I disagree. Nearly all of these shooters fully intend to die in a blaze of glory. It is a way to commit suicide in a way that makes them feel powerful - like they are doing something about the turmoil they are experiencing. Nihilism, hatred of life, being unable to find meaning anymore, wanting to end your life, wanting to end life itself, and wanting to end suffering through obliteration - these are the enemies we need to address with these shooters. We can actually put the competitive nature of media to positive effect. It is not uncommon for CNN to point out Fox's failings and vice-versa. If one of the major networks started publicly shaming the others for "supporting" mass shooters by showing their faces, names, and generally giving them the fame they crave, while at the same time focusing on victims and abstaining from divulging the perpetrators' faces, names, etc., and explained why sharing that info is destructive (perhaps interviewing Lankford and like-minded researchers at the same time), perhaps the other producers would take note and change their behavior. Texas shooting: they said that he purchased the guns online, but with the reporting, they implied that it could be shipped to your home directly when in fact he purchased it and sent it to an FFL and made the purchased legally. Something similar happened where a famous person on an island committed suicide and tons of suicides followed because he put the idea of committing suicide in the forefront of many peoples’ minds. They should at least show the victims’ faces more than the shooter’s. Make them famous, not the perpetrators.

Truthfully, I feel the only way to counter act this growing problem isn't to silence the news, but rather flip the narrative, focus on the victems and openly mock the people who commit these crimes, let them see society will notice them, and mock them for being so self centered that they'd kill others than help them selves. I know this may seem extreme, and frankly I couldn't imagine it working either. But it's sort of the only solution I see at this point.

I really felt that the worst case of this was the Virginia Tech shooting. The murderer made a video of himself, made multiple copies, and put them in Federal Express packaging, sending him out the night before to all these media outlets. The very next day, when he committed the murders, his picture was on the cover of newspapers and magazines across the country. An image he chose to represent himself with pistols in hand pointed at the camera. Now imagine you are the mother of a student who is murdered by this freak, and you step out the door only to find a newspaper looking up at you but the same image that your daughter had just before she died at the hands of this freak. Those parents missed a wonderful chance to sue all of these media outlets for the trauma that I am sure they felt. The only way that a media Outlet is going to respect citizens as if they lose money as a result of their disrespect. I also have long felt that the FBI should have focused on these cases by seizing every single last personal effect owned by the shooter in any murder like this, and to seize the body and not release it to family members and keep it for forensic study until it's been absolutely totally parceled out to Laboratories wherever they would keep those bits and pieces. No need for a grave to celebrate some freak. Further, I had always felt that the Press, which is perfectly willing to keep certain people's names out of the press, ought to always be required to keep the names of these people concealed forever. We should never know names like Carl panzram or Charles Manson or Ted bundy.

The major obstacle to effectively preventing these mass shootings is that the media and political figures accept the ostensible motive these shooters give, especially if it's racial, and the only if the shooters is white. All of these shooters suffer from the same mental illness, but their target depends on the particular rhetoric that directs their fear and/or anger. I have seen some commentators come tantalizing close to this conclusion, but no one in power seems to have made it. Until they do, the failures you have cited will continue.

Give the public time to process emotionally what happen before informing them of the details so that we could get closer to a honest discussion on what happened and what we could do to mitigate the frequency or/and severity of these events. One way or another the info will get out but a less emotionally traumatizing approach to coverage would be key to having a more informed perspective to what happened and how to prevent or minimize such atrocities.

The 'problem' is that the news apparatus has become an infotainment system; and sensational events are 'more' entertaining. Thus, they RACE to do absolutely everything that should not be done, if the goal is to reduce the attention perpetrators get. The thiing is changing the approach to distributing information about such an event wouldn't have to make that big a dent in the distribution of the news, it would just shift where the emphasis was; because it is the emphasis on showcasing the perpetrators that is apparently very influential.

The media ignores the mental health aspect of the perpetrator. We have a strange bias in society where we aren't allowed to talk about the reasons somebody does something because some people interoperate it as a "defense" of the perpetrator rather than preventative research. Young men are more mentally ill than ever, they feel alone and isolated. The only ways young men are able to date and meet people is via tinder, simply asking people in school/work isn't a thing anymore and gets you ousted as a creep. These young boys get home after school feeling alone and dejected and log onto tinder to see 0 matches day in and day out because they're not 6 foot tall or not naturally muscular or sporty. 80% of young men don't meet the standards of companionship. and they feel like a failure and get resentful so they give up and lock themselves away to video games. Worse, they join extremist women hating groups and blame everything on women. The mentality/perspective of a school shooter is one of a martyr, one that's fighting back against all the bullies and "sticking up for the little guy" (themself). It's a twisted victim's mentality that is born out of the sorry state of communication in our society right now, where you're not even allowed to speak to people unless they swipe yes on an app. Imagine being a teen again and going to school, talking to *literally* nobody, getting home, and being able to talk to *literally* nobody. Who are you going to talk to? You're going to go to fringe angry forums full of people like this who are cursing a legitimately unfair society Whenever classmate retrospectives are put out about these kids the classmates always say something like "He was just weird and always sat in the back, nobody ever talked to him blah blah" Give people a chance, for goodness sake. Just say 'Good morning x!' Chances are it's the only time that type gets interaction.

That could make things worse by making them more relatable, look at the amount of people in Japan who sympathize with Shinzo Abe's killer because the media heavily reported his "embarrassing" backstory to the public (he was thrown out of the Navy due to mental problems, and his mother was a religious fanatic who threw away all her money to a church), you'd think this would make him seem pathetic but a lot of people related to him and made him a millionaire through donations despite being incarcerated. I wouldn't be surprise if similar attack happens in the future now.

@@johnnyjohn-johnson7738 you revealed the weakness of your own argument by putting "embarrassed" in quotes. Those aren't embarrassing details of his life. They are sympathetic.

@@mcalsip It's not a weakness, that was actually my point, the details that should in theory be embarrassing on account of making the individual fit the "loser" archetype could alternatively be interpreted in a way that views the subject as a relatable underdog type person who faced trials and hardships.

I've said this before we shouldn't go after the branch we should go for the roots. In my opinion the root of the problem is media and the mental health crisis.

I've been saying this for a long time now. What makes these mass shootings so much more common than they used to be, isn't an increase in availability to guns, or increase in firearms technology. Yes, better firearms technology has made it possible, but it's not the root cause. We've had semi automatic detachable magazine fed, high capacity magazine guns, since the early 1900, and not nearly the number of mass shootings there are now. And there's always been people evil enough to do mass shootings as well. I think the difference is, the Columbine shooters gave people the idea to do it, where as before, not too many people had thought of it. I knew a person who was expelled from my high school for threatening to shoot it up, and he said that the Columbine shooters were his heroes, because they were the first to do it. I think that says a lot, what these people are looking for, is to get their names out there. The media attention they're given is what causes them to do this, and that also explains why after one happens, there's always a few more that happen within a close proximity to it.

@Dub Jubs Oh, I absolutely think you're right. Serial killers used to be all the rage, but now it's one and done mass killers. These guys are the biggest jackasses on the planet, and we need to stop giving them attention. I remember they made the Boston Marathon bomber look like a movie star or some shit.

If advertising didn’t work, companies wouldn’t spend millions of dollars on it. What the media does by talking about every aspect of the people who do this is nothing short of advertising.

Yes, they absolutely are. Because with every sensationalized tragedy some other lunatic sees how much attention the shooter is getting and decide they want their name to be remembered too. America definitely has a problem with gun violence, but the solution is not to disarm gun owners who have followed the law and did nothing wrong. All that does is create more defenseless victims.
