I own the Donner and a nueman TLM and I use my donner dc 87 more than the Neumann. Donner really out did themselves with this mic. The raw sound coming into my headphones when recording on the DC 87 is so crisp and clean it really surprised me. As a gospel singer and rapper I needed something that was versatile, and even though Neumann is the industries go to mic company you don’t have to spend that much. The DC 87 will surprise you.

Really good comparison! From a mix engineering point of view, I think the U87AI has the most linear frequency curve to encapture your vocal characteristics, thus making it easier to balance it in a mix because you need to do less EQ'ing and high-shelves to blend the brightness of your voice, which in return could save you hours of work in the studio when working with clients. I get its price tag, but it can be hard to justify it as taste also comes into play when cheaper alternatives are close enough to sounding good as well :)

Makes sense 👍🏼 …personally, I wouldn’t spend the money on one, but I do love my Neumann M-149 and want to try the upcoming Neumann M49 reissue 😍

Dig the twin most slightly, but the dc-87 sounded great for how little it cost. Once you mix your dc-87 most people won't be able to tell if it was 3k or $100 mic.

I agree!

Great singing!!! I might be an unpopular commenter, but personally I think I still prefer the Neumann (without taking the cost into account.) This seems like the difference between a Gibson and an Epiphone. Basically the same.

What happened to your SA87?

Sonically, nice testing, and I agree with your conclusions. Unanswered: how would each mic hold up over time, especially re wear and tear? Specifically, corrosion from humidity, and use by singers working close in to the mic (saliva)? I suspect component durability may be much better in the Twin and the ai. Note this is speculation, but also, I think, a valid point to explore beyond solely comparing how the mics perform sonically.

The Donner sounds like trash but the United twin sounded really really close to the Neumann (to me anyway). Keep the content comin!!

your comparisons are 'interesting' and revealing regarding some of the characteristics, but, could you add the microphone self noise to your testing? ie: wind up the preamp and let us hear the differences of the mic internal circuitry? this is another dimension of testing that's totally absent. ie: what background noises are there that are also creeping into the audio chain, and, how much? this is often where some of the detail on lower-cost mics is way different from those that are more expensive.

I think United twin is even more than enough! Good job 👏

Hi, I'm thinking of ordering DC 87. Any chance you can share whats inside this mic, PCB and capsule? Thanks

I don’t know those kinds of technical specs 😅

To my ears, the Donner sat the best in the mix, and the United was the worst. The Neumann had some extra high end sensitivity that didn't sound harsh and was nice too, just a different sound that i wouldn't use on that style of music. Makes me wonder if that Neumann sounds closer to a LCT440?
