Regie, I want it! Been watching your videos for the past week or two and have become a big fan. Thanks for all of the info! I sent the first books I’ve ever had graded to CGC and am anxiously awaiting getting them back. This is a great topic. I kept going back and forth on wether or not I should try and get some books signed via CGC SS and decided that I loved the book enough that I didn’t want to take a chance of it getting damaged in the process. I might do it in the future for other books but for now will just get raw books signed for the experience of meeting my favorite creators.

Great Video Regie. I like how you touched on how signatures can affect the value of a book in both a positive and a negative way. Joshua Richardson Lol. The back wall? I can hook you up with this Lazarus but that back wall is a WHOLE other story. Lol. Seriously though I didn’t have really any of those books in 2017 so anything is possible. I’m glad that the video sparked some thoughts within you. At the end of the day, I want us all to stop and think before we pull the trigger. I have had a few “oh snap” moments over the years because I have a bias for action and that jammed me up. Hey regie. Nice video! I thought about this topic the week before this last weekends dallas comic show. i did bring a few books but decided not to get them signed for that reason of 'lowering the grade of the book'. oh well. but i think on books that have some sentimentality, i may buy a white paint pen for the artist to sign in those dark areas that you mentioned.
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure that I realized that the signature could lower the grade of the book prior to that discussion with CGC. The crazy thing is that I almost had my Iron Man 55 signed. I was on my way to the con and turned around. I submitted the book and it came back at a 9.4. Bullet dodged. I think each of us has to do what’s right for our collections. Given the importance of this information, I wanted to share it with folks so that they could make informed decisions. Someone commented that they still get signatures but not on or in a comic. They do it on sketch pads, etc. If you decide to roll with white signatures on books in negative space that also works. It might actually be pretty cool looking. 👍🏾

What you said about the placement is true. I have loved J Scott Campbell since I was in my late teens. Now being in my 40s, and loving spider Gwen/ghost spider, I found a book signed by him online with an official COA saying it was part of the J Scott Campbell signature collection. Had he signed it horizontally, it would’ve gone across the art, so he signed it vertically just a bit below the staples in the spine. It sounds like what you were saying, when he signed it he didn’t want to sign across the artwork.

Personally I have never bought a signed book, but I would buy one of Stan Lee just because its a book that the legend himself has touched. However I do own many books that I personally got signed by the artists just because I loved the story or the art. For example, I LOVE the white knight story arc and had Sean Gordon Murphy sign a few, okay maybe like 5-6 of my issues. Those I would never sell and might get slabbed just to preserve them, but not to sell. Signatures are great but it shouldnt bump up the price that most people expect or are selling them for. I see them as we get them for the love of the book and the artistry that is involved in creating it. Another great vid! I know I know I'm all over your channel today lmao

I'm pretty meh about signatures. I've never been an autograph hound unless it's from someone I have a relationship with (I work in book publishing so I often get signed books from authors with whom I've worked). That said, I have some signed books I bought from another collector. But I got them because the lots filled a hole in my collection and the price was right even without the sigs. I have to admit, though, having 30 or so Iron Man with Bob Layton's signature on them is nice. His run on IM reconnected me to comics in my early 20s.

Another great informative video Regie. Your going places my brotha. I feel everyone has their own reasoning behind doing things. This was definitely a great video to get people to think a little more into what their doing. I think cost factors in more when your getting the sig for the purpose of re-sale but if it's just for personal reasons then cost is a factor but a lot less of a burden. I have quite a bit of signed slabbed books because I wanted to get them signed and preserved. I also have books that are just signed with no grading and I will not part with either because I wanted to meet the artist or writer. I know cost is always a big factor in anything we do but I feel like you tend to relax a little more on cost if the book is staying in your PC and not for re-sale. Again great job Regie, one of the hardest working men in this comic KZbin world. lol. Also Regie I want it. Not sure how I feel about saying that sounds a little dirty. Lmao.

So you want in huh. That didn’t make it feel less dirty did it? 😂😜 You raised some excellent points bro. Firstly, Regie I want it. Secondly, the only signature I have is a ROM #18 signed by Sal Buscema in the slash page. I would never get it slabbed because I want to be able to see the signature on the inside, but I even if the sig was on the cover I only own it because I am a ROM fan. To each his or her own, but I primarily slab books to sell and I would not sell it. Not that it would go for much haha! Love your videos, Regie. Keep it up!

Sometimes the best lessons in life are learned the hard way through personal experience. Key point in your video is if you're gonna get a sig on a book, get it from someone who actually had a hand in creating the book or character, and not some celebrity who might have acted the part. Question for you. Do you think the experience would have been as great if you collect the signature on a sketch book versus a comic? I only ask because someone else mentioned that they don't get signed comics but they get signatures on sketch books so that they can still have that artist experience. Thoughts?
@puffcomics8336
@puffcomics8336 5 жыл бұрын
@@RegieCollects I think Sketch books is a great way to go getting signatures, and an artist doing a commission in a sketch book is worth it for a personal collection of artwork. But if I met the creators of the comic, I'm still getting it signed for my own personal preference. I never really chased signatures prior to 2013, as I just wanted to collect and read. Now I meet creators, get my books signed, get a picture, and feel overjoyed that I met them.

