Heck you don't even need to combine two champions to imagine a nightmare champ, imagine if galio was released in s11, I suppose his kit would be like this: Q: Same W: Present W but increases galio's movement speed instead of decreasing E: Dash that knocks up champions, if dash misses, he gets another dash (max 2 dashes in total) R: Can be cast anywhere. I consider myself a relatively low skill player, and I tend to like older champions. I have mained, in different moments, Nasus, Garen and Udyr. And when I go against a player that is using a newer champion and knows very well what they are doing, the feeling of helplessness is very bad, but I've found it to be quite rare actually. Maybe I'm just realtively lucky. I usually just fell that with simpler champions there is so much less things to play wrongly. As long as I stack with Nasus, dodge the skillshots while running ate them with Udyr, or control vision well and sit in a bush with Garen, it is possible to have good result with the characters, a so feature creep doesn't bother me too much. Especially, as I said, in a low skill environment.

I agree with this completely. I feel that even if some champions seem super overpowered when you read their abilities, when you actually get in game against them, they usually don't feel so bad. Sure, you will get the occasional game where Akshan happens to always be there to revive people or Sett Jojos his way into your team and never dies, but hey, you also have the games where Tryndamere just won't leave your team alone.

I honestly think that the feature creep would be fine if they spent more time breathing life into old champions too - not just gameplay wise, but aesthetically. One ASU a year is NOT enough. When a whole VGU take that long, they NEED to be putting more resources into updating other champions - it would decrease how many champions they needed to release to maintain hype bc people would be excited about the updates (I know people were/are VIBRATING with excitement over the Ahri and Caitlyn ones). Even two a year would help so much with what they consider to be their necessary champion output.

The issue is not the features added to the game, but riots absolute disregard to champion design for the sake of adding features. They prefer to clump as many new features or combined old features into one champion over actually designing that feels good. Arkshaan is probably the best example we ever have for it. His double-shot passive is completely unrelated to the champion himself. His weaponry has nothing that makes him having a double shot make sense. He just has it. He gets movementspeed for canceling an attack which is also random even if the mechanic is interesting and then there is a three hit passive, which is fine if not would make the double hit passive even more random. And then he has stealth... If I ask you, "What is Arkshaan", you would not be able to answer it, because his revive and ult implie a revenge killer/clean up champion, while his stealth and hookshot implie an first strike assassin and he is also a marksman with free poke and escapes. Look at Sett, his entire kit just clicks mechanicly and thematicly. Aphelios for as much of a cluster fuck as some combinations of weapons are, nothing feels out of place. If Aphelios had the same design philophy as Arkshaan, one of his weapons would give him a dash. Zeri is another example of "What exactly is she?". She has the ability to steal shields and she has 500 range what makes her seem like some kind of duelist type, but then she also has max-health damage and increased damage on missing health which makes her a tank shredder and clean up champion at the same time. Her ult is essentially the pre-rework Aatrox ult which again makes her look like a fighter. Riot often just fails at giving a champion a fitting playstyle or theme just to throw in as many mechanics as possible. And it's not like that only goes for new champions. Vayne is a short-ranged marksman with stealth, dashes and the ability to blow up tanks as fast as squishy like an assassin while also have too much sustain (Because of how well she synergizes with shieldbow) and mobility to fight her head on. She is a simple champion, but riots desire to make some champions all purpose instead of getting them specific jobs to do makes her one ofthe least likes champions in the game.

