As a former BigLaw firm lawyer, I’d say my happiness has significantly increased as an in house lawyer!

Your points about wanting to do meaningful work really resonated with me. I work in the family/criminal side of things, so I do see a lot of the burnout that you mentioned. Great video!

It's so great to hear from someone actually in the space, thanks for sharing your perspective on this!

2L. Not about the money. I will only work for myself. I’m here to advocate for animals and other civil rights issues. I’m the oldest in my class. Everyone wants big law & big money. There’s your source of misery. 1/2 the class is having a nervous breakdown starting on day 1 of 1L. Or 0L!! I did that in undergrad and no more. I decided I was going to do law school my way and practice my way & keep my mental & physical health.

How happy would you be if your workday was 7:30am to 9pm Monday thru Saturday, and the short day was Sunday from 8am to 3pm???

I'd say that for most people it is really rough.

@@AngelaVorpahl I've heard horror stories about those kind of sweatshop hours. Makes me glad I took my JD on a completely different career path.

Great video. I’m curious about the impact or leverage that a new graduate (non traditional) can have as far as the unconventional lane.

I think the fact that you're even thinking about it is a great thing. The positive energy and curiosity that you bring as a junior associate is some of the absolute greatest value that you have, especially since lawyers who have been doing the job for a long time tend to be burnt out and disillusioned. So you have more impact than you think. And in literally one year you'll have people coming into the firm more junior than you, and then you get to start to be the type of boss/leader/mentor to them that you hope to find for yourself.

Total unconventional lane here.

Really enjoying your channel :) I have my bachelors in law and a law clerk diploma. I was originally planning on becoming a lawyer but I have decided to aim to be a paralegal so that I can still have a career in law but a more balanced lifestyle. I am currently working as a legal assistant and would like to move up to paralegal. Do you think I should do more schooling to help me achieve my goals and if so, what type of program? Can you please advise of how you think I could reach my goal of moving up to paralegal. Thank you

Hi Kayla! Good question. I never worked as a paralegal before law school, but a good chunk of law students do. So if you're interested in connecting with others who have gone the paralegal route, I'm happy to send you the link to join the free Law School Network FB group I created for law students and aspiring law students looking for clarity and support in their journey!

You can have a balanced lifestyle as a lawyer. It’s a choice. Most choose chaos for the money. I can practice part time for myself only and have pretty sweet money, by my own standard. It’s a choice.