"Regie, I WANT IT!!!" I hope that works... Another great, thought provoking video. Personally, I don't currently have any signed books, but if I did get it signed I would try to have them sign it in a color that works well with the cover, as well as in a placement that doesn't detract too much from the artwork. I would still have them sign the cover, and probably slab it just to preserve the book and signature. I wouldn't get a signature for purely monetary reasons, but only to meet the artist/writer/etc and have something to remember them by. I would try to take a picture with them at the signing and maybe frame it together with the book as a show of proof that I met them (in case my friends think I forged the signature ;) )

Whats up Reggie, So I have a few signed books... From Stan lee to Todd McFarlane, Romita, Zeck, Etc... That I wish I had got verified by CGC for that beautiful gold label... But certain artist like Todd McFarlane only do a CGC signing once a year... But he will sign pretty much anything you have otherwise throughout the rest of the year and Unfortunatly that means either I have togo through CBCS or PGX and because of the wait and ugly Red label of CBCS, I go through PGX "I personally like there Gold labels" but they wouldnt sell for a huge price like CGC... So recently... Because I just love the CGC cases so much, Ive been just sending in my books that were not witnessed to CGC and getting the Green Labels... Yeah it sux just a lil, But honestly I have the COA's & I know who signed it so the green label isnt so bad to me anymore... I think Id rather have it protected in a great slab even if it is a green label its still Qualified... And YES Plz... REGGIE I WANT IT!!! I love that cover of Lazerus & a kool story line... Keep up the great vidz bro!!! Much love... - The Rated One So I had a couple questions I thought about after writing you... So Question 1 did you have yr ASM 50 7.5/7.0 Pressed after getting it signed??? Question 2 I watched yr vid with CGC and as u said they can down grade for signatures - My question is on Remarks do they feel the same way will they down grade for the size of the remark or something, cause Ive seen botth 9.8s & 9.6s with remarks is that why they get the 9.6??? 3rd is more me throwing this in to the conversation... I had a couple books signed by Chris Claremont and he would only sign over the title of the book which was weird to me, he litterally pulled the book out of my mylar that i had cut windows in and taped off to sign the title... so as he did that I noticed he had a black marker and was about to sign the title that was also black I quickly ask him nicley if he was going to have to sign the title to please use a gold or silver marker which he kindly did, but it tripped me out how he was set in only signing his name on the title of the book... So right on Reggie sorry so krazy long, much love brother... - RR

I have a Todd SpiderMan with the green label. The raw signed book was a gift from the wife and like you, I just wanted the book protected. You do what you have to do, right. 👍🏾👍🏾 Yes, the ASM 50 was unslabbed at. 7.5 then signed twice, pressed and re-graded at a 7. It’s all good because I have two amazing signatures from Stan and Romita Sr. 😀 I believe that a remark is treated the same as a signature. It will depend upon the size, position, etc. If I remember I can ask that question during the next CGC live stream and get a definitive answer. I think Chris will only sign the title area because he’s a writer and not the artist. I assume that he’s doing it to be respectful of the talented artist that he’s worked with over the years. It would have been helpful to know from him but that’s an assumption that I’m making. Thanks for watching the channel and also for that robust response. I really do like the engagement. I enjoy going to comic cons and getting some of my books signed if I know that specific artists or writers are going to be there. Depending on the book, I may or may not get it slabbed. I take into consideration the value of the book, the cost of getting it slabbed, and any cost affiliated with artist/writer fees to get said books signed or sketched not including whether they charge extra for witnessing for signature services. Most of my signed books are raw but I do have a few sketches/ signatures that I got slabbed to preserve them.

Got all my signed books signed back in the day in the white space at bottom of first page :) John Byrne (Avengers), Walt and Louise Simonson (Power Pack, Thor), Mike Grell (a few years worth of Green Arrow), Peter David (entire run on Hulk), Bernie Wrightson. Love 'em! Glad there are services that can authenticate old school sigs (CBCS's third party for example). Still don't understand why CGC hasn't added that to their services. The whole "ink on X" seems to dismiss things like you describe: Jack Kirby sig on splash page - I mean talk about many collector's dreams! Q: How did you get the person from CGC to go out and witness Romita Sr's sig? Is that a service they offer? I thought they only did that at shows. Learning from your awesome backlog content!
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. CGC doesn’t want to risk damage to reputation from approving a fraudulent signatures. As you would image Jack Kirby and other popular signatures are often forged. CGChas opted to take a less risky approach by having facilitators/witnesses. Facilitators can witness signatures and submit on behalf of artist. Artists and creators can also submit directly to CGC. I have a video on the channel that explains facilitators. Hope this helps.

