Like arma rp, it was ok but the world had no life, ai was pretty much just quest giver style synths that didn't move or interact at all. Thats why it transitioned out so fast once gta picked up.

@@HenTrack RP games are easy to make if you have the budget and time. Rp games focous on making the players do everything, meaning you pretty much dont need NPCS, dont need a story, a purpouse, etc. Players make their own shit. But creating a fully fletched engine that can handle everything and balance everything to be fun? It would take years of development and time to figure something of this scale out because its never been done before. But it wouldnt be difficult in terms of coding, map making, voice actors etc. Just a steep learning curve. I mean, nobody can hire a dev that has experience in the RP game making genre because there hasnt been any. I can safely bet that there will be a huge VR RP game in a few years thats going to take over. We've seen how far GTA can go, and how much people love that. We've seen how far VR chat can go as well as Pavlov can go, and how much people love that. What if we combined these? But how? Nobody knows yet, but in a few years theyre gonna be huge.

they arent almost impossible, just the devs have ambitions for things that wont work and expect players to swarm to their game to give it the life ai should bring. A good rp game works both online and sp, one where you feel immersed, not where you feel like youre in an empty world. Pretty much any game with immersion is an rp game, you take on the role of a character in that world, it just doesnt have freedom. Freedom is easy to do but devs almost always get lazy or expect players to want what the dev wants.

Or just do it in a way that's remotely smart. Don't use the most difficult engine on the market, combined with assets that are way too high quality for an indie studio to reasonably match or recreate. Start the project on something easier like Unity or Godot, cut it out with the dumb open world bullshit and focus on a smaller but _well done_ map, and go for a stylistic look over a realistic one. That alone would cut down the development time by over half. It just requires, you know, actual work. Because you can't buy a bunch of shit off the marketplace and throw it together until it vaguely resembles a game.
@merzarino4 жыл бұрын
It wouldn’t. Indie teams may have momentum, but they don’t have direction. Knowing that each indie team has its own vision and perspective, and lack a developed management infrastructure to piece the resources together, it’s hard to believe project like this will happen on indie scope, not without a considerable amount of years of growing team self-awareness knowing its strengths building a consistent working schedule, but then when that happen, it would just become a corporate company already.

Games with RP being the central focus seems really difficult to do because the idea of doing a mundane task like running a store isn't fun when there are much more interesting jobs in your game. (Shoppe Keepe, Recetear, or Moonlighter don't count since those games are designed around the idea of owning a shop and have additional aspects to them like dungeon exploration) but if no one wants to do the mundane tasks then the rest of the more interesting jobs can't really work so the whole thing collapses.

Its so far from possible that its laughable. Gta has 1/64th of the depth of what these rp games claim they will have and yet it took 5 years, 1000 people and nearly 300 million dollars to make gta v. The idea of an "RP" game in essence is so plain and textile that punching out a cash grab full of assets bought online will probably be how almost all of them are created until a studio with some actual funding and proper management behind it decides to explore that realm. It is an interesting at that, a virtual life simulator that is as easy or hard as you want to make it based upon how dedicated you are to realism of course. That being said the idea of "Well i guess i can be a truck driver and deliver stuff to stores" absolutely sucks as a gameplay loop and yes i know these games offer more radical paths but how long until "well i can rob gas stations" starts to feel like as much as of a job as the delivery truck gig does? Another thing is that anyone can produce the basic systems behind an rp game or heavy simulator like atmosphere, they aren't exactly the hardest things to make and that exact formula is why you see so many cash grabs and fakes littered with "roleplaying" when describing what their game, it's too simple to raise suspicion.

RP games are highly self-destructive since they depend on the players playing the game "right" to be fun, and as the player base grows things like KOS and general toxicity grows within it. You can't have ADMs/police/etc. 24/7, and adding automatic systems to avoid bad behavior would mostly just hurt the game since it removes the freedom that is at the literal point of a RP game.

The problem with making games that are role play from the ground up is that the scope is limited compared to what modding other games have accomplished: GTA 5 was already a gorgeously detailed living environment that, with its existing systems enhanced on top of role play mods, it becomes one of the currently best ways to play a “open world” role playing game online. It’s incredibly hard to get an entire game working with the RP mechanics alone. Imagine trying to create the true scale and detail Rockstar and other noted open world developers have shown with their games? That’s why most of them end up feeling flat, drab, and fake.

Such devs always have a website, a company, a forum etc. What I never see is that they have a complete game (engine or anything) first and all the fancy stuff only after that. If you have a pet project, do it in your free time, take your time and come up with it when it's complete. Backers, remember you're getting what you pay for. You pay for nothing, you get nothing.

