The old ones are the most expensive and for the most part has the worst game selections. The new 150 in 1 version is cheap and have a selection of good games. Flash cart: 100$ --> Multi cart:

Some of the games on multi carts are not even the full game. Like on the 256in1 gradious is about 3 or 4 stages then loops. I did not know that until I bought the real deal.

Multi-carts and a clone system were my introduction to the NES, because of that I've played plenty of Japan-only games as well as hacked NES games in my childhood without knowing, so yeah, I have a bit of a personal attachment to NES and Famicom multi-carts, and I'd say that they're totally worth it for 2 reasons: 1 - You never know what you're going to get, and often times you get games you couldn't get on NES officially, either because they're Japan-only, or because they're hacks! 2 - You can get multiple games in the same cart for a cheap price!

I second that, I had a original nes but I had a stack of famiclones cartridge that I used with my NASA adapter lol.

It's a good way to get a leg up on games that are otherwise too expensive to justify, BUT what you'll pay for a multicart is a good fraction of what a flash cart would cost, and that's pretty much all of them, letting you play what you want while you look for carts at a sane price.
@ThatLightNovelGuy8 жыл бұрын
I found it weird seeing that in some parts of the world the only way to get some titles like Dizzy Treasure Island on the NES is through the Quatro multi-carts.

the 150 in 1 multicart was the best purchase in my collection. I was able to sell alot of my cartridges and make my money back. Its the cart I play most often. A flash cart requires some technical ability which I do not have. I like to play NES games but I'm not a collector. It's so ironic that Pat collects multicarts.

Multicarts are also good way to get some rarities. For example Tengen Tetris. If the multicart, be it an old ones from '90s or a modern chinese one, has a tetris it is 99% certainly the Tengen one. Its actually rare to see the Nintendo Tetris in them. I have a thing for multicarts, especially for the old bright grey and well built Supervision carts. They were all the rage when I was a kid and quite common too here in Finland. Supervision carts were also quite "honest" in a way that they usually did not have that many duplicates and if they did it they were modded some way. Like 80 different games and 5 Contras with different default weapons hacked in each or such.

+Drink a Beer and Play a Game I feel like flash carts are ridiculously priced for what they are, yeah software development costs money but not $130 a cart worth. I feel like they are capitalizing on the fact that "you won't need to buy any more games". I can see a price point of around $60 being reasonable, I would totally buy a flash cart for the price of a brand new game, because I'm sure more man hours went into developing the game than the flash cart.
@Drinkabeerandplayagameofficial8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Polli not a bad point, the fact that an everdrive is 250 is a bit nuts...but also torn because I also think "an entire library on a physical cart"...tough call
@jokuemt8 жыл бұрын
@joe you have to understand that making flash cards isn't free, parts themselves costs a lot of money, plus someone has to make the actual PCB board and the software too(which is usually made by one person), plus the plastic casing and label, not to mention support and keeping the flash card updated and in the end it is really niche product hence why flash cards are so expensive. Sure you can buy Chinese knockoff for much cheaper, but with it you get zero support, quality is a lot worse and the original creator doesn't get anything from it either. Plus for example N64 everdrive plays all n64 plus 64DD games regardless of region, and considering how much some of those goes for its much cheaper option, plus you cant use emulation as argument since N64 emulation is just terrible and many games doesn't even play properly, or at all.

Can't say in my own opinion multi-carts replace the original titles in most cases, but they are a fun way to collect in their own right as you can stumble upon some Famicom only releases and odd little bootleg games like the various Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat remakes, assorted rom hacks, etc.
@melvinpunymeyer81048 жыл бұрын
I bought one of those 150 in 1 carts that they sell on Aliexpress. It's cool and well worth the money to someone who just wants to play some NES games from time to time, but if you are a serious NES enthusiast, then it is missing a ton of amazing titles. It sucks that their is no cheap Everdrive version for the NES like the Genesis has, but it's still worth the price for a serious NES enthusiast.
@PablojRomero4028 жыл бұрын
In my country a flashcart cost 200 dollars or more. So its cheaper to buy those new chinese multicarts, of course this is also because the famicom versions of those carts are chaper than the NES versions (here famicom clones and pirate carts are really popular very few people collect NES carts)
@Kara_Kay_Eschel2 жыл бұрын
I have a 143-in-1 and an HD nes clone since there was the limited supply and scalpers for the NES classic mini. Also, that did not have all the games I had, most but not all, and some games that I did not own but wanted as a kid (friends/relatives had or rented countless times or seen adverts for, or seen on KZbin.)

