Sports are not haram. I believe with the exception of Boxing (which is a violent sport), I consider all sports halal. The actual sport like Cricket is not haram! But if you are now intentionally hurting a player by hitting him with the cricket ball or with the cricket bat, yes that may be viewed as haram. Same with football, it is not haram. But blasting someone with the ball is. Hence why yellow and red cards are issued in Football. But the actual games are not haram in any way shape or form!