As a top lane player I have a severe dislike for champs like Nasus. His kit might be outdated, but the fact that I can kill him 3 times in lane, go for a roam, come back a minute later and get my skull bashed in doesn't scream weak champ to me. This isn't even the worst part to me though, that undoubtedly goes to the F you button they call his wither a.k.a. not quite a root: the ability. I get that he gets beaten by dashes, but in return he can stop any character without them dead in their tracks starting from ~20-25 minutes in game. Finally he can still wither champs with these dashes for up to 95% during 5 seconds, making it almost twice as long as a morgana (!) binding. With any type of movement speed, be that ghost or deadmans, or any type of dash, be that flash or anything else, he has absolutely zero issue forcing any enemy out of a fight, either by killing them or forcing them to dash over a wall. For example, a Zeri that dashes over the biggest wall nearby won't be able to rejoin the fight for 4 seconds if she is slowed by 80%. I get that new characters have more (complex) features, but anyone saying this makes older characters unviable is grossly overexaggerating. Sure some older characters are unviable, things like Skarner (this is pre VGU) or A-sol, but new champs aren't immune to this either, especially if they don't bring a new identity to the table, picture something like Rell. New characters aren't immune to this unviability, Riot just tries really hard to release healthy champions that can last for another few years, and to do that they can't be "simple" champions like Nasus or old Sion, because if they are they either make new characters unviable by being better versions of them, or are worthless releases because a champion that does their job better already exists.

I think the reference to Smash Bros mechanics progression was a great example. Riot has arguably pushed what is possible in League to its limits and yet they need to keep trying to explore new things in order to try to keep league fresh. There isnt going to be a League 2 which introduces completely new mechanics for old characters to try and new characters to utilize, because that would invalidate all the time and money that Riots current playerbase has put into it. But even saying that, right now League is almost unrecognizable than the version of it when I first played: Dragon buffs, champion reworks, rift herald, hell the map. Its almost a new game already

I think the biggest problem with feature creep that I'm kinda surprised you didn't mention is that it makes the game much more hostile to new players and returning players. I'm one of the people who got sucked back in from Arcane after quitting for 5 years and hooooly shit, all the new champions and their enormous complexity was such a hill to get over. I can only imagine trying to introduce new people to the game altogether. I'm overall very glad that the game has so much more variety and possibilities than it did before. But I feel like that could be much better achieved by releasing champions that are relatively simple but focused around a central mechanic or "gimmick" as some people would say. But so many of the new champions feel completely overwhelming like almost every ability is a brand new concept. Most of which are not at all intuitive.

Two things make feature creep perfectly fine in my opinion. 1) just because they’re overloaded doesn’t mean people are automatically good with them. They still have to be used in the right hands. 2) as long as they keep the old champions slightly relevant (ahri mini rework, teemo buff) then you can still keep the people who are attached/have lots of experience with the old champs without them feeling too far behind. As an FGC dude and a former league player I gotta say it's more frustrating to deal with in league because it doesn't just change a few things, it changes everything every five minutes. Fighters change like "Tere's air dodging/pushblock/parry's/no chip kills/counterbreakers now etc" but most of the basics are the same so a little lab time to learn what to do in the matchups and once your yomi was on point you were solid and could adapt or it was too much and didn't stick with it. League changes are more like playing mugen in a different language, they took away purchasable wards and like 80% of defensive options to make it more twitchy and Adderall addicted while making you have to rely on dingbats to ward, decided "everything needs to be skillshots" tanks are toxic because assassins don't feel strong when peel actually works, all the "sUpPoRt iSnT FuN" "fixes" and that's just the game itself, I wish there was a better way to put it but Riot is a sellout shill that's guilty of predatory practices and criminal behavior as an employer. I don't believe for a second whatever schmuck stuck coding the asshair physics for the newest combination of old ideas and deleted items effects rolled into an "innovating never before seen champion that's definitely not overloaded" thinks it's that great either.

