just demand respect from your kids if you don't give them any. It's a parents job to be a role model. My mother has not only shown me what respect is. She has also shown me unconditional love. Parents should be focused on guiding their kids down the right path and not earning their kids respect. If parents are good role models and teachers than respect will come naturally. This is coming from a 14 year old kid who loves and respects her mom with good reason!

Speaking as someone who’s 27, I honestly think that my generation and also gen Z are less respectful. Few key things: Definition: respect is to hold someone in regard for their abilities, achievements, or qualities Generic applicability to elders: it’s perceived that we should respect our elders even if they haven’t achieved much for the simple fact that they made their way through life and as a result carry their own unique wisdom. Some may have even raised a family, which is an accomplishment to anyone who understands what being a parent means. Generational shifts: 60’s - 70’s flower power and hippies: rebelled because they thought their elders messed up politically. They also rebelled for more freedoms. Nothing in the many videos and documentaries I saw (which included candid street interviews) showed that they disrespected elders as people. Just didn’t like their views. 90’s angst: disillusioned youngsters rebelled against the sterilization of society. They rebelled against the fakeness of social constructs and the white picket fence American dream (music see grunge, movies see American Beauty). Again, maybe I’m blind but I couldn’t see disrespect directed at someone as a person Current: we blame the past generations for everything. Sure, we have our strong arguments. But what we also do is not respect others and elders enough to actually listen and see if there is value in their experiences. We’re standing on a pedestal thinking that we would have done things better, forgetting that the world was a different place, forgetting that every person is struggling in their own world. Our disrespect is not only towards concepts or philosophies but it has transcended to disrespecting people on a large scale. It’s not just elders. It’s anyone that doesn’t fit our narrative.

i’m 16, in highschool it’s so sad how there’s that group of kids disrespect teachers and peers like in some of my classes the 2 or 3 kids be cursing out the teacher and i feel so bad. like i’m my chemistry class and my teacher she’s kinda old and she has two kids and i just feel for her when the kids are being so mean to her it’s like she’s not only a teacher but a human with feelings like imagine how that feels. i cant, i wish some teens would really think about there view on other people to a certain extent like u cant say what u want. u cant cross a line. it’s scary but i’m glad that not all teens like me are respectful and smart.

*For me personally being apart of this younger generation when speaking on being disrespectful I’m respectful to a certain extent. Like the older generation would say and what I heard a lot was you should respect your elders and respect is earned not given and this and that and turn around and seeing most of those same elders being disrespectful is like ok if I don’t know you or even if I do know you why should I respect you when I’ve seen you act different and be disrespectful in a sense I’m saying don’t hold me to higher standard than you hold yourself because I’m going to fail at some point and your not going to like it or what I do about it when I get back up*

The problem is the older generation. It’s their off spring that’s being disrespectful. We as a people allowed other people to infiltrate our house holds and tell us how to discipline our kids. And this is the end results. Now just like the outside world, they don’t respect us. And instead of the older generation taking responsibility for their kids lack of respect, they now blame the children as if they raised themselves. Which in some cases that has happen as well but that just furthers the point that if you didn’t raise them you can’t except them to respect you. 💯

I’m seeing more and more replies so I’d just like to say that I mean no disrespect to anyone who replies I’m just up for having a conversation about the mentality of my generation. All due respect to you Kevin Hart, I don’t think it’s productive to have a conversation about a whole generation saying “this generation is too this or this generation is too this” without having a single person from said generation there to defend themselves. Would y’all be alright with a group of old white men talking about why minority communities are still the way they are? The only difference I really see in our generation is how everything our generation says or does is recorded. The older generation could have just as many disrespectful people, and our generation wouldn’t know because y’all are allowed to forget your passed faults we’re not. Hell some of the most disrespectful people we know came from an older generation. Eminem, Richard Prior, George Carlin. If this generation is “more disrespectful” what do you define as disrespect? And where did we learn that from?

Naw kid, this generation is lost. Kevin don't need to have a representative from this generation. The actions you display daily is enough to judge. I'm an inner city teacher of 25 years. I can most definitely speak on this. I have students that will curse me out and the parents are no better. I grew up in the 70s and was born in the 60s. I completely respect my elders.

@sebrofk_
@sebrofk_ 4 жыл бұрын
Drew Holley all due respect to you sir only one opinion from a teacher can not sum up mentality of a whole generation. That fact that you feel like you can say “this generation is lost” when you’ve dealt with probably .1% of what this generation is speaks to the arrogance and ignorance of the change of times our generation has to face on a daily basis. I have very clear direction in my life and what I want to do, I have complete and total respect for my elders yet It’s seems like the respect isn’t always returned the same for the simple reason that I’m not as old as them. When you talk about respect, should you respect someone just because they’re older? No, respect is a 2 way street and if respect isn’t taught from the home it’s never gained. Just because you grew up in the 60-70s does not mean that you can then make an assumption about a whole generation now. I’ve worked with people well over their 50s that had no respect for a soul that came their way do you see me saying the older generation “is lost”? No I’m not saying that because my one experience cannot sum up the experiences of a whole generation. I hope you don’t go into those inner city school and talk to those kids like you know better. Like we aren’t facing more financial ruin then any other generation has ever faced, like how college prices increased I kid you not 1200% since the 1990s twice as much as health care costs increased, like we as generation don’t have more hardships to take on than any other generation. Also I constantly hear stories about how kids in the 60-80s used to sneak out and drink and smoke with their friends and sneak back in the house after curfew so was that considered respectful back then? To go behind your elders backs and do everything they told you not to and then lie to their face? And I feel like this point went completely over your head but I’ll say it one more time. If respect is not taught from home then it’s never gained. If this generation really is “more disrespectful” then you and your generation failed at teaching us what respect really is and what it means to y’all.
@jwdathefax377

