I love my Apeks RK3s. Good old jetfin style, somewhat lighter than the old jetfins. Not particularly great for swimming hard(it's hard work), but for a more leisurely pace they're great, frog kick and glide.

Another good video Alec! I think alot ot viewers probably don't know that all split fins are products licensed from the original Natures Wing patent from the early 90s. Splits are great for a diver like myself that has spinal problems, less stress on the legs. Splits also require more research. My Tusa splits are much lighter and respond very differently than my Apollo Bio Fins. The Nova is an amazing line and I've only heard one complaint from a lady that said they were just to much fin for her. I blame the dive shop on that case for going after the $$$ instead of putting a smaller framed lady in a setvof Novas. Thanks for another great video.

Funny you should say that. I have a 1/2 dozen nieces and nephews and they have a bunch of kids - not sure how many. My nieces and nephews all call me Uncle Alec. We're an old family that still respects it's elders (good for me!). When we have our annual family reunion, I go to each little one and ask them. "What's my name?" I have them all trained to say "GREAT Uncle Alec" with the emphasis on great! It's quite humorous and I'm sure in a few years when I'm gone they'll remember Great Uncle Alec. Thanks for watching. Dear Alex, I really appreciate these videos - the main reason being that I get to think about scuba when I'm not in the water. I live in the Pacific Northwest and go diving all year round. Went last Friday and each of us caught our limit (12 large males) of Dungeness Crabs. We also spearfish (big lingcods), but most of the time we are simply enjoying the view and getting dive-bombed by seals, sealions, and sea-birds, as well are picking up an occasional anchor for craigslist. :) I use Apollo split fins (spring-straps). I am 66 years old and have had surgery on both knees at least twice. I also use the flutter kick, but also the frog kick on occasion. My spares/backup fins are Scubapro Jets. I have also tried/own a number of other kinds of fins. With our strong tides, I must regularly go against current. I find the Apollos are very effective for speed in current, and my (younger) friends have commented how they can't keep up with me. Part of this is that they are flailing about fighting the current, instead of like me and the fish, who are streamline and hugging the bottom. But a large part is the a shorter strong flutter kick, with the Apollo split fins, that is easier on my knees. Regular fins simply put too much strain on my knees. My advice is to try out different styles. My much younger son wants the big longer stiffer fins. For me, the Apollo Bio Spit fins are the best. Great video Alex, I bought the ScubaPro Split fin, I had a bad knee the time and was told they would take pressure off my knee, they are good if you are finning slow and easy, but to get to a destination and actively swimming they are not efficient and are heavy although they float, they are fatiguing...Will be getting the Nova for this season....thanks for all you do.

I would say that the split fin is great depending on your general purpose. If my next photo op is to the next bommie then the split fin is better for getting me there in good time without too much air, but maybe not as much control when I get there. For me it's a more straight line kick and I get accustomed to that. For Deco, wreck and other diving, I use a more traditional fin.

What most divers don't know is that back at the start of recreational diving, the majority of manufactured gear came from Europe. I tried them all & one thing I am certain about is split fins don’t work well in a current as the vortex created that the fin pushes against gets washed out of place. I have felt this & seen the difference in & out moving water. I actually would choose the split fins in a quarry but in the ocean I don’t use them anymore. Force fins (the short duck feet type) work well but my favourite is aqualung slingshots...noticeably better than anything else I tried.

Hi Alec, The scubapro nova fin, had an insert in the foot well, which you took out on the video, I've noticed that many fins have these when bought new, my question is do these inserts have a purpose, I've asked many divers and store owners, but no one seems to know the answers, I personally leave them in as it makes taking off my fins easier when in my heavy dry suit, just thought I'd ask as I'm sure many other divers may wonder why, as most footwells are ridged anyway, many thanks.

The "wing tip" part, is called a WINGLET in aviation. There are actually on MANY high performance aircraft; airliners, privet jets, gliders and many other aircraft with the goal of great aerodynamic efficiency.

I love my Tusa Xpert Zoom full foot split fins. Extremely light weight, no pressure on knees or muscles, provide sufficient open warm water propulsion, never came off foot even in terrible drift dives, and cheap. Too bad they were discontinued. I will be sad when they completely fall apart. 15 years and counting....