Huh, that's actually quite a vital point raised around 05:38. It's so far apparent that no indie studio is successfully able to actually deliver an RP (or life) standalone game in due time and with certainty. They are all barrel busts. You need a bigger or experienced team with sufficient funds, and of those funds a portion has to come out of their own pockets or angles. The more you (need to) rely on crowdfunding specifically, the more risk there is that it might go bust if confidence is lost and if public financial support dries up through those channels. People, for the love of god, look at all the failed RP games from indies so far and ask yourself if you want to throw money once the next lame pitch comes around from some studio. Rather wait until games progress to a good point that doesn't rely on feature creep or asset galore.

Why any of the big studios would not make an RP game nowadays? I think one of the reasons is that a game like that needs hundreds (maybe thousands) of dedicated servers in every (or in major) region(s) and state of the art of netcode (to minimise lags because of players with high ping)! Think about the cost of those servers and those servers MUST handle at least 100 players (or more) at the same time imho. Like just imagine how many things happen in an RP game that MUST be calculated and synchronised in real time. (Even Rockstar has that ugly P2P system because it's CHEAP) For example: - players (place, animations, skins, clothes, etc.) - interactions - any moving object (cars, planes, bullets, debris, etc) - NPCs (place, animation, ect.) - weather - maybe physics, trajectory (if there is) too(?) And let's not forget about how you keep the playerbase busy/entertained. Random events, races, lore, some story(?) something is that interesting? It is an astro-f'kin-nomical task/goal.

You don't need a studio or a registered company to make a finished, polished and fun game. All you need is, as mentioned in the video, a realistic project scope, skills, experience, work ethic and time. I released a game (DinoSystem) back in 2015, which is still in constant development. I failed 2 kickstarters, and yet i delivered the game (appreciated by most players) because my scope was realistic: no fancy 3d graphics, no huge map, but deep mechanics, emergent gameplay and focus on polishing. These projects that manage to be succesful in crowdfunding (and yet fail to deliver) are the very reason players get tired of supporting indies (like myself), and I'm quite tired of that. I'm tired because i see people without a proper work ethic, or even a clue about development, putting together assets on Unity or UE4, forging fancy trailers, luring players in their crowdfunding campaigns, and make plenty of money by just being clueless and inexperienced, or in some cases shady. I poured my heart and soul into my game, for 6 years, delivered something people enjoy, and feel a profound sense of injustice for all that. People expect a game that's both visually stunning and deep in gameplay and mechanics, but have no clue about the work needed to achieve that, and that's true for both the players who support those projects AND the naive (or shady) indies that attempt to undertake them. Either we start appreciating a deep, complex game despite its simple graphics (Dwarf Fortress anyone?), or just accept the hard reality that only an AAA studio could be able to achieve both, at least for the time being.
@agublizzard5 жыл бұрын
IMO, it's impossible for indies. You need at least 3 very talentend programmers and at least one of them must be an incredibly talented architect + software designer. Multiplayer adds a whole lot of complexity to an already incredibly complex game.

it's a pretty clear cut case of dunning kreuger where people who are proficient at a task rank themselves as higher than actual proffesionals because they haven't learned enough about the task to realize that they still have a lot of learning to do

I was contacted by a developer for a Level Design position to create a large world for their game. They ask me how long it would take me to build them a 8x8 world with assets. I was honest. They stopped responding to me.... This isn't the first time this has happened. The indie game development scene is full of people with big dreams, and absolutely no idea the amount of time and work that goes into these projects. I think Bigfry is right that most of these are not "scams", just pipe dreams. As for RP games coming from Arma/GTA modders, until you get a "TEAM" of people that have actual industry experience on shipped games, with real backing, real time frames, and real artists, you are never going to get a decent product. Modifying a game someone else made, photoshopping police skins on other peoples uniform meshes, and importing ripped assets you bought online does not provide you with he experience to go out and make a full game.

The main problem I think is they want very small details in the game when most RP servers have systems that aren't that detailed. Like in Arma 3 where making drugs isn't very specific but its still fun to do it because its not too realistic. The big issue is they try to be too realistic when it should feel realistic not be realistic.

It’s just sad that when people aim to make something that they dream of inspired from other games, they only see portions of those games and not knowing how much resources it took to make that far. Indie has more energy than corporate company, sure, but suffers the management resources to achieve big scope project, not unless they start small and work a bunch of years to grow it larger.

all this games concepts exists because Rockstar have not yet released that next evolution of the GTA series... i personaly love how they keep adding new content to the game after so many years... but i always felt like they there was a loot that they could improve in a new game, and a lot to be added in game mechanics, physics, assests and graphics... but GTA 6 is not even at the horizon, and they wont upgrade an already working game so the amount of people thirsty for that next level game is growing and growing everyday, and some just want to make it them selves

Someone needs to make a game like this with no profit in mind! Have hundreds off accepted devs working on it that can all vote on things created by devs to see if everyone wants it in the game! The gaming community would come together to create one amazing game with no one profiting off it. Simply made for the love of Gaming! THIS IS WHAT WE NEED

Profit is needed to give people incentive to work on the thing in the first place, the best games and movies have all been profit driven and wouldn't have been made otherwise.

