In the movie it’s a complete role reversal but shows how in Barbieland (matriarchy) women are in power but still make the world safe for both men and women. When the Kens take over (patriarchy) the women become unsafe, are sexualised and brainwashed to be less than men. There is an increase in violence and women are exploited (it’s a true representation that has been exaggerated to explain the difference in the systems. For example, unequal wages, unequal access to opportunities, failure to talk about women’s accomplishments, defined gender roles, political representation, women’s health never being scientifically researched because it’s a man’s world and how women are expected to be submissive and nurturing. And it’s also about going from girl to woman and the expectations that come with it. It’s a reminder that our mums are experiencing life for the first time too. They’re still just a girl learning and living in patriarchy. As we get older we realise the sacrifices our mothers have made for us to live our life.