Lots of divers would agree with you. I used them and sold them for quite a while but the fad seemed to die off. Fins are constantly evolving and there are some really good fins available now. I always say, if you like it and it works for you, stick with it. But, I also say that you should see what else is available and maybe try others too. Remember that the Force fin has been available for a long time. It was revolutionary at the time but many newer fins have come along. Now they are the revolutionary ones Take care. Alec

Hi Alex, Split-Fin. I tried these when they were all the Rage. However, I found I could not swim backwards by moving my ankle and not my legs. Why? Simple, when filming I use my feet from the ankles down to manoeuvre forward and back would to Zoom my Camera(Video) to the correct distance from the subject and stay in position. And I found the Split-Fin did not work at all for this technique, because it did not capture enough water at slow speed. I found the best Fins for this had these 2 features. The whole of my Booties goes inside the Fin, which takes the strain off my foot. Hence the back of my Fin supports the underside of my foot. The Fin also stays on when you do a Scissor entrance (Grand Step) into the Water from large Boat. Hence from higher above the water than a small Boat. And the Fin stays on!

I was hoping you'd compare them to the nova's. I've owned several fins and the bio fin is my favorite at the moment. I'm upgrading gear in the spring and the Oceanic OCi computer and Nova fins are definitely on my list. Just trying to decide on the bcd. Keep jumping around between the Scubapro Hydros, Glide x, or Seahawk. The shops around here don't only sell one or two brands and only work on stuff they sell so mix matching beyond the computer won't be ideal unless I disassemble and go to several shops. I'm leaning towards the Hydros but that is a big chunk of change and not having pockets is a bit of a downer but I know I can mount a pocket and add the loops. I'm trying to be less of a christmas tree under water so part of this is a good thing. Also going back and forth on the air2 or not. I watched your video on the bcd regulator but still kind of appeals to me. My biggest problem with the air2 is where I use my gear. I never have the same buddy twice from trip to trip since I none of my friends or family are into scuba. Kind of risky. For a weekend lake dive or 2-3 drives per day at a cruise destination.

I dive back plate and wing with one pocket, and the whole set up cost about $400, but thats my thing. I also own an Air2, I dont use it unless I decide to put dive with my zeagle ranger, almost never, but I will say if your buddy needs air they arent going to stop to look for your safe second longer than 1 second. If they dont have air they wil take the one out of your mouth, which is fine, and can be expected in a life threatening situation. You were just breathing, they weren't. You are the one that should practice with your Air2. know where it is, know how easy it is to reach and to use. In the end a panicked or desperate diver will take any air source they can even if its in your mouth. Just know how to calmly reach for your safe 2nd without adding to the situation.

Yes. The split fins are not light. They need a lot of support along the edges to keep them fin-shaped so the weight goes up. The Novas on the other hand, are really lightweight - good for travel and saves a lot of energy when finning. Take care. Alec

The weight is generally an advantage for coldwater or dry suit setups. It's just another way to distribute weight and work on balance and manoeuvrability. The jets have become my favourite snorkling fins as well, because of how natural the response is, and because of the power they afford. These are the old ones, with no added silicone to the mold. I even do most of my spear fishing with jet fins.

Bungies last as long as rubber or steel springs. You have to take care of them rinse after salt water diving or the salt erodes the bungie. They are easy to replace and very comfortable. Try different fins on at your local dive shop to see what you like best.

Scubapro still sells split fins. As does Tusa and Atomic. I'll bet they've all done the research in a "water tunnel" and can see the advantages of the split fin design. Split fins are more efficient than standard paddle fins. My personal experience is the same. For the standard flutter kick, split fins rock and paddle fins suck. I say that having tried both fins over long distance...not just a short sprint. Not only are the split fins faster, but no leg cramps. That said, when I want more maneuverability, and I don't need speed and/or I'm not worried about fighting currents, I wear paddle fins. Back kicking is easier with paddle fins. I'll guess that some of the more futuristic fin designs are attempts to have it all. Something with the ability to maneuver like a paddle fin, but the efficiency of a split fin. That is likely what Scubapro was attempting with their Seawing Nova. Not quite as efficient as a split fin, but better than any normal paddle fin. And easier to maneuver in than a split fin. I haven't tried the Seawing Nova's, but I'm interested. And the light weight for air travel is another advantage.

