sven van de wardt same I race mini sprints and people that say it isn’t a sport annoys me because they have to be in top condition ex: Jimmie Johnson’s runs marathons and is in really good shape and he *STILL* gets worn out when the track temperature is over 160 or something it justshows how much of a toll it takes on your body and the g forces are insane as well

I hate how a whole bunch of Machos always think, "STRENGTH HURR DURR". Strength makes a sport! There are a lot of sports that have a larger emphasis on coordination, reaction, reading, and other physical/mental skills that are just as demanding as strength. Driving, Riding Motorcycles, Skateboarding, Marksmanship, and whatnot never get the credit they deserve.

Even just Karting is a feat in itself, I tried it once, was going at a snails pace and felt like I was going through an earthquake. I could only imagine what Nascar drivers (With its intense High Speed), F1 drivers (Intense G Force and is very demanding mentally and physically), MotoGP drivers (same as F1 and nascar but cut out the G Force) and more feel. Sports don't need to be just about physical capabilities, if that were true then people wouldn't be calling Chess a sport

@fetB
@fetB 9 жыл бұрын
***** And the point the OP makes, is that it does involve a lot more than just sitting in the car. Saying being in shape is needed is twisting it a bit to make it sound like it's a bonus. Theres a lot of physical stress going on, while a high amount of concentration and coordination, is required. However, actually, if you do it on teh regular and even practice for it, then yes, by definition, anything can be a sport. How do you define sport then?
@fetB
@fetB 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, i'm aware, and thats perfectly correct, cause Sport is defined not solely by the level of physical abilities, but like i said, the frame and the amount of expertise that is needed. You're free to say that you don't like certain sports, or that some are more professional than others, but completely denying the fact that something is one, is kinda borderline delusional (no offense). In the example of a racecar drivers, just goes to to show, you dont know anything about it. The simple fact that one has to practice for years to be even competitive, says enough about it, and all this put in a frame of competition, is most definitely a sport. Mind you, they don't stay in shape just to be light. The complete weight is predetermined and sometimes drivers even get weight on board to reach that requirement. They have to be fit cause that's a factor that decides who wins or does not. One of the Pioneers, if you will, was Michael Schumacher. He set the bar with his fitness which allowed him to withstand teh G forces and keep up the precision and concentration during a 2h F1 race, that was required every single lap; quite like the great Michael Jordan, actually.

+drake you're a massive idiot these guys don't need to be in shape because they want to be light they need to be in shape so as to not be killed by simply driving the cars for example one of the sprint cars in nascar creates about 2 g's of accelerative pressure on the chest and spine and neck, now for a normal lard ass like you that would crush/snap your bones in said region, next in formula one and indycar while going around a hairpin bend a driver can experience up to 6 g's of lateral force (I believe the record is at 8) if these guys weren't in great physical condition their bodies would literally be turned into paste after the first corner. And finally in nascar their is no such thing as power steering so trying to get one of those cars to hit those massive bends properly requires so much physical strength, the arms of a regular joe like you would be torn and useless yet these guys walk out of those races with their arms still perfectly working. Not to mention that a sprint cup car will spin the second it's touched by another one, trying to hold it by steering requires even more force and I put and if you don't succeed well you may be the victim of between 6 to 9 g's while hitting the wall. And for those who think those numbers mean jack I'd like to say that during blast off an astronaut will hit 3 to 4 g's while in re entry the astronaut will hit 5 to 6 g's

To anyone who hasn't driven a road course or even an oval in these types of cars, the force needed to even turn the wheel is insane. It like holding two 20 pound weights in your hand trying to turn the wheel. You really feel the burn. Try doing that for 3+ hours, while experiencing high G-forces, being strapped into a seat with a fire suit when the car temp is greater than 125 degrees, all while driving really close concentrating because your life depends on it. If race car drivers aren't considered athletes, I honesty don't know who is.

Lol Donovan McNabb would probably shit his pants going through Eau Rouge or breaking at the first chicane in Monza. Putting your body through constant stress for 2 hours is a lot fucking different than being tired from running a few yards. I played ice hockey for 10 years, arguably one of the more demanding sports, and I now race. I will tell you first hand racing is not only just as physically demanding, but MUCH more mentally demanding as well. Your mind can wander during a hockey game and it would not affect you at all. Wander your mind in a racing car and you will probably end up dead.

