In Europe the labels must show nutritional value per 100 grams. That way there's really no point in trying to cheat with serving sizes, and you can compare foods easily.

If you have chips with a meal you'll probably have a few, but if you are having chips AS a meal you might eat a bag. It might be that the FDA is not considering binge eating. Also you have to consider those individual serving bags.

I like how the European Nutritional Labels are based on 100 grams of the food. I believe maybe a mix of both would be good in the US, a typical serving size, and a 100 gram label to prevent to sneaky serving sizes. The one that comes to mind is TicTacs; they get away with labeling their candy as 0 calories because their serving size is 1 tictac, and since the law only requires them to label when there is at least 1 gram of sugar, they can say there is no sugar, despite the fact that a tictac is 97% sugar