I think you'll like the Nova. It's quite a bit lighter than the split. Splits by their nature are heavier. The ribs must be stronger and the fin itself is thicker to stand up to the flexing. Most shop owners I speak to tell me that splits don't sell as well as they used to. I think they were a novelty. If you like them, stick with them but be sure to get a pair of Novas to try. Gosh i'm sorry. I have several pairs myself and at our vintage dive events there's always a couple. There is no way to repair that old rubber. It may be time to retire your old Voits. Clean, them, put them into a frame with a picture of yourself diving and you can tell your grandkids that you used to be a frogman. There's no glue or tape that works that I know of. I wonder if those "new fin style" engineers ever tried to do something else than standard owd flutter kick. For me a good fin must also perform well with frog kick, helicopter turn and back kick. That rules out most of those new fancy designs.

That's one reason why I have suggested the Nova fins as a good choice. Despite its odd look, it is really just a normal single blade fin. It's actually a lot more like the Jet Fins than you realize until you see them side by side. I use the Flutter kick almost exclusively because I'm old and I have a slight impairment in one leg but I have used the Frog kick and others as well. There's no reason why the Nova wouldn't work perfectly for them too. Maybe someone can comment on that. Thanks for watching. Alec

The Nova Wing fin is great for every fin kick. Although light, it is remarkably stiff and will hold it's shape regardless of the direction of the kick. It's hard to describe and harder to impress upon you how it feels. You really need to try it. Go to your local Scubapro dealer and ask to try one. I gotta' believe he'll have one from rental or from a staff member that you can use. If not let me know and I'll call him!! I think you'll be pretty pleased. Alec

Dear Alec, concerning the holes, that are very close to your foot: Don´t they prevent from negative resistance as your foot is more looking upside down compaired to the blade itself? So, better to let the water run through as to build up unnecessary negative resistance with your foot? Would love to hear your opinion :-)

I have watched numerous videos demonstrating fin performance. While your point is good, the thought of eliminating any negative resistance is seldom addressed. Divers generally feel that they get propulsion on both the upward and downward stroke. The downward stroke or power stroke is by far the greatest source of power. The upward stroke or recovery stroke is much weaker and is really a relaxing stroke to get the leg and fin ready for the next power stroke. It could be compared to the exhaust stroke of a 4 cycle gas engine - no power goes to the crankshaft but just wait a second. Power is coming! Negative resistance occurs on both strokes and tries to slow the fin down. It actually takes energy to overcome. Negative resistance is greater on the power stroke because of the velocity but if measured accurately, balances out on the 2 strokes because the same distance is covered on each. Over the years there have been attempts to negate negative resistance. Healthways had fins in the 60's that featured a flap over a large hole. The flap closed and provided a full blade to the water on the power stroke but then opened so the blade area was reduced on the recovery stroke. Neat idea but the benefit was minimal. Certainly when compared to the cost and complexity of the fin. An open hole would benefit (or not) both strokes equally. I know that both Aqua-lung and Scubapro spent a lot of money "proving" that their vented fins were better. I'm not so sure they succeeded. Fish don't have split fins ..... Anyway I've used Mares fins for over 30 years and perhaps four or five years ago I switched to Hollis F2s for more of a travel fin as it's shorter and lighter (fits in my suitcase). That said I use my Mares fins if I know I'll be diving in strong current (Hollis F1s are too heavy for me and the F2s don't quite provide the power). Quite a few people I know are using the SP Novas and I might just ask to borrow a pair to find out if they really do make any difference.

Alec I've been looking at getting a set of scuba pro novas and I saw that they now have a nova gorillas which are described as stiffer. I was wondering what your opinion on stiff vs less stiff fins were?