LilWhyteIverson You have to be one of the dumbest people I've ever come across on the internet. There's a bit of a difference in fitness between an amateur super dirt racer and a professional level Indy car driver. In your sport you wouldn't experience much G force or have to do long races either and your racing class certainly wouldn't be at the level of skill where high physical and mental fitness would play a part like it does at the professional level. I'd like to see how tired you'd get after a 2 hour race in an open wheel car with slicks. By the sound of it you don't really know how to drive either , the idiots never make it far in motorsport.

Randy Marsh Because its on dirt you really don't get the high g forces and shocks unless you crash and you most probably won't crack 200 mph, If you want a real challenge, go to a tarmac circuit, rent a car with race slicks on it and be consitent for 2-3 hours, Not saying dirt racing is easy, but you should try out the other options before telling anything about them

Formula 1 has an image problem, I was asking my friend do you watch F1 and she was like what is so special about a sport where men race robots to a finish line. What is the cornerstone of an sport is the athletes, tennis rackets generate more power now but we don't say rackets win matches, golf clubs can drive the ball farther now but golfers win championships, shoes are more comfortable now but Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive not his shoes. The problem with F1 with its promotion of cars being super machines people wonder what exactly do the drivers do, yes it must be true that drivers are under a lot of physical and mental stress, but if people don't see that they don't believe it. Why watch a sport where a human irrelevant and a machine does the winning for you. F1 is the most technical sport in the world, you have to be very knowledgeable about cars to even understand the technical aspects of this sport. If a casual person is flicking through the TV and comes across a F1 race, they just see it as a car race where someone needs to get to the finish line first, but if they already hold this belief that F1 is just a game where cars are doing all the work and a man is just guiding it to its finish line then what is so interesting change channel.

Being both an avid racing fan and a long distance track and Cross Country runner, I do agree that racing drivers are in fact athletes. Racers have to stand up to 4 hours of driving, with HRs at 180 and BPM at roughly 30+. That is equivalent to a marathon runner. And although it may look easy, it's not. In stock cars, temperatures can be in access of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. That is intense heat coming through the heat shield and into the cockpit. As often as I do have heart rates and BPMs like this, I only do it on average about 20 minutes in a 5K. Racing, in my eyes, is in fact a sport. I mean, I know McNabb played football, but compared to crashes in a racing car, football hits are not as nearly ferocious as many drivers experience in crashes.

Take a hot day (90f+),put on 3 layers of winter clothing(2 ski masks and a wool cap) Roll just 2 front windows down about 2 inches(this simulates the amount of air the aero package lets into the car). Turn the heater on full hot and take a 3 hour trip.

Of course race drivers are athletes in their own right, not just mentally but physically too. Especially endurance drivers who race continually for 4 hours with only a few pit stops in between and their heart rate is constantly at 180. Plus the mental capacity. You have to go against your mind in these things. Normal car you'd brake about 150-200m but in a race car you have to go against what your mind is telling you and brake less than 100m before the corner, going from 200mph to 70mph. Cockpit temps can reach 60C and of course the G forces which practically tear you apart. Us the bumpiness of the track which can turn your pelvis into dust. Race drivers dont get enough credit for what they do. They do so many other sports like cycling, swimming and running and of course gym whenever they have free time just to be fit

Just to remind everyone who has commented on this video, this is just the first test of Rising Star Racing's #ConnectedDriver program. The overlay of Josef's heart rate and respiratory rate were just the very basics and the first test of the technology used to record these biometrics. This is about as basic as the video will get with the data we can record off Josef. Stayed tuned for more videos like this - more videos that go to show just how physically and mentally fit of an athlete you need to be in order to drive a race car at this level. Once we work in other real-time biometrics such as blood pressure, skin temperature, G-forces and many other parameters, it will paint a much clearer picture. I believe showing fans the heavy G loads the drivers body endures for 2+ consecutive hours (3-4G's under braking and corning), while driving at 200+ MPH, with a heart rate of 190 beats per minute, 35+ breaths per minute, as well as a couple dozen cars inches away from you, forcing you to make split second decisions - well, that will truly show someone like Josef's athleticism. Thanks for all of the comments so far. We enjoy each and every one of them and keep them coming.