Personally I love getting my issues signed. Why? Because "Regie I want it" ☺️ I agree the person signing the book should ideally have had some input into that issue. Stan Lee is a hard one, as if he created the character in question I think that is ok. When I had a chance to meet him I didn't have a first print issue written by him so instead took a reprint of my favourite issue... Since then, I now have many 1st Prints, written by Stan but have sadly missed out on having his autograph on one. Maybe one day I will purchase one on the secondhand market. Keep up the great content, loving all the information so far. You've really taught me a lot. 👍

New Viewer to you.. but Old to comic collecting. So old that I read A.S.M. #1 when it came out.. so 65 now... Have loved Comics all my Life... thought you talked very Intelligently about collecting comics.. sorry about the #50 being lower, do you really think they lower it because of Signature, as it did have CGC Yellow Label, or maybe it got a under grade 7.0 grade on it's on merit. Have saw some odd Grading on some CGC Labels. I have some comics signed many years ago when Stan Lee did shows the last 30 to 40 years ago and signed. Guess those comics would be down graded ? Will be checking some of your older Videos. Ron

Welcome to the channel bud and thanks for the kind words. Please tell me that you have at least one copy of ASM 1. :-) The book started out as an unpressed, uncleaned, graded 7.5 from CGC. The book was signed, cleaned and pressed and came back at a 7.0. The book had been originally graded within the last year by the previous owner. Based upon my recent interviews with the head grader from CGC, signatures can have a negative impact on comics based upon quality of the signature, placement, size, etc. If you watch these interviews we also learn that grading is partly subjective. (Insert shrug here). At the end of the day, we'll never know the answer. I am more than pleased with the book and I'm still over the moon about meeting Stan Lee. That .5 was totally worth it. :-) Thanks again for taking the time to watch this video. I hope that you'll stick around and check out some of the other videos. Oh, and, let me know about that ASM. #SpideyFan

Hey Regie, You Know having met Stan about 3 times though the years, The first time was in the very late 80's & he was the only "Star" at the "very small" Convention in Coconut Creek, FL... He had a very long line and was Signing having Pic taken with him... took about 2 1/2 hours in the Line... but getting my turn was The Greatest Comic Fan Day of My Life, I laid out in Front of Him... AF #15 ASM #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 .. He JUMPED OUT OF HIS CHAIR and gave me a hug! He even asked me "are you sure you want me to sign this!" I told him Please sign them... inside the splash page.. He Signed #6 cover & splash Page (2 Signatures) & about 3 or 4 pictures... He was only in His mid-sixtys and very energetic & gave a standing room only talk about Marvel, his was living in CA. by then and working on getting a Spider-man movie put together, (it took another 10 before that happen!) Now about the Spider-man #1.. we would trade comic books with our buddies in those days (early 60's) the book came back without a cover.. guess what, I never loaned out my Spider-mans after that.. but I of course replaced it in my early 30's before I me Stan.. sorry about the long winded reply..

I am in the process of trying to put together my Spider-Man run. I have #1 and #6 and several other low number books. I hope to get an AF15 before year’s end. Fingers crossed. ☘️ 🤞🏾 That’s sad about that ASM 1 but live and learn, right?!? As least you were able to “correct” it. Thank you for sharing that awesome story with me.

That would be too complex given who can sign a book. Put another way, a Stan Lee signature on a comic has a different value than one signed by Todd McFarlane and a writer or inker. There are also a limited number of signed books at a given issue within a given period which makes it harder to do an apple to Apple comparison. It would be best for you to reference GoCollect and evaluate the values for yourself based upon what you are buying or selling.

Great video, I've been thinking of your points in this situation for a while, for me I have to say the signiture would just have to be if I like the artist,inker or writer and not for me to sell on or send off to cgc as the cost for me being in england and the amount of time it would be away is just not worth it for me, but also I still would like the signiture in a decent place so that it didn't affect the look of the cover as personally it would just bug me if for example it was across a face, I would just put it in a top loader then hang it up would still look cool !!! I tend to get things signed for me personally. I've never flipped a signed book yet. Wasn't aware of the possible downgrade because of the signature. Again, for me it would be ok as I wouldn't be looking to sell it on. I got my New Mutants 98 signed by Fabian Nicieza and it came back a 9.4, I'm now wondering if that was effected by the signature (again, not an issue, just curiosity). Do you think the graders notes would tell you if that was the case?

@@RegieCollects Nothing on the label, it's white pages, can't see any spine issues either and corners look pretty sharp. It did have an impression in the book top and bottom where that white plastic binding cord you get had dug into it, but got the full press and clean. You can see a tiny bit still at the top, but only because I know where to look for it. That might be enough to drop it I guess, but it's the only slightly visible defect I can see. Not complaining though, it sat in a stack of books for 27 years and not in a long box. Might get the notes this weekend when I have time just to get a definitive answer

Very interesting points made that have been gnawing at me for a long time. When I go in person to a signing it is most definitely because I love that person's work and want to meet them and have a memento of that meeting. I've met JIM LEE, AL EWING and GAIL SIMONE for just those reasons. I have a NEW GODS signed by JACK KIRBY on the splash page that I purchased just to have something signed by him. And a few STAN LEE signatures as well. I have a book signed by JOHN ROMITA SR. that he had nothing to do with just to get his signature and a book that I wanted that was signed by the actor who plays the character in a TV show. The best and most meaningful are the in person signatures for me. Good video.