I'm a runner, and I have both the Novas and gorillas, to me they almost feel the same but the 3 other people that have tried both can really feel a difference. One person got a cramp the gorillas after only 10 mins of finning around a pool. If you have strong legs or are a large person then maybe consider the gorillas

Healthways had a pair of fins in the 60's that had holes just like the Jets or Rockets but, there was a flap over the holes so they only opened on recovery. During the thrust kick you got full surface. Re the holes, I was just never convinced that the holes in the center of the blade actually helped. The small hole at the tip of the Nova was put there as a result of research and testing. Apparently it help efficiency although I'm sure the benefit is so small as to be unnoticeable by any diver. I'm looking into getting certified very soon and buying all the personal gear and I was hoping this video would provide a little more clarity about split fins instead of spending half the video talking about those scuba-pro nova fins again. From what i've read, people who use split fins tend to love them, people who mainly use paddle fins tend to disregard split fins as terrible in currents, cant go backwards, cant frog kick. I've read that splits can be decent at frog kick but aren't as good at going backwards. And if you are diving in strong currents you need powerful fins to fight against you are burning through your air at a rapid pace. I don't know if split fins are the best for me right now but I also did read they are better if you have knee issues. I was hoping for a little more "from the horses mouth" advice on this one though.

I dont like split fins personally, I think they are very over rated but as you say some people seem to love them. The best thing to do as a new diver is try all kinds of equipment and see what works best for you. I prefer lighter and efficient fins that are easier to travel with as Alec mentions about the ones he uses. It helps a great deal when traveling abroad and reduces leg strain underwater. I'm 70 and have a problem with 1 leg. I need the most efficient fin possible - light but strong and no wasted effort. I've tried them all - solids, long, short, several different splits and most recently the Nova. The reason I spent a longer time on the Nova is simple - it's by far the best fin I've ever used. Any stroke, any time, easy to pack and to use, comfortable and so easy on my old legs yet i can keep up with the best of them without a strain. I can't help but suggest you try them. I believe you'll find them excellent. Alec

Split fins are great for straight ahead in horizontal position propulsion, and are completely inappropriate for anything else , ie maintaining any type of stationary position mid water. Useless in caves, wrecks. Wish there was a way to switch gears so to speak , a split for transition from shore to dive site and back, and a straight blade once UW

There has been so much innovation in scuba gear since I started in 1958. In a few years there may be a lever on fins for Power or Normal use that changes the fin flex strength. My current pair of fins are the Nova's just like you were showing in your video. I find them very powerful for the amount of effort you put in. However, I've recently tried doing the frog kick with these fins and find it a little bit difficult because of their length or maybe also because of their design? I picked up a pair of the old tried and true Jet fins and I'm going to try them out on my next dive. Curious as to what type of kick you are using when you are using your Nova's. Not sure if you've heard of innerspace explorers, a technical diving training foundation. They are hardcore DIR style divers, and this is one of their top instructors reviewing the Seawing Nova. He doesnt care about brands and new innovations. Thanks for the link to their video. I did watch it and he does make a point. A skilled diver would most likely be able to do any of those kicks with any fin on the market. However, I'm hoping to find out between the 2 sets of fins I now own, which one is the better tool to do the frog kick (assuming I got the technique down pat). I guess I will find out soon enough if it is easier for me to do the frog kick with the Scubapro Nova's vs the Scubapro Jet Fin.

@@rob_9876 You'll definitely like the Nova's for their weight savings but they take up more space than the Jets. For travelling via air where weight limits are a concern I will pick my Nova's every time. You can also consider just using house fins, but that is always a toss up. Good luck!

The NOVA fins are not like most so some generalizations don't apply. They actually do have a small bend but since they are designed to provide power on both strokes, the bend is minor and not always noticeable. You can see it when they are on your foot. The reason for the "must have" bend is simply that the fins should point straight back while finning. That is, assuming your are swimming horizontally and parallel to the bottom, the fins should also be horizontal and parallel to the bottom. But because of the angle of the ankle, the fin must be bent a bit to accomplish this. You cannot point your fins straight back without breaking your ankle! In the end, flat or bent, it's the comfort and the efficiency of the fin that matters and that may be different for different divers. Some divers like a stiff, straight fin. Others a bent or curved fin. I suggest you try lots of fins if possible until you find the one that gives you comfort and efficiency. Thanks for watching. Alec

According to ScubaPro, the Seawing Nova's pivot results in the fin bending as soon as you start kicking. They also claim the angle of the blade stays about the same regardless of how hard you kick. So...the Nova's don't act like a straight fin in the water.