Malcolm Osbourne - Learned it from your parents. The best example was when they talked about how calling people’s parents used to actually mean something. Of course like they said, there were kids in their generation who acted the same but you didn’t see it as much. Taking the internet completely out of the conversation, it’s just the difference of what a person personally seen with their own eyes in person as a young person, compared to what they see with their own eyes as an adult with the younger generation. Parents talking to their kids like they’re adults and not setting boundaries, equals those same kids disrespecting other adults outside of their household. These kids being raised by parents who are from “the hip hop generation” mixed with them not wanting to discipline their kids physically and not sticking to any OTHER forms of discipline is what we’re seeing.
@sebrofk_
@sebrofk_ 4 жыл бұрын
Drew Holley might I add that race definitely played a role in this when you talk about inner city schools a majority of which are filled with minor families that have seen nothing BUT disrespect and hardship wether it be from police or a system put in place to keep us poor and working 24/7. I guaranteed you if you taught in the most preppy white neighborhood you can find, you as an individual would be surprised with the amount of respect that those students give those teachers, because at a young age those student’s parents didn’t have to worry about the next time their kids are gonna eat they didn’t have to worry about keeping they’re only home so their kids didn’t have to be homeless, so they actually had time to teach them to be respectful it’s not like respect just flies into out of nowhere. Those same kids you teach don’t have that privilege. They go home to a frustrated parent just trying to make sure they don’t lose everything while taking care of their child. Please give those kids you teach the respect they never got.

I DID NOT WANT to treat my children that way and have them scared of me or scared to tell me IMPORTANT things. They ARE more assertive than I was allowed to be which appears DISRESPECTFUL to my Mom (Baby Boomer). Great topic fellas. Sad part is I only see it getting worse. It's the babies raising babies era, it's the you can't put your hands on them era. I if you don't get them right before their teenage years then you might have lost them. I have 4 teenagers in my house who I raised and I'm a step father to 3 of them but I let them know early on who was in charge. I'm 56 and I always tried to make a rule to not whip/spank after teenage yrs. Let me just say this, my stepchildren don't show me nearly the respect as my biological children show me and yes I raised all 7 of them. So some of the problem may be even deep than what I called it, but yeah it's definitely a problem.

Spank you said it...the power has been taken from the parents. You can’t beat that a** anymore without getting arrested. I was told that by the police, that if I put my hands on my son, they’ll arrest me. I don’t condone abuse at all but some of these kids need they a** tore up. That’s real talk!!! I don’t believe in a parent being on the same level as the child. I’m not trying to be my child’s best friend. My wife and I are the authority and they need to adhere to the rules within the home, point blank.

They certainly have...I joined the Navy later in life, so therefore was surrounded by alot of young adults, and I can honestly say the way they speak to their "elders" OMG!!...Absolutely no respect, as a Caribbean woman, there is no way in hell we could speak to anyone that way when I was their age. It is so ingrained in us, that even as an adult I do not disrespect my elders.

I think this has ALWAYS been going on, we are just in the age of technology where everything is seen from all over AND old school discipline has been outlawed, timeouts and "go 2 your room" don't work.

My thoughts are continue to raise your kids to be respectful and to be kind to others and if they loose there way do your best to help them find there way back because nobody's perfect but also when they outta line check em as for NBA young boy I tgink think it's something mentally wrong with him period

I'm only 29 and when I lived in Mississippi in 4th grade, my teacher would send me home with a paper for my mom to sign and when I didnt bring that paper back the next day signed my teacher would take me out into the hall and paddle me three times. They ask u if u got any bruises on ur behind first and if u say no, u get paddled. One time I thought I'd be smart and say yes, I fell and have a bruise on my behind. But my teacher took me to the bathroom and said show me, so I did and she saw I lied and took me back to the hall and proceeded to paddle me.

Nah, I'm 40 and the generations before me weren't behaving like mine did towards elders and it will get worse because those principles have been somewhat lost. In my generation parents were able to discipline their children much differently then today.

Until a child becomes an adult and develops that confidence to be able to differentiate respect from a challenge, will they be able to handle situations like this the way we think they should.

Nope not really, it gets worse everything generation. Kids are absorbing way more from the outside, and with discipline restrictions and less time to spend with kids, plus some dont even know how to parent. It's made it even worse.

This conversation lacks a young perspective. Our mouths aren't a result of a lack of discipline from adults. Our access to information is. When adults make mistakes and misinform us and we venture out on our own paths seeking our own solutions because of the adults that failed us before, we loose respect for them. Simple