RP games wouldn't have this kind of rep if an actually competent AAA studio decided to make a project like this but for whatever reason only tiny teams of people who don't have the budget for it are the ones creating them. I guess they never do because you can't put lootboxes, or rather, surprise mechanics, in the game without defeating the purpose of the RP

maybe these scam rp games has an dark unknown side with it? maybe there is a producer that hiers some willing indie devs to mix up some easy made assets and then start kickstarter so they can make money? maybe it's a bigger coincident that we see so many scam rps?

Yup this is defo a scam, the only game that comes close to making an actual RP game is star citizen and well thats taking a long time and may never come out, but they got $200 million with 500 people working on it and even they are struggling to make an amazing RP so i cant imagine how far two people can get with just 100k it aint gonna happen, star citizen is really our only realistic hope but probably will never get finished i hope it does but ...... yeah in like 10 more years

So basically it's a 3rd person Sims, a genre that even Sims, a game from massive development and publishing studios needs years of development and many people working on it to come out, and at first feels also empty. RP games are a good idea, for example I first saw the trailer for RAW, thought it was awesome and then found this channel talking about the genre and how all these games are basically nothing. My suggestion to these people would be to start on mobile game development, easier to develop and no matter how simple a game is, if it's unique, it will find it's fanbase.
@Brandon756895 жыл бұрын
Well, I mean. They're not scams, because they don't even have the correct financial infrastructure to maintain a public image to try to scam you out of your money. What you're essentially getting is gamers, scripters, and hobbyist making games. These RPG games are usually too much bang for the buck and they are done by people who have never made a game before, never ran a company before, and do not know about the ills involving technical issues and launch. The games and devs promise a lot and always have great ideas. But its mostly because they are gamers like the consumer and are filled with passion to have a dream game that many other gamers always wanted. But when challenged with the task at hand, they either make a Giant mistake and don't understand the technical problems involved (Like Identity) or they didn't think anything through and didn't understand all the bells,whistles, sweat and blood that go into developing a game ( Project Life). The only game that looks remotely promising is Onset because they are doing the CORRECT thing to do and that is to relieve the load of programming from the developers and let the community make the "RP" gamemode. Just like how it is in FiveM/GTA 5 RP. All they have to do is make sure there is a good API, decent amount of assets, and a working foundation, and the community can do the rest. 120,000 USD for Raw is nice and dandy, but NOT good enough for what they want to do with the amount of experience they have. They are about $20,000 short of what Identity raised for their kickstarter and we know how that turned out.

just download mods for GTA ... I've had more fun in the RP lobbies with friends in the last year than I did the "normal" games built for RP. I've been a cop, a dispatcher, an EMT, a tow trucker, a criminal, a store owner, a car mechanic, etc. It was FREE too. Yeah, of course I bought GTA5 on sale for like $40, but overall, the foundation of Grand Theft Auto is sooo large, well-known & "alive" compared to starting your own from scratch. Its WAAAAY too big of a project for anyone to do who isn't Rockstar or at the AAA publishing level. You'd be sacrificing in too many areas to save time, effort & money. Better graphics? Shit connection, lag & glitches. Go into every house? Small ass map. Play as a police officer or civilian? Piss poor progression. Good sound design? Crap animations. My opinion, if you want to build this sort of game? Learn to Mod. Build upon an already established game. THEY CAN BE FUN. But make it reasonable to achieve. You can't be Rockstar Games with a 5 man crew. Your unrealistic and going to fail.

Every one of these crowd funded RP games will end up like identity, a worthless asset flip with nothing to actually do. Most of the people starting these kick starters aren't serious game developers. They are scammers who download UE4, bought assets from the store then made a shitty video showing off their "game" where all you can see is other peoples assets in an engine they didnt make. It takes very little actual developing skill to create one of these trailers. They usually just show off some buildings they bought and some cars they bought. Never are they showing how core game systems like inventory etc work because those core game systems dont fucking exist. I would feel bad for people who are bamboozled by this crap if it weren't so transparently a scam.

There are a metric shit ton of RPers out there. If even one of these games get it right it will be huge just based off the fact very few modern games cater to the RP community.