I've seen fins get so tightly stuck on a diver's foot that it needed 2 other divers to help ull them off. But I think just a couple of small holes in the toe of the foot pocket would solve that. Alec

Split fins generally aren't good for current diving, they are less efficient than blade fins. However you need to take into account your own physical abilities. If you have a large stiff blade and youre trying to power through a current for good amount of time, your calves, legs, ankles, may start hurting or even worse cramping. If you manage to pull through without ant cramps you'll be tired and youll probably be burning through your air. Try a bunch of fin types and stiffnesses to see what suits you best in the type of conditions youll be diving the most.

Yep! There's a current fad among Tech types who swear by the big, old rubber Rocket fin. The Nova is very similar but with a much more sophisticated design - more efficient in every fin stroke. Any diver who tries falls in love. Good luck. Alec

I disagree. Sure you can frog with anything - but tech requirements are usually different from just regular diving. A lot of gear is hauled and the balance is different so a soft fin that allows you to change the position of your legs in the water withour using techniques that may be a little more difficult to pull off when you are loaded. But there is no real power in splits when frogging, they're just easy on the joints and muscles if you are not a strong swimmer and they allow you to move your foot about more freely in the water column if you don't have the technique to manoeuvre to any position with a stiff finn. But it comes at the cost of precision finning because they don't "stick" in the water column and give you a pivot point like a stronger fin would. Which is also why they accellerate poorly on a single fin stroke. The trouble with these in current or strong surf is that you have to BUILD power or speed gradually. You can't muscle through and get an immediate effect. There is not enough power in a single fin stroke as it would be with say a classic mares fin. If you push harder than the fin is able to transfer it just bends and wobbles and the effort is wasted. That means you have to work continuously with softer and smaller movements but much faster as opposed to a stroke-rest rythm and your working pulse and air consumption will increase. If you are a guide or instructor it also means you can't do a single fast and strong kick to accellerate fast over a short distance to catch some student or new diver on a runaway ascent. Anyway - split fins are fine for covering a lot of ground, especially surface transport with a minimum of muscle effort or hauling a load - but that's not what most people do or aim for when diving. Sure splits may take off some the strain on your joints and muscles or save the odd cramp if you're out of shape. But in current or strong surf - you'll have to work either way, and split fins will be weak sauce for many core manoeuvres and just generally less flexible in terms of technique. In caves or wrecks.they offer less precision as well. How many people have I seen floundering, heart pounding, breathing heavily, sweating in their mask and hogging air trying to build and maintain a steady pace once the current picked up ... the answer is - I see that every time the going gets tough. I'd say I've done about a hundred dives with split fins and I have just long left them behind. When would I choose splits? If I had to do a long laborous surface swim at a fair consistent speed - their forte is when you gradually build that and maintain it. But there is an upper limit to what they allow you to work against that way. I might also choose to us them if I had to carry a lot of tanks for a deep dive and had restricted upper body flexibility. Could be they also offer some steadiness when filming, due to the soft attack, at least in calm water. In cold water coastal scenarios they allow you to walk about on the sand with fins on in the shallows more freely, which can be a teaching advantage if you are helping student divers on O.W 1 But frankly, other than these specialised situations, or the calm pool-like scenario - I think they are too unreliable in the grand scheme of things.

Alec, I have a pair of Scubapro Twin Jet fins, I just got a set of spare straps,just in case,those straps came with buckles that attach to the fin with a stainless pin, how do I take the old one off and install the new one? I can’t find any info on this anywhere thanks!

First, let me revert to the vernacular - it's a bitch!! The old pins are riveted in place. You literally have to grind or punch out the pin. Invariably that destroys the old clip (the U-Shaped part). Your dealer ought to have got you a new set which can be changed over. Some use a long bolt and locknut. Others re-rivet together. Go here online.fliphtml5.com/tzzi/splr/?1519576582796#p=335 or find a Scubapro Dealer and ask him to get you a clip set for old Scubapro Jet Fins. They are the same and will work. Either way it's a pain in the butt. That old fin is still around which I find hard to believe but lots of divers like them. Maybe I'll do a video on changing the straps and clips. I am an old man.... ORCA fins which look like Duck Feet. Now using Cressi long fins. I think some of the modern fins have a "low IQ". Get in shape, swim laps, and dive with a decent fin.

There are compromises that must be made with anything, and you just have to look for what gives you the most of what you want and the least sacrifices.
