I'm a big fan of terminal file managers and I think you should at least give them a try but are they really worth the effort.

On a related note, I use a Lisp dialect called fennel to configure the xplr file manager, the xplr file manager is usually configured in lua (I do the same thing for all of my lua-configured-programms (tym and wezterm for terminals, awesome wm,hilbiSH shell and luakit Web-browser to name a few) as fennel is "transpiled" to lua and therefore mostly compatible with it) Edit: feel free to use any part of this comment for a video idea,

I love the Norton Commander since my 80286 and so glad that there is a free software clone which even is capable of moving files to remote locations. It just works on every machine and I don't want to learn a new file manager every time I switch to a new desktop environment. It feels so good using the old cherry keyboard with MX blue switches from my 90's DOS PC and the Midnight Commander.

Just quickly navigating between directories, without always refreshing the view with ls, inside miller columns makes installing and sometimes using a file manager worth it to me. And of course ranger does so much stuff besides that it's really useful.

Had you made this video earlier this year, I would be here ranting against tui file managers. I had previously used ranger but could never manage to use it as efficiently as a gui fm. However, a couple of months ago I forced myself to learn more about ranger, and even changed Nemo's keyboard shortcut to open ranger instead, just to force myself out of the habit of constantly opening Nemo. Little by little I started to get the hang of it. Now I love it! I guess I just needed to force myself to transition. I'm now using only the cli and tui for file managing.

I was genuinely interested in terminal file managers, but for my use case it often ended up feeling unnecessary. For quick navigation I setup a few variables used in combination with zsh's autocd. To name a couple of examples $CFG takes me to config, $DW takes me to downloads. I know it's a weird solution but it works for me. I know that it's possible to get media previews in a terminal, but the GUI ones just do it by default and usually require no extra steps.

Bash has autocd too. I don't use zsh because (Gentoo) Linux is my main OS at home and I work on Red Hat servers at work, often on customer sites. I see no point to learning two types of shell because I can't install zsh on a customer server just because I would happen to use it at home - bash is on every single server. As someone who has been using Linux since 1996 (UNIX for a bit longer) and worked with it for about 20 years, if you want to forge a career in Linux then learn the "lowest common denominator" tools that you know will be on every machine you work on - vim, sed, awk, bash, etc. "Learn once, use everywhere."

I've used terminal file managers a lot when I was new to Linux (maybe like 2-3 years into it) just because I thought it was cool and rather efficient. Some of them were also great when you're setting up an Arch Install and you don't have a WM/DE or even X installed yet 😂 right now though, 11 years into using Linux full-time… I just take what's easy 😅 I use the archinstall script when I can and I use Xfce's Thunar File Manager under awesomewm. I think it's the best since it can still be used almost fully keyboard-driven while not having to deal with small quirks of a terminal File Manager ++ adding keybinds and new functions to Thunar are really easy and can be done in the GUI. I would love to go back to different set-ups when it comes to TUI File Managers, Window Managers, terminal emulators, and the like… but awesome-wm, thunar, and my current software stack is just waaaay too comfy now 😂 + I've been using this set-up for almost 5 years and I've never been more productive 😅. It's really a "to each their own" type of ordeal.

I didn't knew CLI file managers exited so I've created a bunch of aliases that basically make the terminal acts like a file manager. Now using my aliases is far more efficient than a CLI file manager. E.g. The command 'd /Folder_of_choice': It clears the terminal Enters the Folder_of_choice Display files ranked by size And show the total size of all files in the folder If you creative with your aliases, the terminal can become the best file manager.

I'm pretty happy with Nautilus as my default file explorer (I know there's probably better ones, but over the years I've customized it so much to my liking that I keep coming back for one small feature or another), but I've recently explored TUI file explorers and it fits the niche of "it's too much hassle doing this with cp and mv, but I don't need the thumbnails and caching of a full-fat GUI program" (for example, as an illustrator I kinda need thumbnails in my day-to-day, but with folders full of images it can take a good second or two for Nautilus to process the contents of one; if I just need to go off the file names, e.g. to clean up backup versions, lf is much more responsive), and given that they're, like, minuscule in size compared to other applications I don't feel bad about having one installed for the once or twice a week that I use it.