Riot don't need to just make better versions of older champions the game to keep it going and riot themselves have proven so. Bard, Taliyah, Aurelion Sol, Illaoi and Braum are prime examples of that. They can even take an overloaded champion, trim the excesses and the champion will be fine. I will use Camille as an example, not because she is the worst offender, not even close. But I feel like she is the easiest to understand. Passive - Camille's next attack grants her a shield based on her target's main type of damage. Q - Two auto attack resets, the second deals true damage if timed correctly. W - A cone that deals damage. If the sweet spot connects, it also slows. E - Long range dash that stuns a single target on-hit, but needs terrain to use. R - Camille jumps to her target and creates a zone which they cannot escape. When you look at a champion with this set of abilities, I guess we can all agree that this is a powerful kit. But what if I tell you that's not all? Camille's Q also gives her a ton of movement speed. Camille's W also heals her and has %health damage. Camille's E also gives her attack speed. Camille's R also makes her untargetable, also knocks all enemy champions away and also gives her %health damage on-hit. Now I ask, is all that stuff crammed into her kit really necessary? Of course, if all of a sudden Riot decided to pull the trigger and remove all of it, she'd become the worst champion in the game, but she can be compensated elsewhere and if she happen to be released without all of these, those things wouldn't be missed. Jarvan don't become untargetable when he ults, just to give an example. Another example: Kayn's E. Ignoring collision with terrain, by itself is a strong ability. It don't need to heal or to give movement speed to be a good ability. Shaco's Q, though a different ability, has, to some extent, similar applications, yet he don't get free movement speed from it. The healing could come turning into Rhaast and the movement speed into Shadow Assassin. Sure, if you take it from the perspective of the next patch, that'll feel like a huge nerf, but again, that's not the point. I am talking that, by itself, walking over walls is a very strong thing to have and such ability don't need extra effects to be good. My hyphotesis is that the idea of a failed champion terrifies Riot so much that they aren't willing to take the risk of releasing a champion with obvious weakness. "We are releasing a jungler that walk over walls" but somewhere sometime someoen mentioned "yeah, but he has no sustain" and then rather than sacrifice a basic feature for an unique gimmick, they release the champion with the unique gimmick that's only the champion's in addition to all the basic tools. As such, well rounded champions with all the basic tools but no gimmicks or a champion with a gimmick but with gabs on their basic toolset just fall behind. I don't blame Riot for wanting their new champions to suceed but, in my opinion, they are failing to realize that having flaws may not be good for the champion, but its good for the game long term.

I played since the end of season 4, in comparison I'm a pretty old and experienced player, but when I was around there were people who were playing since season 1 telling me that I had it good. I mean old Fiora, she was so much fun. The way she would be able to outplay by turning the fight around completely, made me so happy. I know the jokes, that she was a master Yi reskin, that she was bad, and even that she had no place in The Meta. But I had a lot of fun playing with her, and I don't know how many times I've always thought: "I wonder how we could change this, to make it more like the original?" I wished riot would take more time to lessen the amount of drastic change they placed into these champions. Mind you they need a new breath of Life, but not one that's so insanely different that it changes the game forever. I just wished there was a way to go back to the old days, when azir attack speed scaled off of cooldown reduction, when old Fiora could rule the top Lane, where agro adcs were actually good, and we're not every single person in this Rift had a dash. If riot did something like classic wow, they would make a killing. If only though, right?

I’m so glad that you’re willing to discuss the issue beyond blaming rito for stupidity. The older the game gets, and the more champions are released, the harder it is to make a new and innovative champion without adding another level of complexity. The fact that they still manage to do so while keeping the viable champion roster not just 2 champions is good enough for me.

As someone who's worked on game design and visual effects, here's the truth of the matter: Making simple characters is hard. Like, no, really. To make a character simple to understand, play and experience is extremely difficult to make enjoyable, because they always run a very fine like of 'simple and boring' or 'simple and fun'. This doesn't just go for how the character behaves in game, but the same for their lore, their personalities, their voice, etc. It's really, really hard. Lol.

i like how people say champs gotta have new and crazy kits so people will like them and keep the game fresh when the champ i enjoyed most by far in years of releases is Vex. She literally is like one of the simplest champs, 2 skill shot spells, a shield that hurts enemies in melee-ish range, and a skill shot ult that dashes you to people if you so choose, with a passive that it literally Annie's except its a fear instead of stun No page long descriptions on how the spells work, no broken mechanics or taking 4 skills from other champs and combining them into one, just a simple champ whos only as powerful as your ability to land skill shots is. By far the best/most balanced champ riot has put out in years and it required none of this power creep bullshit that people say has to be there or the champ will be useless/unlikable. Plus she's a little emo yordel and thats just cute.
@Fut_re
@Fut_re 2 жыл бұрын
Nah man, I gotta disagree with Vex being well-balanced. Although her numbers are on the lower spectrum, so her harass and extended damage isn’t amazing per-say, it’s the fact that her entire kit could be dumped within 0.5s since all of her abilities have either a relatively wide hitbox (Q + W), can be chained (fear chains into E), or used as an engage (R), while they all have almost no casting time. It’s like you get hit by R and in a second Vex grey-screens you. I honestly still think even now that it’s pretty wonky that this proposed anti-dash mage has one of the longest-range dashes of them all and can play like what she counters because of it. She is really simple, but simple doesn’t correlate directly to balance. Simpler is easier to balance, but not balanced inherently. There’s also the fact that with how her kit’s designed now nerfing her will just make her fall off pretty hard if it’s not a placebo nerf since again, she can dump her entire kit in less than a second but if it doesn’t kill then it feels worthless and even if I don’t like the champion I can understand how much of a feels-bad moment that is. Honestly if they just tweaked her R so that you can’t recast it on a takedown Id be happy with just that, because now she isn’t basically doing the same thing as everyone says is a bad thing: dashing a bunch of times.

