You're right on target. When I started flying privately, survival situations was a consideration. There are scenarios you can read about where you end up with only what's on your person. Ironically, a bracelet was right out because I don't want to wear something that can become a hand trap. My solution was a Paracord belt (Slatts rescue belt) -- 76' of Paracord in a "one pull" disassembly. And, more importantly, I also collected survival knowledge and practice. 20 years later and it's been the best belt I've ever had (I'm still wearing it).

So I was at a music rehearsal and needed to set the mic in a mic stand, but the mic holder was too small for the larger cordless handheld. What did I do? took off my quick release bracelet, unraveled it, and used constrictor knots to secure the mic to the mic stand. It doesn't have to be a survival situation for it to be useful. I use a simple daisy chain bracelet design so I won't have to worry about undoing a complex design (and feel bad about it) and so I can easily tie it back into a bracelet when I'm done with the cord. This way it can be used without regret for many every day uses.

@@arottedfruit Well, it depends on a bracelet and tightness. I find trilobite and fast untying bracelet best of obvious reason - they are accessible on emergency. You can use knife to unravel cord and then get amount of rope you need. Then just use some tight knot like constrictor or canadian jam. However i would not recommend using paracord as tourniquet, because it can severely damage nerves, but if you don't have one its probably one of the best choices.

Appreciate the candidness of this video. Been watching you for years. I have become rather good myself. I've had a few people ask me about survivalist aspect of paracording. I always steer them away. As cool as I think the hobby is. These things are fashion, eye candy, and not much else. Especially considering that most bracelets are spliced together to get all color effects were going for. Which means most of the time most bracelets only have 6-8 feet of solid cord before being spliced, and is most likely of dubious structural integrity. Either way, thanks a bunch, keep up the good work.

paracord bracelets … don't hold enough cordage to be a primary survival tool. I've seen bracelets with mini ferro rods, a compass, a whistle, one of the inner cord strands designed to easily catch fire, and a short stitching needle with a big eye that an inner strand of the cord could be used with. That's not gonna make survival happen in the wilderness, but it might replace laces, could get a small fire going if you needed it, repair a backpack strap, orient you on a cloudy day in a city (or serve in a pinch if something happens to your proper compass), and give you a whistle if you haven't otherwise got one for some silly reason. (Always carry a whistle!) That isn't going to make the difference between survival and not in the wilderness, but it could sure be handy in a pinch otherwise on an ordinary day, especially if the bracelet is one you made and could remake pretty easily.

Agreed. It's not something you can slap on your wrist and then think that you're good to go. Might even give you a false sense of security, but like you said, in a pinch, it's definitely better than nothing. Always best to actually be prepared with the proper equipment and safety measures.

The best tool for any situation is the one inside your skull. I've always thought the difference between a prepper, and a survivalist is; preppers will typically either buy gear in the hopes that they never have to use it, or just want to look cool. They horde equipment they know very little about, and never test any of it. If they do train, it's very basic backyard stuff they can do with no real threat. Survivalists buy gear to use, and get acquainted with before folding it into their permanent tool chest because some things are either easier, or more cost effective to buy. They tend to use their gear daily because that's what's keeping them alive. A survivalist doesn't need a camp knife to baton wood with because he'll have an axe for that job. It's really easy to get sucked into the prepper trend because of KZbin. Most people just want to own cool gear, and that's all well, and good, but as MainePrepper once said; (paraphrased) "Without proper training, all you're doing is hoarding gear for someone else to steal."

As someone who used less than 3ft. of 550 to secure the passenger door of an up armored Humvee, no, it's absolutely not useless. In fact, this stuff was engineered specifically for parachutes.

In response to your comment about the cobra knot bracelet not being the best option for emergency/survival due to it not holding a lot of cord + requiring a lot effort to take apart - I do agree, but like you said, the whole idea is that it would be a LAST resort. If you had the foresight to carry a quick-release bracelet with more cordage, then you'd probably be going into some kind of survival situation KNOWINGLY, and hence would also probably already be carrying a whole supply on you anyway. At the end of the day, having SOMETHING on you beats nothing at all. And the cobra knot bracelet looks much nicer to wear day-to-day than a super thick/wide bracelet which could potentially be more practical.

I usually keep a fair amount of rope, paracord, straps and bungies in my trunk. At one point I had all that and duct tape and electrical tape. I thought about it and if someone looked at all of that the wrong way, it would look terrible for me. Lol

Survival is not a zero sum game. Any little bit of more gear you can have increases your chances of survival or comfort in your make shift camp. That being said, I myself moved from quick deploy bracelet to a mad max style cobra for aesthetics, because let's be real, how often I actually need to quickly deploy that bracelet?

okay but a more realistic use for the modern society, is when you're travelling. so when you check in your luggage, you can always clip your paracord bracelet into the luggage handle. Its a unique way to make sure your luggage doesn't get lost. though I would recommend a more complex weave since if you do basic weaves especially cobra weaves, there's a high chance people got a similar one through a shop.

To secure a box to a trolley I have already found it useful. U can save money buy not buying plastic bags. Simply go in to a store and grab a cardboard box. Stuff your groceries in the box and put it on the trolley. Secure it wif your paracord and drag it home. As you get older and want to save your shoulders. Save the environment!

It can come in handy if, for example, you rescue a dog on the side of the road and do not have a leash. I have 2 collars and a leash stashed in my truck, just in case, but what if you're riding with someone else? Maybe your belt broke and you need to hold your pants up so you can go buy another one. Just some ideas.

I wear a paracord bracelet all the time one day the passenger door on my car would not close as the closer was stuck in the open position so I wondered the paracord bracelet tied it around the handle inside the door then around the passenger seat job done

Got rear-ended use my Paracord tie my exhaust up. Paracird bracelets due have some value but it is limited due to the small length they contain. Used frugally and wisely 6 or 8 feet of cord could prove useful in certain situations and is better than nothing. They are better served as accessories or fashion statements.

Even just having replacement shoe laces can be handy. I only have a quick-deploy lanyard that I made with the intent of having paracord on me (Beltloop to house keys in pocket...great way to not drop your keys too). It is almost 3stories of survivor-cord. If I am on top of a typical building/factory roof and have no other way down, I could use it to get down in an emergency. I never realisticly expect to use it as such, but I have had MANY moments where my EDC has been a "lifesaver" in the moment of need.

QUESTION: Hoping someone can help me, i see a lot of paracord bracelets and depending on the style and knots involved usually it ends up being 1.5 to 2m length of cord per color. But what size bracelet is that??? My reason for asking is I have a very boney wide wrist and with like 13in I think it is loosely I would need to add more paracord but I cant do the conversion if i dont know the standard size to compare it to.