i understand what you mean, but as a racing driver i can tell you that it is a "personal" thing..for ME for example, monaco isnt stressfull at all, because since i am a rally driver, driving fast in tight places is what i am used to..but then this track is very scary, specially with that kind of race car in the video..he is cutting blind corners there, cornering over crests and "hills" at insane speeds...some might agree with you, but IMO monaco is fairly easy because even tho the track is very tight, the track is also very visible, so hitting the correct line isnt that hard..but the track on the video you dont always see the lines, and you def going way faster then in monaco (with same/similar cars, of course)...and yes, i know what i am saying because i have driven monaco..

looks like many of you, along with mcnabb, need to go pick up a dictionary and read the definition of "athlete". let me help you out, straight from merriam-webster: "[an athlete is]a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina. lets break it down: are drivers skilled? yes is racing an exercise, sport, or game? yes does it require physical strength, agility, or stamina? yes for those of you who have never taken your prius to your local track, sustaining the physical forces that drivers have exerted on them for 3 or more hours is more muscle strain then most of these footballers ever see. 3 or 4 Gs in braking and cornering, that's like having a 40 pound bowling ball of a head. for over 3 hours. very few GT class or higher have power steering, have you ever tried to turn a ford around with no power steering? 3+hours of that. and training. footballers have what, a 7 week training camp, followed by a 13 week season? (regular season, not including playoffs). most professional drivers train and refine their skills with their team everyday, for 10 months out of the year. not including the same sponsorship responsibilities that footballers have, meeting with shareholders, press releases, autograph signing parties... and lastly, there are videos here, on youtube, of driver fitness programs (from ferrari, mclaren, nascar, mercedes, porsche, many others) showing just how much *physical* exercise is required from professional team drivers. *every* single driver ever interviewed on the the subject will tell you how much teams focus on driver's health, and physical upkeep, to the extent of miles of running, calisthenics, weight training, and agility, the very same things that mr. mcnabb here does for 7 weeks at his eagles training camp, or whoever he plays for this year (lol there is a joke there, see it?)

Thank you for that!! I mean did you ever see some of those football players??!! They're fat!! People have no idea until they try it for themselves. I love Indycar racing, but there is no freaking way I'm gonna get in a car going over 230mph! The g forces are through the roof! Their body temp goes over 103 during certain races, and if people weren't morons and read he description with the video, they would shut their mouths and stop saying that heart rate and respirations are not an accurate means of determining what an athlete is. It says right there that they are aware that showing that doesn't really prove anything and they will be showing OTHER factors that prove what determines wether race car drivers are athletes.

I consider myself to be relatively healthy but even in a 125kmh kart my whole body aches after an hour, my shoulders feel like they’re popping out from having to hold onto the wheel for dear life. To Drive a F1 you need to do lot of cardio (the majority of F1 drivers do tetralon) and weight lifting with the neck and arms. You must pass a test in the hyperbaric chamber! You must be very thin and lightweight. While racing you can't breed through the braking area and corners because of the high G forces, you must use the straights to recorver from the abscense of oxigen. It's like driving a F-4 jet plane on the tarmac. There is no soft damping, no confort, you have a fire proof race suit, an helmet and an Hans Device and no ventilation sistem to cool you down or evaporate your sweat. The TOP GT drivers hav intense workouts, imagine a F1 driver... Real Karting is very demanding, this guy should try it!!

***** I disagree... Formula 1 is the pinnacle of all Motorsport. Not just from a racing view but also an engineering view. Also, F1 drivers are trained to a mental and physical peak, most likely more than any other racing driver. The G-force that is applied onto their bodies is far more superior than any Touring car. Plus, they need to race at such incredible speeds and have reaction times to suit. F1 is one of the most expensive sports in the world because of the technology involved in the Formula, as well as sponsorship. So, I think that F1 drivers deserve every dollar. To compete at the highest form of racing, I would sure like to be paid more than any other race driver :)

Professional rave drivers are athletes because they seek maximum fitness. Motor racing is all about concentration. Concentration depends on being able to think of nothing but the job at hand without any external influences. Signals of pain or fatigue will most certainly break a racing driver's concentration because the body associates these signals with survival giving them priority over anything else. Therefore the fitter a racing driver is, the longer it will take for these synptoms to set in, the more concentrated and therefore faster he will be. The most dedicated F1 drivers could not be any fitter if they wanted to.