Oh yea lol I love collecting multicarts too, both in NES format & Famicom along with Demakes (games ported backwards like SNES to NES) In fact I've showed you some at RetroSoCal Pat, like the Asder 20-in-1 cart that has all the Caltron 6-in-1 games along with other games made by them :)

My first console was a NES and the first catridge i got was a "18 games in 1" chinese catridge that had Dig Dug, Donkey Kong 1 and 3, Circus Charlie, Contra, Super Mario, Arkanoid, "Rockman" 1 2 and 3, Duck Hunt and some other games i dont remember. I used to play the living shit out of it and didnt bought any other game for about 2 years.

+dep3che It's ridiculous that they sell it for such price, in Poland you go to your local bazaar and buy them for something like 3$, and if you want you can get some famiclone for 10$ with it;) They really rip-off American customers with prices like these.

Hey, I live in Estonia and I've been collecting fake multicarts for a while. I have a big collection of really rare carts that were exported to the Russian market in the beginning of 90s. There are such gems as Mario 9, 10, 11, 13 *(crazy mods). I would be happy to exchange them with some typical NES titles *(even mario, duck hunt cart) because here in Estonia we never had original cartridges or original NES.
@123hellstorm8 жыл бұрын
you can also play hacked games on an ever drive as well. I have 3 different versions of hacked castlevania games on there. 1 being blood moon. they are well worth the 100 or so to get one. I own the nes, snes, n64, turbo grafx 16, gameboy, and sega genesis versions of flash carts.
@howard818 жыл бұрын
The problem with multicarts is that I have no attention span for the game. If I track down a cart I don't already have, it's exciting to play the game for the first time and try to beat it. It's the same feeling I had back in the '80s when I wanted a NES or 2600 game for then and finally getting it. Or lending/borrowing carts with friends. I don't get that feeling with multicarts or flashcarts.
@dpgreene2 жыл бұрын
They sometimes contain rom hacks and Asian pirate titles (like downports of Super Nintendo games) which you would probably never come across. It’s hard to even find the roms for these sometimes. I have an everdrive and tons of og cartridges but multicarts are just fun, you never know what you’re going to find.

Glad to see a larger KZbinr be on the side of flash carts. I have an Everdrive for damn near every system I own. I'm more of a console collector since the games take up way too much room in my small apartment. I have tons of physical games too and only buy flash carts and hack consoles once they've gone out of production. I also find something really cool about flash carts and in a way collect them as their own thing too.

Do flashcarts have battery saves? I've been debating on getting a Super Everdrive but I don't want to drop the money on it if they don't since mostly I'm wanting to play things like Secret of Mana II and Final Fantasy 3/6 on them lol.
@MaaZeus8 жыл бұрын
Yes, Everdrive supports saves. Even old Powerpak supported battery saves though you had to do some round-about stuff to make it word, but for Everdrive just save the game normally just like with real cart and thats it.

I would say no when flashcarts exist; unless there are multicarts that has hard to find mappers for games like Metal Force (which is a solid Korean game, IMO).
@Rouz1028 жыл бұрын
+PinMike8666 I tend to disagree. A flashcart is around $100. I got a multicart with pretty much every single game that I wanted on it and I only paid about $15 for it. If I had the money to spend then yea I'd go straight for the flashcart, but for people on a budget a multicart is great. Just get one that has a game listing with full authentic games. Mine had 150 officially licensed games unlike those carts that have 5 different rom hacks of the same game.
@pinmike86668 жыл бұрын
Good answer, as flashcarts are pricey and some cheap multicarts might have some unexpected gem like Batman or Power Blade 2.

As an avid NES & SNES gamer, just build a friggin' emulator if you can't invest the money into buying the real carts. Most decent multicarts are technically illegal anyway, so save your money to just buy decent hardware & controllers for an emulator.
@euphoria_74778 жыл бұрын
+Eric Winkel With that logic, emu's are "technically illegal" too.
@hero2278 жыл бұрын
+Joe Snes That's what I mean. If it doesn't bother you to play/buy illegal multicarts, then you might as well just download the entire NES library and play them on an emulator.
@euphoria_74778 жыл бұрын
+Eric Winkel Ah, my bad, I got ya now. Personally I'd rather just wait until I find the actual cart, but I understand some people don't have the money or patience to do that. Also, the more people that just use emu's, the more carts there are for me!
@RetrOrigin8 жыл бұрын
+Eric Winkel The whole point of getting a Flashcart is to play games on ogirinal hardware. Also "investing" money on some real carts like Little Samson makes no sense if all you want is play the game (again, on original hardware)
@Trevin_Taylor8 жыл бұрын
+Sean Henry I think I agree with your technical interpretation, however if challenged I'm not sure that's legally defensible. again, think I may agree with your interpretation, I just dont know that it would stand up in court. it might be ruled as violating the spirit of the law, meaning if your version is correct than all that copyright law is entirely useless. you may be right, but I think you'd lose anyway. no court is going to just throw out all copyright law and protections of intellectual property, especially against mega corporations.
