Having had 5 Elkhounds and 2 foster Elkies. I can honestly say their intelligence is in the top 5 of all dogs. BUT, you have to have the intelligence to work with this breed or they will run circles around you. Training an Elkie puppy is the best as they are usually eager to please. After they hit 2 yrs old or so, and get their confidence and independence your life gets much harder in the training aspect. With tis said there is no other breed I would share my home with. They are smart dogs. Ours figured out how to open a door latch with his paw as a puppy. We theorized that he would read the newspaper when we were out of the house.

Of course Norwegian Elkhounds are trainable! You have to get on the same wave length with them. They're extremely bright and want to learn new things all the time. Rewards work better than punishments. Lavish them with praise and keep them busy with active jobs and they're the happiest dogs on the planet. Super affectionate, too. My very favorite breed.

I have had 7 elkhounds over the years. They are hands down the smartest and most fun companion! They protect their territory, are trustworthy in your home once they figure it out, energetic but happy being home with your family, playful. I think what people need to know about having an elkhound. Is they a part of your family. They need to be treated like a valued member of the family. You mentioned them being independent, and they really are. When raising an elkhound it’s quid pro quo ! Love your vids!

I love my Elkhound, "Dozer" but he was broken when we got him. We rescued him from an Amish breeder at 6mos old. Would have like to get him at 6-8 weeks for socialization. He was a runt and was abused and last one left. When asked, the Amish man said take him now or he won't be here tomorrow. I know Amish and I know they were going to kill him as he was not profitable and Amish don't keep valueless things around. To this day he dislikes men with long beards. We gave them 100$ and headed down the road with trembling terrified puppy in the back of our jeep. He is almost 2.5 years old now but lacks confidence and is scared of every new experience. I want to take him swimming. We can't take him to a dog park because he will attack anything and will not stop. He is like a honey badger on speed. He has taken down perceived threats that were 4 to 5 times his own size and sent them other dogs packing. He is no pushover but we do believe he will be broken for life. He has accepted us and our other dogs as pack mates but he is very cautious of strangers and lets them know it. I do hope he opens up a bit more in the future. There is a whole world out there for him, but only if he isn't a lunatic. EDIT - He spent his early months in a dark horse stall and never really experienced the out doors. I usually wouldn't have paid money but the man said 100$ or no deal. Knowing what would happen I caved. So glad I did. Doser is pure personality! :)

You got a great deal, abs and saved his life!! We have had Elkhounds since 1988. We absolutely love them!!! They're full of character, life and love ❤️. Keep up the great work as much as possible and enjoy him.

This breaks my heart. I love Elkhounds, and I have had several. They are truly the best dogs on the planet, in my opinion. Only responsible people should be allowed to breed Elkhounds. These dogs are a priceless treasure.