Donovan was a QB, which means he burned like 900-1200 calories, maybe a little more since he ran a lot, per game, maximum. Compare that to the 3000 an F1 driver burns in one race over a shorter period of time. NFL athletes are near the bottom of the heap when it comes to fitness in pro sports. I think only like basketball and one other sport comes in lower on energy conversion, and golf isn't one of them. Food for thought.

actually, I'd say that QB is the single worst position in football to be talking smack about athleticism. Their job is to stand there for two to five seconds and throw the ball or hand it to someone else.
@kentucky_188
@kentucky_188 8 жыл бұрын
Ayrton Smith QB is considered the hardest position in sports. You're the leader of the team, you have to memorize a very complicated playbook but also memorize the defensive tendencies of the team you're playing, then during the play you have about 3 seconds to try and find a open receiver standing behind 5 guys that are 6'5. Plus you have big defensive lineman running at you trying to get a big hit on you
@AyrSpeed
@AyrSpeed 8 жыл бұрын
You think the rest of the team doesn't memorize plays? And my point was about physical athleticism. QB's don't get to even start to discuss mental workload with a racing driver. Maybe a drag racer, but that's about it. Drivers have to memorize track layouts, changes, (in most series) actively adjust the setup and analyze the results, enter turns with tenths of seconds between yourself and another driver with their car blocking your usual reference points, know whether to conserve fuel and to what degree, keep tabs on what drivers you're actually racing for position, whether you need to push this lap or wait for clear track, know whether you're in the aero wake, know whether you'll put yourself in the marbles if you make a move in this turn, whether the marble build-up is very bad, be aware of your own strategy while tracking others', and even checking tires in the mirrors and ahead to detect a puncture or leak before it becomes disastrous. A linebacker or a running back can try to talk smack about athleticism, but a QB is the last person that should comment on the load that a driver has on them.
@kentucky_188
@kentucky_188 8 жыл бұрын
Ayrton Smith I see your point but often when QBs are hit they don't have time to brace for impact and they're standing while running backs of linebackers are moving towards the thing they are hitting. Also the quarterback has to memorize what every player on the field is doing where as the other 10 just (usually) only have to memorize what they have to do
@AyrSpeed
@AyrSpeed 8 жыл бұрын
I also see what you're trying to say, but I still disagree. If you want to talk about big hits, a wall at 200mph is way more than any backer could ever hit (and I've chewed up some QB's in my day). And a QB has to remember a bit more than the others, I'll concede that, but you realize that the O-lineman have to remember the details of every running play, right? They have to know who is whose assignment, who's pulling, who's cutting, and find tells of a blitz. The QB has a fair workload, but I just hate when it's so hyper inflated.

You can't compare race driving and exercising as the same efforts. Driving is more of a stress level that's why your heart rate and breathing goes up while exercising is just a different level of efforts in terms of your heart and lung works.. I'm a cyclists and I race and ride 100 miles on a bicycle and I also occasionally track my car( mitsubishi evo x) so I personally can tell the difference. Matthew Spencer one thing is what you are capable as an individual the other thing is what the sport requires from you! You can be athletic yet play golf, that does not make golf an athletic sport! Racing is difficult, but in another way!

Ok.. so i have my own Kart and race it.. by no means at all is it crazy fast at all, top speeds of 85-90 KMPH but after 3 to 4 10 minute stints with breaks in between i am exhausted and muscles start to cramp.. and no I'm not unfit use to play football every weekend and train 3 times a week and I am more fucked after a days racing than i ever was playing football

Andy Leigh exactly you endured it, and if you stay on your feet your whole day, you will be useless the next day, that does not make it an athletic endeavor!