It's interesting because feature creep and power creep are, to some extent, inevitable. However, some things currently have been bothering me a bit: 1) Riot seems to have almost entirely abandoned some ideas on "player satisfaction x player frustration" 2) Overtly relied on certain patterns (particularly skill resets) in order to create functional gameplay. As you mentioned, it's interesting because it's kind of a "pioneer study", since even League's elder brother (DotA) is so radically different that it is hard to find parallels between the courses of the two games over time. But I do think that Riot needs a fresher look into how they design, and rework, their champions. Lack of novelty isn't the only way a game can get stale: if every new content is heading towards a single direction (complex kits that rely on a strong knowledge of fundamentals and mechanics), the game can still get stale by gatekeeping the casual player and newer audiences.

Like in lore not all are demigods, magical entities and etc., humans have tendency to die. And it would be like "oh no, Garen was actually killed by Darius", and Garen is deleted from the game *forever* . Yet in lore they could write that "Garen's example has inspired a lot of men, and here we have new heroes!". Or "Garen and Katarina at last got busy and got a son/daughter, who is now a skillful trained fighter", I think you got the point.

They did this in 2018 and shit was rough. Aatrox and Swain's reworks are still critiqued for being way too different from their old selves while Akali and Irelia's are still hated for how broken they're. The new champs that came out that year are either really unpopular (Neeko) or hated for being "broken" (Kai'Sa and Pyke). Only Nunu & Willump were widely considered as successful reworks that weren't super broken or unfaithful to their old selves by the community but even then they aren't super popular either.

I feel like the problem with things such as Renata's R, Akshan's revival mechanic, or Viego possessing enemies is not that they'd be inherently OP but that they're beyond the realm of balancing. So if we look at the way riot designed early champions versus now, I see three distinct design philosophies. Early: simple champions whose complexity comes from how their whole kit works together. Leading to more unique play styles in some cases: think trynd, singed, Jax, alistar and tf. Very simple yet they feel very unique. Then a second wave, around the time that a meta had formed beginning with the release of khazix, defined by their one unique mechanic that defines a lot of their play style. And now the new era, I.e. increased complexity of all mechanics.

There are only a few champions I actually have an issue with. Sylas ult stealing, Viego punishing you for dying (something near inevitable) and Akshan's random mass resurrect. And the more then 1 champions they absolutely massacred by reworking them: Yorick, Mordekaiser. And all the unresolved problems that come with champion interaction. There's a lot riot can do to make unique new characters, but you can just have a dash on a champion if the rest of the kit is different enough. Hecc, it's extremely sad to see that someone that makes Sett different from most other new releases is that he doesn't have a dash. I take issue, not with the fact that champions get to do unique things but there's like 3 different forms of true stealth in the game now, Veigars cage stops most dashes dead in their tracks, but not all. If every champion is unique in the way their abilities interacts with all other champions and there's no consistency, it really foes just feel like riot is forcing cool ideas unto champions (like morde R) and then leaving it in the dust when it's not a success. Vex, Sett and Rell are extremely cool yet beyond a single gimmick in their kits aren't that gamebreaking at all. Meanwhile Akshan exists. It's not like riot does what it does because it must. They have many cool ideas and frequently seem to go overboard with it. Just hope that they won't have to nerve Zeri into the ground cause the difference between top level and bottom level Zeri is too big. Like other champions that basically aren't allowed to be good because they'll dominate masters meta or whatever. No one will ever read this lol.

