Thanks Guys. It's good to see that Fair Isle is looming reasonably shipshape, at least below the waterline. I'm just back from two weeks in northern Sardinia and southern Corsica, and the weather was amazing, as were some of the anchoring antics we witnessed...good Lord, it's scary out there sometimes... One hack we used when taking the dinghy in was to secrete an Apple AirTag abroad; this gave us more confidence about leaving it unattended (we forgot to bring along our usual lockable wire). It is interesting that Portugal has waived the Schengen rules (at least for a while)...perhaps as an incentive for visiting boaties..?

As always a good vlog, I learn so much from you both enjoy. From an ex Advanced SI kayaking two basic tips that may help : 1 why turning lower your arms and push your turning blade as far out as you can. The rear person has a better chance of steering the canoe; when paddling in a straight line try not to pull the blade past your hip. Doing this will stop pushing the boat forward and to to turn it. Enjoy

I had my blue hulled Nimbus wrapped by Yacht Wraps UK three years ago and it still looks fantastic. No polishing required just a wash with car shampoo or equivalent. Much better than continually cutting and polishing. One of the best improvements I have made but if you do take this route make sure only the very best marine grade vinyls are used.

It's not going to work for us as we have little groves in the gel coat. Your right about looking into quality though. There is a problem with them breaking down then adding millions of bits of plastic to the ocean. It's something manufactures are going to have to monitor going forward to make sure the quality is there.

The revelation that Schengen doesn't apply in Portugal is an eye opener. I was talking to someone about their travels in the Med. They said that some countries are not stamping passports on exit, thus, apparently extending the 90 day rule. I was a little sceptical about this but he was adamant about it and had, he said, spent several months in the Schengen area. He said that many countries are allowing British registered boats to do this because of the financial benefit to the ports and marinas they use. Do you have a perspective on this? Bill
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Yes we've talked about it a lot in past episodes. Malta is very well known for not applying Schengen to sailors, they stamp your crew list not your passport. We found other countries that seem to do that too, but this maybe more pot luck with which official you happen to get. We've been in Schengen since leaving Montenegro in April but have virtually no days logged

Hi Again, thanks for the informative videos. I've exchanged messages on Schengen with you via Patreon before but it seems things are evolving. On your last facebook post on the topic you were checked out of Schengen in Gibraltar. Did Portugal not check you back in?
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Yes. Sorry if it wasn't clear. They did check us in here at the marina the shot of the official at the desk was him checking us in, but he explained that there was 'new legislation' in Portugal which means they are not counting days here for the rest of this year. From the responses we've had putting this out it seems that Portugal have got behind with processing people who have applied for residency and visa so they have just scraped the schengen 90 days this year while they catch up! Now this might mean when we get to the Canaries (Spanish Islands ) that they do count the days here!? it's not their rule after all and a Portuguese stamp probably means Schengen to them? However from what we here the Canaries really don't worry too much about counting Schengen days either. Clear as mud!
@macsinvan Жыл бұрын
@@svfairisle Thanks for the clarification. You also answered my next question was, what happens when you get to Canaries if you have an extended stay in Portugal. Glad you are helping us all with this mess. We will be in your position one year later. - Andrew

As I mentioned earlier, I love the way your boat is setup. I’ve wondered, does the canoe stern help in heavy following seas?
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
Yes a canoe stern certainly helps in following seas, but that not to say that you cant have an excellent handling boat without a canoe stern. Whats really important is good shape below the waterline, so if you have a boat that tapers around and still has a transom but the lower sections chamfer off quickly then it will still be great in a following sea. What you REALLY don't want is the modern trend which is designed purley for space to the absolute detriment of sailing is what I call a 'fat arsed boat!' A beam that comes all the way to the stern. These boats are just marina queens in my opinion and should never go offshore!
@rexvarr4574 Жыл бұрын
@@svfairisle one thing that I want (with my still learning knowledge) is a full keel. As you mentioned coming out of the Gibraltar straight, the rudder is better protected. As is the prop. If I were to hit a floating object or run aground, there is a higher chance there won’t be a hull breach by bending the prop shaft and loosing the rudder.
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
@@rexvarr4574 Yes I agree, but if you are boat shopping I would not discount boats with a long keel and a full skeg. Be a bit careful if you're getting an old boat as when boat first changed over from full keels to long keels some of the engineering for the skeg was a bit suspect. A skeg has to be strong. What's more important for me is an encapsulated keel. It's very nice to be free of the worry of keel bolts!

With regards to the Schengen in Portugal, I’m assuming you would need to check out of Spain to go to Gibraltar then go straight to Portugal so you are checked out of the Schengen. then do Portugal not stamp your passport so you are not checked in. This is why you can stay as long as you want until you check into the canaries. Sorry just trying to work it out because if you hadn’t checked out of Spain you’d still be on the clock? Wouldn’t Portugal get into trouble doing that? If they can do it why can’t Spain? Spain have applied to the EU but have not had it cleared, or so they say. It’s all a bit confusing, just wondered if you knew why😅
@judyaslett6209 Жыл бұрын
Yes we did check out of Spain and in to Gibraltar. Customs in Portugal said it was a bilateral between U.K. and Portugal that we could stay until the end of 2023. Not sure if that’s to continue…

So by not stamping your passport, where do officials enforcing Schengen assume you’ve been? My wife and I (from US) will be purchasing a boat in Sweden and should be in Med in July & August.
@svfairisle Жыл бұрын
In our experience they dont care! We arrived in the anchorage in Gibraltar (which is in Spanish waters) went ashore, walked into Gib and got stamped out of Spain even though we wern't stamped into Spain or any other Schengen country. We also a couple of years ago checked our of Greece to go to Turkey but got stuck for 2 weeks with the Meltemi blowing, the Turks didn't ask where we had been in the meantime, they just stamped us in.

@@svfairisle It will be interesting next year when they bring in the Electronic visa system - I was cruising in Brittany this year and found it almost impossible to get my derogation forms stamped - in the end I was "stamped in", but never "stamped out". However, when I travelled via the Chunnel later on, they didn't care that I had technically overrun the 90 days.
