I think the reason why Rolex is so prominate in the market is because their watches are conventional/standard designs. Meaning diver, pilot and dress type. Richard Mille is a high-end fashion watch, not likely to be around over the long haul. Fashion comes and goes and is favored as an addition to a more conventional/standard watch. Fun, yes, practcal, no.

Some of the faces of those R.M.s are so "busy," it's hard to even read the time; though I suppose if you're rich enough to own one, you don't really care what time it is. (When Alain Silbersteins came out, watches probably weren't being faked so much, like they are now. That's another threat to RM's sales, fakes).

The story remains the same, buy Rolex ONLY. Short/Long term you are set. Buy from your AD and be patient when you can. However, there are gray market deals out there. So, if you build a relationship on that end, you can win as well. BUT, Rolex ONLY.

To be honest about RM, I think you have the right analysis. And why do you have it? The truth is that for the vast majority of watch enthusiasts, the vast majority want a ROLEX, AP or Patek before an RM. If you consider the idea that an RM would cost as much as a nice Daytona $25,000. So the majority of watch buyers probably choose Daytona before RM. RM has never been a dream watch for 99.9999% of the world's population. Therefore, RM will also be forgotten when there are new generations of watch enthusiasts. That is, in 50 years, the Daytona will stand up, but the RM will be seen as uninteresting.

The reality is people that buy RMs find the Daytona boring and way overvalued, which is true. Rolex models are small beans to the ultra wealthy. I dont think AS is a good example of a hype brand. AS had some legitimacy or design. I agree with the Frank Muller comparison with RM. AS never marketed itself as something complicated or with use. FM hyped itself up as a master of complication but used eta movements. RM is marketing itself as a professional watch, hoping it will be seen as such.

Papi, you were too busy stealing hubcaps in the bronx in the 80's to understand Alain Silberstein. This was not a hype watch. It was quirky niche product like MB&F etc. It appealed to only a few people, and was not a "serious" watch. Neither was Jacob. Better comparison is Franck Mueller, which RM stole design from which was considered serious. But yes, this is a fashion product, and will look dated in 5-10 years. But it will become interesting again in 30+ years again.

MBnF is a piece of dog sh@#t. RM is too early to tell. As for now RM is way better bet than say Vacheron or even most Patek. The best watch to keep is of course Rolex. Second maybe AP Royal Oak. Then it's RM. Patek dress watch are very quiet. Patek Nautilus and Aquanaut is a good to keep...but not better than RM.
