The interview reinforced to me how people outside of America view race. In America, what we define as "black" is different than how Africans see it. I think Africans (and other people of color outside of America) define black as anyone having strong, distinctive West African features (KRS1, Leslie Jones, Tarana Burke). The reality is, white people will probably still view this woman as black, even if she tells them she's not black.

Nobody In africa consider themselves black we know we are black but that’s not what we identify as we identify with our tribes/ethnicitys and nationality we don’t have a race system in africa not everyone in the world got a race system that’s just in the us where people are category by race 💀

Have you checked your 23andme? This isn’t taught much but, there were about 1300+ Malagasy slaves shipped to Virginia in the 1700s. Some black Americans still have the dna in us. You’ll see it when small amounts of Indonesian, oceanic, southeast African, Filipino etc show up often. Also, I got matched with two Malagasy cousin matches on ancestry.
@JayFocused6 ай бұрын
Madagascar to Virginia? You know that was a LONG boat ride. 😂 But I think I heard something about this before. An immediate family member of mine did a test and it showed a small % of filipino, so I wouldn't be surprised if I have a very distant Malagasy relative.
@Kreolevybz6 ай бұрын
@@JayFocused Yes, that’s why it was such a small amount taken. However, this is documented. I myself had no clue why the southeast Asian + African kept appearing until I did further research. One of my cousins has the most common last name in Madagascar-rakotomalala. There’s other Black Americans who’ve found Malagasy matches as well.

I’m African-Americn/BA with Malagasy heritage and I became instantly in love with just about every dang thing Malagasy lmfao 🤣. I am also learning Malagasy language and I am really good at the pronunciations, like almost native… I completely into the culture and adapted it to my AA/BA (Soulaa/Soulaan(i).. And something I created on my own, if you are BA of Malagasy descent, then you are Tsolaany (Malagasy spelling), it has a meaning, “The Good”. And it would be pronounced “Tsulaany” more like it. Me and my use to always watch things abt Mada when I was young growing up and many other diaspora countries and beyond on travel and Discovery. She’s a n ancestor now, but if she was alive I would tell her and I think she would love them as well (knowing we have ancestry 🩸). I was always raised to be proud of African descent, it’s quite low but my facial features is perfectly Malagasy lol. I connect well with my other African ancestral cultures too. But Madagascar called out to me the most 🗣️

I guess Tanzania/Kenya, maybe not sure. I like the surrounding places by Mada, Camoros/Mayotte/La Reunion etc. Does Malgasy culture call to you at all ?

It’s interesting but not surprising that she doesn’t identify with the classification as black considering how recent Colonialism was there. Most of the world has a negative connotation with the word and it’s always been strategically in the favor of the Colonizer to get the colonized people to not identify with each other. Also to be fair, she lives in Africa where there are people so dark that they could be considered black literally as opposed to just as a racial classification. Good stuff. She’s a pretty girl with attractive energy too 👍🏾

When Africans from different tribes where brought by force to America they lost over time their tribal affiliation. So this concept of being black appeared as a way to unite against adversity. Africans in Africa see themselves mostly as part of a particular tribe. Although the concept of blackness has sipped throughout the continent.