I would say the reason to use a terminal file manager is because you can do everything that a GUI file manager can do, but you can use more keyboard shortcuts which is something a terminal user tends to like to do more. Along with the fact that you don't need to type a full file name out so you can very accurately select and delete/rename/move a file whereas from the terminal proper you'd have to either type it out fully or tab complete through potentially dozens of similarly named files. Now, from my shell I've got readline setup so I can hit tab, complete to the first match, then shift+tab to go back to the common root, type a few more characters then tab for more, wash, rinse, repeat as needed, but in some directories, usually things downloaded from others, it can be annoying. Especially if we're dealing with varying cases of file names.

First thing I grab when I do a fresh install is spacefm. it supports tabs and four panels and the background turns red when you're in root so you dont do anything stupid. Changing permissions is easy so you don't have to fiddle with chown and chmod commands. Unfortunately its not in arch official so you'll have to build it from AUR. Or grab pcmanfm while you install which is almost as good. That and terminator are my must-haves with any build.

i love my 2 pane file managers and midnight commander is one of my favorites, since i can use it on windows and linux. sure it's dated and if i were writing one, i would do things a bit differently, but it's better than good for what i need. recently i've been thinking about doing a tty only setup, maybe using tmux as a stand-in TWM. and launching gui applications without a DE, using just xorg when needed (mostly for web browsing). not sure how well this will work in the setup i have in mind. i'm wondering. i've never used tmux. would exporting environment varialbes in one panes be recognized globally in all the panes? i want to create a bookmark script that exports the PWD as an environment variable that i can use in all the panes (i think with this, i can use 2 panes in tmux as a defacto dual pane file manager). i'm also now wondering how well fish shell would perform in this setup. i think for this, i will be using debian server with minimum install and build the apps i need from source.

Absolutely use the software that works for you and don't let "software fashionistas" tell you that any piece of software is "old fashioned". One of the best file managers that I have ever used was Directory Opus on the Commodore Amiga - if you've never seen it, it was dual pane (like mc) but had a good number of configurable buttons across the bottom that mean, for example, you could select a number of files in one pane, click a button and then would be zipped up into an archive in the other window. I don't use just mc, but I do use it with ranger - ultimately, they are both small applications and I can just use the one that works for me at the time I need to use it.

I usually just use Dolphin (imo the most fully featured file manager with a lot of nice addons like hash sums, quick glanze at format dependant file info in the preview, ...). More often I simply use terminal commands (cd, mv, cp, ...) though. You can select multiple sources for all like in ranger (cp FileA FileB FileC dest/). I understand you if the usecase would be on bash. Using zsh with navigatable autocomplete is the game changer for me in the terminal. When you're in a directory, selecting multiple files with tab and arrows is just super fast.

I have been using vifm for over a year at this point and I would personally say the point of a terminal file manager is speed. If you are using a GUI file manager its slow and you need to click on icons to go in and out of directories. If you are using cd you have to both remember where your files are and type them out. Tab completion helps a lot but nothing is speedier than using your arrow keys or vim keys to zip in and out of directories or being able to visual select multiple files and cw to open up vim and edit all the selected file names at once using the full power of vim to essentially automate the process.

I like Ranger for being already pretty feature rich and out-of-the-box most of the time. It already have a preview script, good defaults and it's easier to configure, but compared to lf it's way too sluggish to my taste, at least on my old machine. I'm using lf now but it took me a good amount of time to customized it to a usable state, but after the more laborious part lf turns out to be really good and lightning fast compared to Ranger.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 column view isn't an aesthetic preference, it is an efficiency preference, as music producer and artist, I manage a LOT of files and there's not always a sensible way of organizing them, remembering individual names of samples or the path to certain files isn't always an option, being able to quickly brush though folders and see the contents of each without having to traverse into each folder or open and close accordions is often a necessity.

Even though my setup is literally just me SSHing into a raspberry pi on my desk to use as a media server and FTP client for file transfer between tablet and everything else? I find CLI file manager tools to be pretty useful. Imagine how handy people who SSH into actual work machines across the country feel. Edit: Also I came up from late DOS/early Windows 3.11. So there is something... Homey about the process.

I'm not going to open a terminal window just to cd into a movies folder. That would be too sweaty, specially on a tilling window manager where I would have to dedicate half my screen just to access an anime folder. About GUI file managers like Nautilus and Thunar, I think they are garbage and should die in a fire together with most gtk apps, and unless I want to install the whole KDE Plasma DE as a dependency to have Dolphin there is only Ranger left, which I can put on a scratchpad and live a simple life.