I think what Skooch said about a lot of people being upset about 200 years champions because they've already become attached to older designs is very true. I got into league in season 8 at the time of the Irelia rework. I started basically one tricking her because A. cool champ with a bunch of blades and dashes and nice animations and B. ooga booga even though this is a new game to me and every champ might as well be brand new, I still wanna play the new character. Since then, I've seen Gwen come out with a Xin ult on a basic ability, Samira come out as an adc with a windwall, Viego come out with the ability to possess every other champion in the game, etc., and have basically just shrugged and gone "all right, pretty cool I guess" because one of my first experiences with the game and the champ I was most attached to is one of the most infamously 200 years designs out there.

They could easily solve this problem - and I know this has been said a million times already - if they stopped releasing new champs for a while and updated the older ones. Not only would they not have to struggle with coming up with an entirely new champ with a new mechanic and a 14th type of dash, but also they could bring the outdated champs back to the game. What they are doing rn is just macking the void between older and newer champs bigger and bigger instead of bringing them closer together in terms of balance, intricacy etc.

I very much enjoy the ever-changing nature of new champions, reworks, and other alterations like dragons and item updates that Riot has added over the years. Because, what most people seem to forget is that older champs become not outclassed completely, but find themselves in new and interesting positions as the meta changes around them. Maybe it's because I don't have a real main per say, I have a toolbox of different champions that have infrequent but hilarious use-cases as time goes on. Newer champions like Zeri and Renata come out like crowbars. Good all-around tools with multiple applications that provide enough leverage to get the job done. However, these additions force older champions to innovate and become more specific tools, like an awl. Sure, generally they aren't useful, but when you find the exact job to which they are suited, they become unstoppable and endlessly useful. For example: Did the enemy team lock in, say, Renata Zeri bot to capitalize on the shield buffs and attack speed steroids? No problem! Lock in Ziggs Xerath in response and make them actually useless since they have no way to oppose that many long-range abilities that deal that much damage. Build double Shadowflame on top of that and the whole lane becomes a liability that the enemy team has to collectively deal with, allowing your team to seize advantage elsewhere.

Honestly, It doesn't feel bad that all the champions they are releasing have feature-creeped designs. I enjoy the complex nature of some of the kits. I just hat how much mobility champs are guaranteed in their kits, from wall hops to dashes and blinks, and so on. Many old champions definitely feel weak due to their inability to keep up, and incorporating too much mobility into items will just make new champions even more difficult to deal with. Putting some extra mobility into older champion's kits through mini-reworks seems like the best way to deal with the problem. Stat adjustments would obviously need to happen (Imagine current Tryndamere with a dash that resets like Ahri's ult), but doing so would be healthier for the direction they are taking the game.

The thing I personally think hurt leagues "play creative" mentality the most was the mythic forge item change, specifically the idea of mythics. Im not saying that all items that got added are bad (though mandatte can go into a cave to rot away) but this whole idea of being forced to build a specific kind of item every game can feel very crippling since anyone besides Cassiopeia only has 4 items slots to fill with varible things since one is reserved for the mythic and the second one is for boots. Like yes, you can technically buy a different mythic every game, but you are still forced to buy a mythic every game, which more often than not you are forced to rush first, which takes a lot of the creative item building away.

i'm a yugioh player, and i could tell you from first hand experience; feature creep is fine so long as you make sure to buff the old stuff every so often to compensate. there's a reason people may still play blue eyes white dragon decks and nobody runs jinzo decks. one of them is a massively outdated card that got so much life support injected into the deck over the years that the one card has more separate printings than entire archetypes have cards in total, and the other was a card so dominant that it shaped the meta for years and invalidated a third of the game, but got such little of value from its support that newer players may not know it even exists.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, it's good that Riot is innovating their game and adding cool new features and characters. However, that needs to be balanced with proper reworks in order to keep the old characters viable and fun. I think smash Brothers is a perfect example of a game that does it pretty well. There's definitely some DLC bullshit, but they've managed to maintain a balance between the power of new characters and old characters. A big part of that is that they were not afraid to monitor and balance the game all throughout it's development (spanning years). Right clearly has many more aspects to balance than Smash, and overall I think they've done a solid job, but they've definitely got to keep it up if they want to allow these dated characters to feel they belong in their game.