I do stay on my feet all day, i work 6 days a week 9 hour days at the moment doing physical labor and come home feeling fine and still go out for a drink and wake up fine, after a race i come home and fall into bed and wake up as if a ran a marathon, Honestly i use to think the same way until i got into it and could understand somewhat of what they would have to do to prepare for the events they do

If race car drivers are athletes then so are chess players

+Timothy Sweezey Stop it with you're opinion. Chess takes no strength/endurance, It extremely mental. I've been racing since I was 7 years old (im 13 now) I still race karts (not Nebs Fun World, 125cc 24hp karts) and I raced 3 hours a day for 6 days, my arms fell off after that. Mind you im extremely fit. So lets calculate that (weight x G-force= Turn in weight (in lbs) 320 lbs (my kart) x 3 G-Force = 960 lbs per corner. There was 12 corners at the track I just raced in and an average of 14 elsewhere. So 12x960 = 11520lbs ONE LAP. multiply that by 25 laps (race & average practice) 11520 x 25 = 288000lbs per race and practice! Only in KARTING, could you imagine F1 (Formula One)????? Huh, is you're brain okay after that math lesson?

Everytime i drive a rental go kart i've have more pain on my back, legs and arms and hand the next day than if i've had an high intensity gym training with weights. The result of the activity would always depend on how hard you make it. A girlfriend of a friend of mine says it doesnt make any pain on her arms after the drive but is normal, we give her several laps in advance. Point it will hurt depending on the effort you put into it. But man its a rush if you drive it fast AF. Love it!

Unlike race car drivers, Moto riders experience more physical demands.

Your opinion seems biased but I will pretend that is not the case 1.F1(and other forms of open wheel racing) is far more demanding in every possible way physically and mentally then moto racing. 2.Do you have the possibility of driving into a wall at around 320kmh? 3.There is a reason there is fewer F1(Including all the formula divisions) drivers then motocross, because its requires greater skill and physical endurance that some drivers just cant cope with. 4.Please retract that statement, that is all.

James Mosher Your comment is false for one reason: You never tried a bike. The MotoGP and F1 speeds are almost the same; the g-force applied to you is far more demanding when riding a bike because the g-force is applied to a well defined part of your body: arms, shoulders and neck; active parts when you ride a bike. In F1 the g-force is applied to all your body, with the neck a bit more exposed to these forces; however, the neck, is not a part of the body used to drive. Also, riding a bike, is far more demanding in terms of focus, an error and your out of the race whilst if the car doesn't hit the barriers, you can keep going. Regarding the numbers of single unites per categories, F1 has "fewer" cars than motocross only for one reason: Costs. A formula one costs as much as on entire grid of Motocross bikes, if not even more. Furthermore, thinking in that way, almost every endurance race is much less demanding than a f1 race, since there must be 3-4 times the cars involved in an f1 race; which is absolutely not the truth. With all of this, i am not saying f1 drivers are comfy in they're seats, i am saying that f1 (racing cars) and motogp (racing bikes) are equally demanding, both physically and mentally.

I think it's amazing how well people can handle cars and I admire that. That being said, my heart rate and respirations are elevated when I'm scared. Hell, a good movie will do that. An athlete is someone involved in physical exercise. If a race car driver is an athlete, then so are drummers and many other types of musicians. Once again, I admire what a race car driver does, I doubt I could ever do it, but as someone who loves exercise and working out, I don't know if its enough of a physical toll.

Mr. Duck, your comment shows how little you understand about exertion and effort plus the longevity of said exertion. Football, for example probably has simpler heart and breathing rates during plays which last 10-30 seconds in length. A racing driver operates at those heart and breathing rates for as little as 30 minutes for amateur racing drivers like myself to 2-5 hours at a stretch for Indy Car, NASCAR and other racing drivers. Both are athletes, both work on all aspects of their body to increase their ability to do their job.

I race go karts and after 4 stints of 2.5 hours in and endurance race, I cannot physically take my own suit off, a full day later I can barely move my shoulders. Race car drivers experience 5 times the G force kart racers do, they are full blooded athletes make no mistake.

its just a test, which is pretty unrepresentive of an actual race. This looks like a "push" lap. in a race, the first few laps are 100% full beans, but eventually they settle into a rhythm / groove. but def a physical challenge but the mental acumen required is up their with fighter pilots tbh

excuse me but someone who runs into another person and then has to take a 15 minute break or someone who hits a ball, then runs about 15 meters and then waits 3 to 5 minutes until the next bloke hits another ball isn't an athlete to me, too.