Skooch: Ragging on Wind Drake only giving movement speed. Also Skooch: Talking about these mythics that legit give movement and some extra little bit of mobility to old champs that makes them more fun. HHMMMmmmmmmmm

@Guilherme Garcia Was stated in jest, I am very aware of the difference. Wind Drake is indeed just a load of hot air as it is.

On one hand, I do adore some of the new champions, Zeri is my shit. My issue is that with featurecreep comes powercreep. I genuinely wish they would tone down damage across the game, not by much but please god, let my tank survive more than like 3 seconds. Also, while I realize the irony of me liking Zeri, I wish their were less dashes, but there can't be because no dash as anything other than a support or jung now adays is basically killing the character before it's out.

The problem is that riot consistently fails to add proper counterplay to skills and it becomes way more pronounced on the 200 years champions because of the sheer volume of options they have. Introduce one gimmick at a time and it's fine, but add 6 of them and you get Akshan.

I think most players want a few good skins for existing champs that they enjoy. New champs are probably more profitable at some point for enfranchised players. It might be a reason why updates to old champs aren't happening more often.

There is a simple yet elegant solution to all of these problems that should have been implemented 10 champion ago: stop releasing new champions. Instead they could focus on adding more item in order to diversify gameplay, new modes and events.

New items? But don't you know, they overhauled the entire shop in season 11 and even added mythics to the game ! What do you mean it was a big failure and builds are just as restrictive if not more than before? That couldn't be the case right? Right?

Feature Creep is inevitable when it comes to long running games and game series as you said. That in mind, is why older champs get reworked, which still upsets a lot of people. IMO, League could benefit from the WoW Classic Server treatment, where each season is added, and then you can play in whatever season, but know the game won't get any better, or the DOTA treatment, and make a completely 2nd game altogether. I fear both solutions would result in what happened to Battlerite, splitting the community into different seasons, or different games, and the main game dying out because of it, but I could be wrong, afterall as many people play WoW classic, most still come back to see the new xpac, but that would mean the new season would need very frequent updates and added content, which would likely turn the current season into a hot mess of half baked ideas thrown in just for the sake of something new, we can balance it later.

Feature Creep gives me so much fucking anxiety. No matter what game we’re talking about. One of my main existential crisis levels of anxieties are the concept of finite creativity. At what point does it become impossible to come up with new things? Which is why I’m one of those people who support things like remakes/reworks and such. We got the good shit once, now give it back to us and make it look all snazzy. Why not. If it ain’t broke… I think Riot should slow down on coming up with entirely new things for a bit and work ok what they got and make it awesome and up to date. The only thing at the moment I’m very excited for in terms of Riot/League is the void event, the slim potential of a Zilean VGU (which are both related to already existing stuff that they’re bringing back up into the spotlight) and then that really really odd picasso painting like hand swirly thing that was a super early teaser for a new botlaner because what in all of abstract art and insanity is that?!?

Can't agree. It is possible for Riot to release something new without overloading. Let's take Akshan for example. His rope is complitely new thing for League, but instead of focusing on that Riot added him revive, shields, 3 auto passive, invisibility. Wich was not nessesary at all for him to be something new and interesting - he already had new mechanics. Renata has a unique concept of friendly fire, but they gave her stupid revive on w. And etc etc etc. So, sorry, I think your main point is... off point kind of :)

I don't even mind the revive so much as it at least fits her theme or long CD abilities that need good timing. I am more bothered by Zeri definitly not needing Max-Health Damage, 500% bonus damage towards low health enemies and an on-attack slow. She is a hyper mobile-split damage ranged carry, what would she need all of that for? What does Arkshaan, whose new mechanics make him out to be a revenge killer, need a mechanic like stealth that gives him the first strike intiative? What is his double-shot really for? Why the shieled?
